St. Germain Bo-Boen Newsletter 40th Anniversary 1969-2009 Volume 2009-10 Number 6 President s Message Tom Christensen Hello everyone and welcome to the February 2010 newsletter. First off, I would like to remind everyone that the Vogel Groomer Show is coming up February 3rd and 4th. It is a great time to talk snowmobiling with other snowmobilers and see the equipment that keeps our trails in good shape. If you are in town, stop by and help support our club as we are doing the food service once again this year. Then at the end of the month is our Vintage Snowmobile Race, February 27th. We are hosting the event for the Northern Vintage Snowmobile Race Series as we have done in the past. This group is made up of vintage snowmobile enthusiasts that promote fundraising through racing for other organizations. The race is free for all spectators and the club is doing the food service. Stop in and enjoy some of the race and help support your club. At this time of the season, we should all be riding beautiful groomed trails throughout the Northwoods. However with our warm up of last weekend, the trails are not in the best condition. Hopefully by the time everyone reads this newsletter, the snow will have come back and we all will be enjoying our favorite sport. If you are on Facebook, the Bo-Boens now have a page. Be sure that you become a fan so that you will have the latest Bo-Boen news and trail reports. Thank you for your support February 2010 February Membership Meeting Tuesday, February 9th Spang s Italian Restaurant Cocktails 6:00 pm Dinner 7:00 pm Menu Selection: Osso Bucco served with baked potato, vegetable and home-made bread Chicken Kiev served on Wild Rice topped with hollandaise sauce and vegetable All dinners served with coffee and dessert. RSVP by Friday, February 5th to: Renee Verfuerth (715) 479-1156 Take a friend snowmobiling this winter! Tom

THANK YOU! We would like to thank everyone that helped out this year with the Snowmobile Safety Class. We needed to have volunteers outside for the driving course, inside for instruction, in the kitchen for food service and members to bring in baked goods. We had all of these bases covered and this year was our largest class ever with 95 students. They came from all over Wisconsin and eight different states. Special thanks to Eliason Financial for copying the Snow Safety Book and the Primetimers for copying the Safety Test. Thanks again, Bev Dittmar & Ron Rhodes Participants in the December 2009 Snowmobile Safety class. The St. Germain Bo-Boen Snowmobile Club will be hosting a race for the Northern Vintage Snowmobile Race Series on Saturday, February 27, 2010. Racing starts at 10:00 a.m. and ends around 5:00 p.m. at the St. Germain Community Center and soccer fields. Admission is free, and you can come by car or by snowmobile. Refreshments and food are available all day. The Northern Vintage Snowmobile Race Series is made up of vintage snowmobile enthusiasts that promote fundraising through racing for other organizations. They have a six-race series that starts in January and ends in March. It makes an enjoyable outing for the whole family. For more information on the NVSRS circuit, see their web site at www.nvsrs.org. This is the fifth year we will be hosting this event. It is a great fundraiser for our club, and we need volunteers to help with the race and also for food service. If you can help out that day, please contact Tom Christensen at 715-479-4930 or stgsport@verizon.net.

Trail Boss Report Jim Wendt Our reasonable start to the riding season has once again dwindled to some rough sledding. After the 18" in mid December, we have hit that all to familiar January drought. As of this writing, we have mud on some of our trail system with the woods being the preferred place to ride. We are in dire need of more snow. I sure hope the weather pattern changes from that predominant southern flow back to the more normal northerly flow - after all, we ARE supposed to be the snow belt! We have had some minor equipment problems, but nothing that we could not handle. Our new drivers are progressing nicely and doing a good job of learning the new equipment and the art of trail grooming. As I always do, I ask that you please extend a "thank you" to your drivers for the time and dedication toward making our trail system the best in the North. Your driver staff for this season is: Eagle River run - Crew chief Mike Zainer, Troy Schalinske, and Andy Skarbeck; Sayner run - Crew chief Tom Marks, Adam Ruenger, and Jim Safford; Town run - Crew chief Al Clemmensen, Ty Trapp, and Mike McCormick; Buffalo Lake run - Crew chief John Vojta, Steve Hausner, and Frank Lawrence; Dam Lake - Crew chief Jim Wendt, Gary Jacobi, and Todd Wiese. Our alternate drivers this season are Matt Verseman and Tim Gebhardt. My personal thanks and appreciation to these men for devoting their time and energy toward the necessary work on our trail system during all hours of the night for the benefit of the club and the many businesses who so desperately depend on the winter tourism dollars for their survival. I also want to thank the families of these men who so graciously adjust their lives for this short season. Your support and love are greatly appreciated. I hope your riding has been great so far this season. Let's pray for more snow so February and March can be banner months for our favorite sport. Ride safe and take the kids snowmobiling. It is so great to see all the young ones all bundled up and riding with Dad and Mom with quarters in their pockets just ready for the next warm up stop! That is how we will keep our sport strong well into the future. Happy Trails Jim The groomers are out creating beautiful Bo-Boen trails Maintenance day Monday, Todd Weise checking the oil on the Tucker Snow Cat. Let it Snow, Let it Snow, Let it Snow!

Judy Pacanowski The WRJO Take Pride & Ride raffle tickets are available at the following businesses: Sportsmen s Chalet, St. Germain Sport Marine, Black Bear Lodge & Den, Pub & Prime, Angry Dave s DJ s Northwoods Family Café, St. Germain Citgo, Subway, Legend s of the North, Hearthside Inn, Thunderbird Bar & Grill, Rustic Manor Motor Lodge, HodgePodge Lodge, Sunrise Café and Fibber s Bar & Restaurant. Tickets are $2.00 each, and all proceeds go to the club to benefit snowmobile trails. The drawing February 20 th. Thanks to Valerie Rybarczyk for organizing this important fundraiser. It s election time again. There is information in this newsletter about the election which happens at the March Membership Meeting. If you cannot attend, you can vote by absentee ballot by requesting one in writing (regular mail or e-mail) from me (PO Box 192; St. Germain, WI 54558 or woserjudy@aol.com) before 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 2 nd. The Tellers Committee will be provided with a membership list, and members attending the meeting will be asked to register with them and receive a ballot upon arrival. Anyone wishing to vote by absentee ballot must request a ballot from the secretary, in writing (e-mail will do), up to 7 days prior to the election. Absentee ballots must be returned in the envelope provided, sealed and mailed. No requests for absentee ballots will be accepted after 4pm on March 2 nd. You may not request an absentee ballot and vote at the meeting in March. 8th ANNUAL RADAR RUN The St. Germain Radar Racers hosted their 8th Annual Radar Run on the Thunderbird Pass Shaved Ice Track on Saturday, January 23rd. The event was originally created as a winter attraction to help local businesses during the winter seasons. This year 137 racers competed on 1000' of shaved ice for prizes and the coveted traveling trophy for the top speed of the day. Jack Hendrichs took top honors of the day with 163.1 mph. The Sno King Traveling Trophy will stay on display at the International Hall of Fame. Angry Dave's hosted the 2nd Annual Bikini Run for Charity with 21 ladies plus "Bikini Joe". These ladies were sponsored by local businesses and gathered pledges for the bikini race. Top Pledge gatherer was Jessia Shull, event coorganizer, with $1,017.00. Top Speed winner was Joann Yakey at 94.1 mph in her bikini! The Bikini Race traveling trophy went to Joann Yakey and will be on display at Thunderbird Pass for the year for sponsoring the overall winner of combined speed and money raised. Honorable mention goes to Twilight Bar and Grill that raised $1,997.00 in bikini donations and Bikini Joe Minaudo who raised $715 and sped along the track in his bikini at just over 90 mph. In all, the bikini ladies raised $11,800 and half of the net proceeds will be donated to the Susan G Komen Cure for Breast Cancer. The remainder of the net proceeds will be divided between the St. Germain Fire Department and Plum Lake Ambulance. Other events of the day included the Camp s SuperValue grocery cart races, Fun Runs against the Gun on 660' of snow, music by Legend George, and the food court sponsored by the St. Germain ATV Club. Over 40 sponsors donated to cover the costs of holding this event. Several Civic groups were on hand donating time to the festival including the St. Germain Lions Club, Bo-Boen Snowmobile Club Trail Assistance, St. Germain Fire Department, Plum Lake Ambulance, and the St. Germain Chamber of Commerce. Proceeds from the gate are donated to the civic groups for helping out. Mark Hiller, race director for the event, thanks all 49 sponsors and the dozens of volunteers that came together to bring this event to St. Germain again. Go to www.radarracers.com and St. Germain Radar Racers Facebook to see all the photos and event highlights.

ATTENTION NON-RESIDENT SNOWMOBILERS Snowmobiles bearing Wisconsin registration are not required to have a non-resident trail pass, even if the owner is from out of state. A two year Wisconsin registration is $30.00, compared to two trail passes at $70.00 for two years. Almost two times the money is generated with a two year registration as is with two trail passes due to the formula used to transfer gas tax revenue to the state snowmobile fund; the state snowmobile fund is where the money comes from for grooming and trail maintenance. By having Wisconsin registration instead of a trail pass, you save $40.00 every two years and contribute more money to the state fund. It is perfectly legal to have Wisconsin registration on your snowmobile in addition to your home state's registration. You do not need a Wisconsin address; your home address can be used for a Wisconsin registration. Once you have a Wisconsin registration, it can be renewed online at the DNR website. Wisconsin registration applications can be obtained at any DNR office, at any dealer who sells snowmobiles in Wisconsin, and at many dealers out of state near the Wisconsin border. Did you know snowmobiling is healthy? Snowmobiling is a great form of exercise during the winter months! The average person burns 238 calories per hour while snowmobiling. This may seem shocking, but think about all the maneuvering and twisting a snowmobiler's body goes through while snowmobiling. It's just another reason to Take a Friend Snowmobiling! Winter s more fun in St. Germain on a snowmobile! Top reasons we love snowmobiling Universities questioned snowmobilers about why they enjoy snowmobiling as much as they do. The top reasons given for loving snowmobiling were: 1. We snowmobile to view the beautiful scenery. 2. We snowmobile to be with our friends and family. 3. We snowmobile to get away from usual demands of life. 4. We snowmobile to be close to nature and learn the land. 5. We snowmobile to reduce tensions. 6. We snowmobile to experience the solitude and go to places that only snowmobiles can take you to in the winter.
