IMPORTANT NOTICE RE: MAILBOX THEFT Thieves, usually operating with street gangs, engage in mailbox fishing, whereby a rope with glue, or with a glue pad, is lowered into a mailbox, and the mailbox contents are raised and removed. Checks which are found in mailboxes that are fished are often either washed meaning that the name of the check recipient/payee is removed, using household chemicals, and replaced with the name on the thief s bank account or the check is fraudulently endorsed by the thief, using the name of the payee on the check, and brought to a bank that will not take note and will cash it. Some Kehilla members have had mail, including checks and other important mail, stolen this way from local mailboxes. This mailbox fishing scheme has been noted in Washington Heights, Riverdale and the Upper West Side. Although regular mailboxes will eventually be replaced with high-security mailboxes, featuring a very narrow slot that should prevent mail theft, the 34 th Precinct advises, that in the interim: 1. If possible, send mail directly at post offices. 2. Otherwise, deposit mail in mailboxes as close as possible to pick-up time. 3. Consider using electronic payment methods for payment of bills, rather than mailing checks. The 34 th Precinct has this article posted on its wall: http://nypost.com/2017/06/13/cops-want-you-to-stop-mailing-checks-using-blue-postalboxes/ If members call the local post office about a specific mailbox, replacing such mailbox may become a priority and be replaced faster than if no one complains. The phone number of the 10040 post office is 212-942-5266 and 10033 post office is 212-543-2713.
