THE COMMUNITY CHURCH NEWS VOL. V I I I STOW, OHIO, F R I D A Y, J A N U A R Y 17, 1941 S H O U L D O N E BE A C H U R C H M E M B E R I F H E IS N O T A CHRISTIAN How m a n y t ' m e s I have heard t h a t question, and how often I have h e a r d it said that people have no right to join the Church until they a r e converted. Now, t h e Church is an assembly of people who are followers of Jesus Christ. They m a y differ in color, in education, in temperament, in environment, in interpretation, a n d in spiritual laws they m a y honestly differ. In the simple f u n d a m e n t a l s of t r u t h and right, such as repentance, faith, and service, which are the three g r e a t laws of Christianity, none need to be f a r a p a r t. So now w e have it before us. Should One Be a Church Member If He Is Not a Christian I a m persuaded t h a t no one w a n t s to belong to the Church unless he has a leaning t o w a r d Chrisit, but I a m told that trouble and mischief of t h e Churches arise f r o m unconverted folk who find their way into t h e Church. No doubt it would be b e t t e r if every Church m e m b e r h a d a wonderful experience, a thorough cleansing, a general cleaning up of bad habits, and in their stead was born a holy passion to live as Jesus did. However, m a n y t h e r e a r e in t h e Church wo never reach such heights and depths of experience in Christianity. The Church is not saved f r o m trouble by any process t h a t m a y be exacted of members. You m a y catechize them, baptize them, demand a pledge, a testimony, force them to come by the altar route, by probation or on No. 3 their honor. All these methods, a n d others, have been tried and with any, or all, n e a r l y the same results are in evidence. Jesus had J u d a s in the select company of twelve, a n d even to Peter, a f t e r t h r e e years of schooling, Jesus said, W h e n thou a r t converted strengthen t h e brethren. Thomas, a third m e m b e r of the apostolic group Was none too sure until he met Jesus a f t e r t h e resurrection. In t h e Gospel of Matthew, chapter 13 and verse 30 we read, let both grow together until t h e harvest, then unerring laws will separate the good f r o m t h e bad. Thus sin in a God m a d e world is likened unto a field of grain, be careful in rooting out the t a r e s lest the good grain be destroyed also. If a Church is not healthy enough spiritually to outgrow and discomfort the f e w who have no depth of soil, yea, if the Church be unable to treat, nourish and envigorate them, then the whole Church needs to rebuild her altars. Let us not, therefore, judge one another, but judge this r a t h e r t h a t no m a n put a stumbling-block or occasion to fall in his brother's way. Rom. 14:13. The weight of evidence throughout the Scriptures favors love, prayer, a n d common sense interest in a n y lagging soul. O, m y Church, w h a t an opportunity if within your company t h e r e be the unsaved, t h e unconverted. May it never b e charged at the b a r of E t e r n a l Justice t h a t they were dismissed, not wanted, abandoned. The light carried by I each and all m a y be none too ' bright, some perhaps very dim,

Golden Text Come; for all things are now ready. Luke 14:17. In this lesson we have the parable of the Great Supper. "But he said unto him, A certain man made a great supper; and he bade many: And he sent forth his servant at supper time to say to them that were bidden. Come; for all things are now ready. And they all with one consent began to make excuse." Such conduct was unexpected and unreasonable. If they had wished to decline the invitation they should have done so at the beginning and not waited until all was in readiness. Their excuses were most flimsy. The man who had bought a field must have seen it before he bought it; the man who had bought five yoke of oxen could have tried them out the next, day; the man Who had married a wife would have found his home" more pleasant for the fellowship of friends. every roanteb ROOSEVELT said "Every man owes part of his time to the profession to which he belongs." Our entire effort is to raise by our example the standards of our vocation. The McGowan Funeral Home

10 THE COMMUNITY CHURCH NEWS They simply did not want to come. But the poor and maimed and blind and lame came when bidden. The blind man could not go out and view his possessions, the lame could not follow the plow, the maimed had no wife. So "God chose the foolish things of the world that he might put to shame the things that are strong." There is no harm in the possession of property, in business or in marriage except when these things claim our entire devotion, blind us to the claims God has on our time and hinder us from accepting that great feast of eternal salvation which our Savior has made ready for us. Hazel Wheeler <s> CHOIR NOTES MINISTER PLEASE READ Last Thursday evening, January 8th, thirty-seven members of the choir were out to choir rehearsal and what's more thirty of these were present at 7:30 p. m. prompt which is the starting time for practice. This fact pleased our director so much that he thanked the choir three different times during the eyening, so come out all you members, young, old, middle aged and let's make that forty so we can get that chicken dinner Rev. Hulme promised us. Another thing the choir is planning some new activities soon, and, brand new music will be in use in a few days. We invite anyone interested to come out for rehearsals. We have grand times together! Ask anyone who has been to any of our parties! Violet Large, Publicity Director. KASTENS 116 East Graham STOW, OHIO OV-8926 Steam and Hot Water HEATING session, various members had this and that to say in answer to question: "What good turn has this class ever done for you?" Mr. A. S. Phelps called on first, and taken somewhat by surprise, answered by saying that he considered it a good turn that other members of the class tolerated his presence. Mr. Oyler was glad for the friendly greeting of an unnamed class member recently. He also remarked: "As a Bible Class why not bear the fruits of a Bible Class." W. V. Smith told of attending Bible School for over seventy years in fifteen states, probably never having missed three straight Sundays. He prefers Bible School to church, tho he always attends church and remarked that "this class is spiritual life to me". Mr. Smith recalled the time early in GLASPY COAL SALES Ohio Lump $4.95 - $5.40 Piney Fork $5.75 West Va. Next class member, Burt Mineard, "Likes to know the men", while W. J. Henry gets a big kick out of being present each Sunday (he was. absent last Sunday morning however), but enjoys most getting other men out to Bible school who have not been present fox sometime. He also gets much enjoyment out of hearing Rev. Hulme teach. Mr. Zimmerman reported that he enjoyed the teaching of Rev. Hulme, which same thot was expressed by others present (nineteen all told), Will Lodge having attended Sunday school for over sixty years of his short life and this Bible school for nearly twenty-three years, was of the opinion that no Bible school, no church and no Men's class (orchestra and choir included) could or ever did compare with ours. Over half of this second hundred was paid in or pledged within five minutes and now treasurer Phelps is looking around for a few other five dollars to this fund Sunday? The next meeting of the Men's Brotherhood will be held the second Sunday evening in February. LADIES BIBLE CLASS MEETING The Ladies Bible Class will hold their regular monthly meeting Tuesday evening January 28th at the home of Mrs. R. K. Palmer on River Road. All class members nhould plan to attend. <s> RED CROSS Ladies are needed by the Red Cross to sew for the children of Europe who must spend so much of their time in shelter houses. They need warm clothing, plain garments, such as nighties, diapers and small dresses. We meet every Tuesday from 10 a. ni. to 4:00 p. m. in the Community building across from the high school. Come. Bring your own lunch. MONEY Since Rev. Hulme's article two weeks ago setting forth the plight of this paper, scarcely a day has passed but that one or more subscriptions have been received. The amounts paid in have varied from fifty cents to ten dollars. Several FISH SUPPER A group of ladies from the church are serving a fish supper Thursday January 23rd starting at 5:30 p. m. This supper will be held in the church basement. The public is invited. <S> Pride goeth before destruction and an haughty spirit before a fall. Prov. 16:18.

10 THE COMMUNITY CHURCH in l i t t e r s accompaning their subscriptions have been quite complimentary. Some also, have wondered why we do not change the date m a r k on the address tag. This has been explained before. To set the type for a new subscriber address costs us nearly four cents. As an example, last week we had 128 new subscribers and address changes to be added to our list. The cost was $4.50. To make address change for eleven hundred would cost over $40.00. So, unless the subscriber demands it we will use t h e old1 addresses as long as possible or until someone presents us with an addressograph. (Will Lodge offers a $350.00 adding machine.) To show how it is easily possible to build up a deficit consider the last week's issue of this paper. The cost of linotype, paper envelope^, ink, postage and printing was $28.15. The paper contained 28.7 per cent advertising, the expected income from which amounted to $16.84. This would m a k e a net loss of $11.31. On the other hand the issue before last, i. e., issue one of this y e a r contained a little over f i f t y per cent advertising the expected income f r o m which would p a y all costs of t h a t one issue and leave a little over one dollar to apply on the red balance. <s>.
