Fourth Sunday of Easter April 17, 2016 The Joy of Love Pastor s Note The Joy of Love (in Latin, Amoris Laetitia) is the name of Pope Francis recently released Apostolic Exhortation on Family Life and Marriage, in which the Holy Father encourages families to experience the joy of love. It is a wonderful message for all of us today. I would recommend that each person read the actual apostolic exhortation, not settling with the comments or the news about this document that are readily found online, in the newspaper, or in this article; these cannot reflect the whole message of the exhortation. After a beautiful reflection on the gift of family, the Pope addresses the concerns of the two recent Synods on the Family, which centered on the challenges that families face in our time. While the value of the family is emphasized in the document, there are a number of realities presented in the exhortation for our consideration. I will mention just a few of them: The Church needs to meet people where they are. Understand the complexity of the world in which we live and the challenges that all the members of families face, and as a consequence avoid judgment which does not take into account the complexity of various situations (296). The Situation of second marriage and divorce should be considered with an approach which carefully discerns the situation (with understanding and compassion) knowing that there are no easy recipes (298). At the same time, it is clear that divorce and remarriage is not the ideal that the Gospel proposes for marriage and family. One of the most important recurring themes in the Document is the primacy of the role of the conscience. The Church has been called to form consciences, not to replace them (37). While The Pope insists that our consciences need to be formed by the teachings of the Church, conscience give us a a certain moral security about what God is asking (303). Pastors, therefore, need to help people not simply follow rules, but to practice discernment, a word that implies prayerful decision making (304). April 16- April 23 Saturday 5:00 Georgena Gomes Sunday 7:00 Rose Zukas 8:30 St. Martin of Tours Parishioners 10:00 Ronald Sieben 11:30 Michale Giammona 6:00 Karl Maurtz Monday 8:00 Catherine Minarovic Tuesday 8:00 Justin Semana Wednesday 8:00 Bernard Cabading Thursday 8:00 Souls in Purgatory Friday 8:00 Jeanne Sabatte Saturday 8:00 Right to Life These are just a few themes of the apostolic exhortation; there are many more that will help families to grow in the Joy of Love, knowing that, no family drops down from heaven perfectly formed; families need constantly to grow and mature in the ability to love. This is a never-ending vocation born of the full communion of the Trinity, the profound unity between Christ and his Church, the loving community which is the Holy Family of Nazareth, and the pure fraternity existing among the saints of heaven (325). -Fr. As many of you know, Betty Dillane passed away last year. Betty was a long time parishioner and left her house to St. Martin of Tours Church. The House has been sold and the church has received the proceeds from the sale. We are grateful for the generous donations. Setting the Record Straight On March 10, the San Jose Mercury News printed an editorial that was critical of future development of land in the southeast quadrant of Morgan Hill. The Diocese of San Jose owns 40 acres that has been purchased for the future Saint John XXIII College Preparatory High School. In stating its editorial opinion, the Mercury erroneously reported that the Diocese had previously purchased and sold another piece of land in Morgan Hill, implying that the Diocese would likely do the same with the 40 acres. In fact, the Diocese never owned that land, only the 40 acres in the southeast. On March 11, the Local Agency Formation Commission (LAFCO) voted to deny applications for development on # of acres, including the site of Saint John XXIII. In doing so, LAFCO effectively shut the door for this and any other development in the near future. Although the Mercury printed a correction the following day, most readers were not aware of the error or that the newspaper had not done due diligence in establishing the facts. As for the future, Bob Serventi Chief Financial Officer for the Diocese, affirms that the land will continue to be held for use for a Catholic high school. Last Saturday we held the Celebration of Life mass, anointing of the sick, a luncheon and entertained 70 guests to a day that will be etched in their memory for life. It was a happy, bright and colorful event, with great food cooked by the ICF and served by many volunteers. The children's art draping the walls put a smile on everyones face. The pick a pocket lady laden with surprises for all was our very own Roberta Williams. This event would not be possible without countless hours from volunteers of our Parish Ministries, Confirmation children, and the never failing ICF. When things run smoothly you know there are a lot of hard workers and moving parts in the background. Thank you to everyone involved, you truly were wonderful and did it with a smile. You were part of creating great memories. Blessing to you all.
