FROM THE PASTOR S DESK This weekend the feast of the Exaltation of the Cross, observed every September 14, replaces the Twenty-fourth Sunday of the year in Ordinary Time. Our Sunday Visitor Press not long ago issued a small devotional book by Mike Aquilina, Signs & Mysteries: Revealing Ancient Christian Symbols. Through clever use of descriptions and drawings, it takes us into the minds, feelings and prayers of the earliest believers in Christ. For many centuries the cross has been the most widely used Christian symbol. But it took a long time to reach that status. Although scholars continue to debate why this was so, the likeliest explanation for this surprising fact is the horror people of that early era had ofthe brutally degrading death by crucifixion, which Aqulina describes vividly: EXALTATION OF THE HOLY CROSS, SEPTEMBER 14, 2014,,, [T]here was no more grotesque way to be executed. The ancient Romans had a special genius for torture, and crucifixion was utmost refinement of their art. It was designed to cause the most pain in the most parts of the body over the longest period of time. The cross was humiliating, too, so it was usually reserved for slaves, non-citizens, lower-class criminals or those whose crimes were especially heinous. The scholar Larry Hurtado argues strongly that the first images of the cross are the small cross-monograms in some of the oldest Christian manuscripts. The first certain pictorial representation of the crucifixion, a graffito dating to the Second Century, was actually one that derided Christians. It shows a man paying homage to a crucified donkey, and has the accompanying caption: Alexamenos worships his god. Anti-Christian disdain for the cross can also be seen in writings of the Church s early apologists, which defended believers from pagan contempt. The earliest scene of the Gospel accounts of Calvary so far discovered is a Third-Century stone graffito recently found at Irun a-veleia, in Spain s Basque region. It depicts the three crosses, with Jesus affixed to his, as Mary and John keep vigil. The early Christians certainly incorporated the cross in their daily devotions. Tertullian (c. 180) described the custom of believers frequently tracing the sign of the cross over their foreheads. And the early martyr St. Ignatius of Antioch (c. 100) movingly wrote: As for me, my spirit is now all humble devotion to the cross the cross which so greatly offends the unbelievers, but is salvation and eternal life to us. And, as many as fifty years earlier, St. Paul had written to the Galatians: may I never boast except in the cross of Our Lord Jesus Christ. (Gal 6, 14) The cross has been an unforgettable part of our faith from the very first times. Msgr. David Hubba 3 SOCIAL CONCERNS MEETING SEPTEMBER 18 The Saint Joseph Social Concerns Committee will be meeting this coming Thursday, September 18 in the Saint Joseph lower school library at 7:30 pm. God told Moses to make a serpent out of bronze and put it on a pole. Everyone who looked at it would be healed. God put an end to the serpents and helped the Hebrew people. Many years later, Jesus was lifted up on the cross. We look at him and know that Jesus is our strength, our hope, and our healing. Look at the cross and say, "Jesus, I believe in you." 6
