Third Sunday of Advent The first two weeks of Advent have focused on action that of Christ in the first week and of us (moved by Christ) in the second. But in this third week, we now ask Christ to lift the veil of sin from our minds. Known as Gaudete Sunday, today marks a traditional turning point in the period of preparation. We light our rose candle on our Advent wreath as a symbol of our coming joy. Pope Francis tells us in Evangelii Gaudium 7, that we seek the joy that flows from the infinite love of God, who has revealed himself to us in Jesus Christ. This faith that the Lord is near fills our heart with joy. It is a joy that the world cannot take away because it is rooted in the faithfulness of our God who loves us unconditionally. Confident in the love and goodness of our God, let us be thankful and let us be kind. Then our joy will be known to all and begin to spread into a world that is hungry for hope. If we do that, this Christmas will be a time of real joy for us not the sentimental, nostalgic kind that the world settles for but true joy which rejoices in a God who became man so that He could be near us. St. Joseph Parish Music Ministry Director Recognized at St. Patrick s Cathedral Gerard B. Mirandilla, Director of the St. Joseph Parish Music Ministry, was recognized on December 1 st at St. Patrick s Cathedral in the Archdiocese of New York. He received a commendation for his valuable contributions as Choir Director of a Unified Filipino Choir that provided Philippine mass music at the annual Simbang Gabi sa Katedral. Reverend Monsignor Robert T. Ritchie, Rector of the St. Patrick s Cathedral, presented the award to him at the conclusion of this year s Eucharistic celebration. The Unified Filipino Choir which includes some of our very own parishioners who traveled to the North to join in such musical collaboration with other parishioners from New Jersey and New York was also recognized with a plaque of appreciation. This is the second time that Gerard and several St. Joseph parishioners have participated in the Simbang Gabi sa Katedral the annual inaugural mass that launches a series of Christmas novena masses in many parishes in the Archdiocese. Simbang Gabi is a glorious and meaningful religious tradition practiced in the Philippines as the novena counterpart offering for the birth of our Lord whereby nine consecutive masses are celebrated during the advent season. In contrast to the St. Joseph contingent s first choral stint at St. Patrick s in 2016 and for the first time since its inception twelve years ago, this year s mass was officiated in the Philippine national language and, just like in 2016, aptly complemented by songs in the same language.
