Please remain seated, while, from the porch, the choir sings the Introit Carol: O Come, O Come Emmanuel Music: Plainsong Melody Arranged: J. H. Arnold Please stand for the Processional Hymn: "Once in Royal David's City" All 3. And through all his wondrous childhood He would honour and obey, Love and watch the lowly maiden, In whose gentle arms he lay: Christian children all must be mild Obedient, good as he. 4. For he is our childhood s pattern, Day by day, like us he grew, He was little, weak and helpless, Tears and smiles like us he knew: And he feeleth for our sadness, And he shareth in our gladness. Solo 1. Once in royal David's city Stood a lowly cattle shed, Where a mother laid her baby In a manger for his bed: Mary was that mother mild, Jesus Christ her little child. Choir 2. He came down to earth from heaven Who is God and Lord of all, And his shelter was a stable, And his cradle was a stall. With the poor, despised and lowly Lived on earth our Saviour holy. 5. And our eyes at last shall see him, Through his own redeeming love, For that child so dear and gentle Is our Lord in Heaven above; And he leads his children on To the place, where he is gone. 6. Not in that poor lowly stable, With the oxen standing by, We shall see him; but in heaven, Set at God s right hand on high; Where like stars his children crowned, All in white shall wait around. Words: C. F. Alexander Music: H. J. Gauntlet Descant: Sir D. Willcocks Please be seated to hear the Bidding and to say the Lord s Prayer. 2

Welcome to our Advent Carol service. Tonight we will journey together in this season of Advent. The word Advent derives from the Latin word meaning coming. It is a time of joy and expectation as we await the birth of Jesus the Christ. And yet, we also know that Jesus has come among us, has brought his message of hope and freedom, and died on the cross and rose again and is present in the world today and that He will come again. At the beginning of this service tonight, we lit the four blue candles symbolising Hope, Love, Joy and Peace and the white candle representing Christ the one we long for! The light of the candles remind us that Jesus is the light of the world that comes into the darkness of our lives to bring newness, life and hope. It also reminds us that we are called to be a light to the world as we reflect the light of God s grace to others. As we enter this time of worship through word, music, silence, and visual aids, may the flickering of each candle remind us that something is happening and that more is yet to come! First, we acknowledge the traditional custodians of the land upon which we meet. Let us pray for the needs of the whole world; Holy Child of Bethlehem, whose parents found no room in the inn; we pray for all who are homeless. Holy Child of Bethlehem, born in a stable; we pray for all who are living in poverty. Holy Child of Bethlehem, rejected stranger; we pray for all who are lost, alone, all who cry for loved ones. Holy Child of Bethlehem, whom Herod sought to kill; we pray for all who live with danger, all who are persecuted. Holy Child of Bethlehem, a refugee in Egypt; we pray for all who are far from their homes. Holy Child of Bethlehem, in you the Eternal was pleased to dwell; help us, we pray, to see the divine image in people everywhere. 'Holy Child of Bethlehem'-David Blanchflower All Year Round (British Council of Churches 1987) 3

Lastly, let us remember before God all those who rejoice with us around the world who will be kneeling before the Christ-child and seeing him anew this Christmas. Let us now bring our prayers together and say the Lord's Prayer: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your Name. your kingdom come. your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil: For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen. Please sit while the choir sings the Invitatory Carol: All My Heart This Night Rejoices Words: P. Gerhardt Music: J.G. Hymn: Of the Father s Love Begotten 1. Of the Father s love begotten, Ere the worlds began to be, He is Alpha and Omega, He the source, the ending He, Of the things that are, that have been, And that future years shall see, Evermore and evermore! 2. O that birth forever blesséd, When the Virgin, full of grace, By the Holy Ghost conceiving, Bore the Saviour of our race; And the Babe, the world s Redeemer, First revealed His sacred face, Evermore and evermore! 3. This is He Whom seers and sages Sang of old with one accord, Whom the voices of the prophets Promised in their faithful word; Now He shines, the long expected, Let creation praise its Lord, Evermore and evermore! 4. In the heights of heaven adore him, Angel hosts his praises sing, All dominions bow before him And extol our God and King; Let no tongue on earth be silent, Every voice in concert sing Evermore and Evermore! Hymn: O Little Town of Bethlehem 1. O little town of Bethlehem, How still we see thee lie! Above thy deep and dreamless sleep The silent stars go by. Yet in thy dark streets shining The everlasting light; The hopes and fears of all the years Are met in you tonight. 2. For Christ is born of Mary; And, gathered all above, While mortals sleep, the angels keep Their watch of wond'ring love. O morning stars together Proclaim the holy birth, And praises sing to God the King, And peace to all on earth. 3. How silently, how silently, The wondrous gift is giv'n! So God imparts to human hearts The blessings of his heav'n. No ear may hear his coming; But in this world of sin, Where meek souls will receive him, Still The dear Christ enters in. 4. O holy child of Bethlehem, Descend to us we pray; Cast out our sin, and enter in, Be born in us today.
