AUGUST 12, 2018-19th Sunday of Ordinary Time First Reading: I Kings 19:4-8 Queen Jezebel had vowed to kill Elijah, who went into the desert and prayed for death. Instead he went to sleep and was awakened by an angel, who told him to eat the food God had given him. He ate and went back to sleep, but God s angel again woke him and told him to eat. Strengthened by the food, he got up and walked forty days and nights to the mountain of God. Second Reading: Ephesians 4:30-5:2 Paul appeals to the Ephesians to get rid of bitterness, anger, and malice. Instead they must be kind, compassionate, and forgiving just as God has been. We must be imitators of Christ, and love one another as he has loved us. Gospel: John 6:41-51 The Jews were not convinced that Jesus was the bread that came down from heaven. But he again explains that he is the bread of life. He tells them that anyone who believes and eats this bread shall live forever. He explains that the bread he will give is his flesh, for the life of the world. A FRESH PERSPECTIVE ON THE SUNDAY READINGS HIS WORD TODAY by Rev. William J. Reilly Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time August 12, 2018 Elijah prayed for death, saying: This is enough, O Lord. Take my life, for I am no better than my fathers. He lay down and fell asleep under the broom tree, but then an angel touched him and ordered him to get up and eat for the angel of the Lord came back a second time, touched him and ordered Get up and eat, else the journey will be too long for you. He got up, ate and drank he walked forty days and nights to the mountain of God, Horeb. We return to Capernaum and find Jesus telling us I AM the bread of life. It is in the Eucharist we find Jesus present to accompany us on our journey. Elijah was awakened twice and was ordered to brace himself for the journey. Jesus is the bread of life for us. We often overlook how great, how important, how necessary is this gift for our spiritual survival. How many people in the world die each day of starvation? Too many, and we are called to assist them. How many people in the church take the gift of the Eucharist for granted? We speak of a priest shortage, while we should focus on the lack of appreciation for the gift of the Eucharist. Where in our world are people deprived of what is so essential, yet we sometimes take the priesthood, the mass and Eucharist for granted. If Jesus is the bread of life, I need to go to Him with renewed fervor and gratitude. Get up and eat, else the journey will be too long for you.

Msgr. Gorman will celebrate his last Sunday Mass at St. Matthew s on August 26. We will have a reception for him following the 8:30 am mass in the school. The reception will be an opportunity to thank him and say goodbyes. Since the Archdiocese has asked us to reduce the number of Sunday Masses this is opportune time to adjust our mass schedule. For two years now over the Summer we have combined the 8:00 am & the 9:00 am into the 8:30 am Mass. As we will now have one less priest we will extend the summer schedule throughout the year.
