f Twelfth Sunday in Ordinary Time June 20, 2010 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free person, there is not male and female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus. Galatians 3:28 Let s share the Good News In today s gospel Jesus asked the disciples What s the word out on the streets about me? What are the people saying about me? The disciples told Jesus what they were hearing. What if Jesus asked us the same question today? How would we answer him? Our answers would be something like this: Some say you don t exist and if you do, you aren t relevant. Others say, You are a strict God with laws that have to be obeyed to the letter or else. Still others will say, You are a God who loves and watches over us as a loving parent watches over his/her children. Not much. People usually don t talk about you or even think about you. Jesus asked Peter, Who do you say I am? How would you answer that question? Would you be willing to publicly tell your answer to others or are you embarrassed to talk about God? Does your life speak your belief in God to people who don t even know you? In the gospel on this particular occasion Jesus told the disciples not to tell anyone that he is the Christ but for us the situation is different. As baptized Christians we are told to go out and speak about and be witnesses of Jesus Christ. We are to share the GOOD NEWS. The word gospel means good news. The word evangel" means "good news" or "gospel." We have the task to evangelize or share the good news of the gospel. How will we do this? Most people, especially Catholics, shy away from evangelizing because of our experience with people who come knocking at our door wanting us to go to their church or we think of the flamboyant preachers we see on TV or at the mega churches. Catholics ARE called to evangelize but not necessarily in such overt ways. One important way to evangelize is to share our faith with our children, grandchildren, and family members. It is so important to talk about God and to pray with members of our family. To do this we must reflect on our image of God and be able to articulate who Jesus is to us. If the children never hear us talk about religion, they will grow up thinking that religion is not a subject that is to be talked about and, therefore, not practiced. We must witness our faith by the way we live and we must also be willing to talk about our faith. If we believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Anointed One, the Son of God, let s share the GOOD NEWS! Sr. Karen Marie Pictorial Directory St. Paul s will be doing a Pictorial Directory. Pictures will be taken during the first couple weeks of September. Sign-up will be in August.

Despite these struggles, the faithful have shown that they consider it a priority to help those less fortunate than themselves through their support of the Peter s Pence Collection. God s love... gives us the courage to continue seeking and working for the benefit of all (Caritas in Veritate, no. 78). The Peter s Pence Collection allows the Holy Father to support victims of disaster, war, and oppression and others most in need of emergency assistance. The Pope, being pastor of the whole, is attentive to the material needs of poor dioceses, religious institutes, and the faithful in grave difficulties. Through loving charity, the Holy Father casts Christ s love upon the world. Nazareth Boys Town in Mbare, Rwanda, received assistance from Pope Benedict XVI for abandoned orphans who are victims of genocide and civil war. Casa di accoglienza Giovanni Paolo II Opera Don Orione, a residence that gives free shelter and specializes in assisting special-needs pilgrims traveling to Rome, was recently refurbished through the Peter s Pence Collection. And in Bosnia, the Hospital of St. Vincent de Paul, a health institution in Sarajevo staffed by religious, was established with support from the Collection. Please be generous in the Collection and, in doing so, cast the love of Christ upon the world. Thank you and God bless you! Sincerely in Christ, Most Rev. J. Peter Sartain Most Rev. Joseph M. Siegel
