The Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time 1 KGS 19:4-8; PS 34:2-9; EPH 4:30-5:2; JN 6:41-51 August 12, 2018 Encouraging the Body of Christ to BE the Body of Christ... continued from:... inculuration... Expressing our Faith in Christ, as Catholics, in and through the language, culture and world-views of diverse peoples... The Vatican Council made explicit an openness to celebrate the Mass, our Liturgy, in the various languages of human society, as one expression (of many) that Jesus Christ is Lord of All, Savior of humankind, and having been born into human history, and human experience (as a first century Jew, in Palestine), His Church (OUR Church) needs to have a consideration of the unique world-views and symbolic meanings that each culture has (e.g., the color white in European/American culture signifies life and joy, though to the Chinese, white represents death; alternatively, red means life and thanksgiving ). Contrarily, with this openness to diversity (as evident in these different images/portrayals of Christ signify which would have been unheard of in centuries past), there was resistance by some that by not praying in Latin, we lose touch with our past and the universality of our worship. At times, the Constitution seems to represent both sides of a discussion, which is most clearly evident with respect to Latin. Among the Council Fathers, there were strong views in favor of allowing the use of the language of the streets (the vernacular) and those who were strident to continue the use of only Latin. In #36, a both-and approach is also evident in the section on music. New musical compositions are welcomed (#121) and a variety of instruments may be used (#120), but Gregorian chant is warmly recommended (#116) and pipe organs are affirmed (#120).... more to follow...

Faith in Action LOVE is not a feeling but a truth lived... How is that evident? In an effort to address the homeless condition of our local veterans, a decrepit motel in our neighborhood is being renovated to provide housing, and office for social service support and intervention, for those who had served in the military, and now live on the streets! Responding in faith and love, some of our parishioners are being instruments of Christ s Love by providing a sign of welcome, hospitality, and affirmation, to these brothers and sisters who have felt so abandoned, ignored or actively dismissed. In a recent television piece, on NBC Channel 7/39, one of our parishioners, Sharon Dilloway, poignantly and gracefully explained, how her act of charity is done in (and with) prayer! WWW.NBCSANDIEGO.COM/ON-AIR/AS-SEEN-ON/VOLUNTEERS-KNIT-QUILTS-FOR-VETS-INTRANSITION_SAN-DIEGO-489882341.HTML God bless her, and ALL those who live their faith, believing/doing/living as St. Teresa of Ávila (circa 1555) so gracefully taught: Christ has no body now but yours. No hands, no feet on earth but yours. Yours are the eyes through which he looks compassion on this world. Yours are the feet with which he walks to do good. Yours are the hands through which he blesses all the world. Yours are the hands, yours are the feet, yours are the eyes, you are his body. Christ has no body now on earth but yours. LITURGY OF THE WORD WITH CHILDREN LET THE CHILDREN COME TO ME! G OSPEL OF MARK This ministry, which we want to offer would allow the children of our community (kindergarten 2nd Grade) to celebrate the first part of the Mass at their level at the 9:00 and 11:00 am Masses. We NEED adults and teens to serve as leaders who would prepare and present the gospel story in a manner suitable for children! We also need aides to help each week. All of our catechists, helpers, and liturgical ministers of the Word are ALL volunteers who share their time and faith! We will provide needed training, resources, and support. WOULD YOU CONSIDER SERVING? If so, would you contact Ms. Bonnie Hernandez, by e-mail (bonnie@stthereseparish.org) or call 619-582-3716 ext. 102.

This foundational, 22-week Bible study is designed for women who are new to WWP as well as those with more Bible study experience. We welcome past participants and invite new women to join us! In addition to Keeping in Balance- a good starting point in the morning, will also offer Fearless and Free (an advanced study) in the morning and Living in our Father s Love a shorter 6 week study in the evening. All studies work with you individually to grow a deeper connection with God in allowing yourself to be more authentic. Walking with Purpose is a Catholic Bible study that aims to bring women to a deeper, personal relationship with Christ through personal study and small group discussions that link our everyday challenges with solutions given to us through the teachings of Christ and the Catholic Church. We will meet Thursday mornings from 9-11am in the social center, and evenings from 7-9pm in the Little Flower room beginning September 20 th, 2018. Childcare will be available for the morning session.
