All we know are the facts of the sojourn in Egypt, the return to Nazareth, and the incidents that occurred when the twelve-year-old boy accompanied his parents to Jerusalem. In the liturgy the Church hurries over this period of Christ s life with equal brevity. The general breakdown of the family, however, at the end of the past century and the beginning of our own, prompted the popes, especially the far-sighted Leo XIII, to promote the observance of this feast with the hope that it might instill into Christian families something of the faithful love and the devoted attachment that characterize the family of Nazareth. The primary purpose of the Church in instituting and promoting this feast is to present the Holy Family as the model and exemplar of all Christian families. - Excerpted from With Christ Through the Year, Rev. Bernard Strasser, O.S.B.

We wish you a Happy and Blessed New Year 2019! Let us all welcome Fr. Sajan who will be celebrating Mass for us this weekend! January 3rd - The Most Holy Name of Jesus This is an optional Memorial. According to the 1962 Missal of St. John XXIII the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite this feast is celebrated on January 2. In the liturgical revision of Vatican II, the feast was removed, though a votive Mass to the Holy Name of Jesus had been retained for devotional use. With the release of the revised Roman Missal in March 2002, the feast was restored as an optional memorial in the Ordinary Form on January 3. The Church reveals to us the wonders of the Incarnate Word by singing the glories of His name. The name of Jesus means Savior; it had been shown in a dream to Joseph together with its meaning and to Our Lady at the annunciation by the Archangel Gabriel. Devotion to the Holy Name is deeply rooted in the Sacred Scriptures, especially in the Acts of the Apostles. It was promoted in a special manner by St. Bernard, St. Bernardine of Siena, St. John Capistrano, and by the Franciscan Oder. It was extended to the whole Church in 1727 during the pontificate of Innocent XIII. The month of January has traditionally been dedicated to the Holy Names of Jesus. - From CatholicCulture.org January 1st is the Solemnity of Mary, the Holy Mother of God and is a Holy Day of Obligation. The Vigil Mass will be Monday, December 31st at 5:30 pm. The Mass on New Year s Day will be at 10:30 am. Mary, the all-holy ever-virgin Mother of God, is the masterwork of the mission of the Son and the Spirit in the fullness of time. For the first time in the plan of salvation and because his Spirit has prepared her, the Father found the dwelling place where his Son and His Spirit could dwell among men. In this sense the Church s Tradition has often read the most beautiful texts on wisdom in relation to Mary. Mary is acclaimed and represented in the liturgy as the Seat of Wisdom. - Catechism of the Catholic Church 721 Liturgical Ministry Schedule for January 5th & 6th Saturday 5:30 pm Sunday 8:00 am Sunday 10:30 am Acolytes Volunteers Volunteers Volunteers Lectors Karen White Mickey Dunn Bruce Beckman Ushers Scott White Terry Henkel Hubert Rohling Gary Rohling Jr. Akins Clarence Kerstiens Sacristy Mary Henn ******* Sheri Osborn ExOrd Eu Mnstrs Scott White Korey & Kristy Whitehead Blake Lay Marian Pickett, Ann Basinger Bruce Beckman All Kerstiens, Rita Wilburn Shut-ins Greeters Team I Scott & Samantha Benefield ******* Korey & Kristy Whitehead Gary & Lane Rohling Hubert & Ann Rohling Team II Korey & Kristy Whitehead
