From the Desk of...fr. John Twenty-Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time September 30, 2018 Few of us go through life without ever joining a group or a club. Some people take pride in their membership of a whole range of different groupings. For some, the more select the group the better they feel. Joining a particular group, religious or political or social, can enlarge our world and introduce us to new people and new possibilities. It can help us to move within a relatively secure network of relationships. That sense of belonging is important to our identity. Membership can be a proof of how others accept and recognize how we see ourselves. In today s Gospel, the disciples of Jesus refuse to recognize the authority of an exorcist who does not belong to their company. John appealed to Jesus: Master, we saw a man who is not one of us casting out devils in your name; and because he was not one of us, we tried to stop him. The disciples are obviously threatened by the outsider s success. The interesting thing to remember is that the disciples are themselves outsiders in their own society. In a world where they hope to be recognized and accepted in Jesus name, Jesus asks them to extend the same favor to others. This lesson is instructive for ourselves. Jesus calls on each of us to be tolerant. Christian tolerance is a reverence for the truth that is always larger than ourselves; it is recognition of the charity that flourishes beyond the reaches of our borders; it is a profound respect for the freedom of God to move in His chosen ways. It is a humility before the goodness of God. After all, if God risks hoping in us, why should we deny His hope in others? As we celebrate our Annual Fiesta, the Feast of our Patron Saint, Saint Michael the Archangel, We thank God for the gift of life. While praying of the happy repose of all our parishioners who have gone before us and healing mercy of God on all our parishioners who are sick, I wish you all a very happy feast day. VIVA LA FIESTA!
