The Lord declared he would write his law upon their hearts, and that he would forgive their evil and forget the sins they had committed in the past. SECOND READING: HEBREWS 5:7-9 Though God could have heeded his Son s prayers and spared him suffering, Jesus accepted his Fathers will. Through his suffering, he learned obedience and became the source of eternal salvation for all people. GOSPEL: JOHN 12:20-33 Jesus was afraid of the suffering he knew he must face. Yet he explained just as a grain of wheat must die to be harvested, he had to face his hour of suffering to glorify his Father s name. Jesus explained that once he was lifted from earth, he could draw all people to himself, lifting them to eternal life. Baptisms are celebrated on Saturday mornings at 9:45am or by appointment, following preparation of the parents. Baptisms for adults take place through the RCIA process. CONFIRMATION: Through the sacrament of confirmation, the baptized are more perfectly bound to the church and are enriched with a special strength of the Holy Spirit. Confirmation is offered to adults through the RCIA process, and annually for our eighth-grade students. As with the other sacraments of initiation, preparation is involved. MATRIMONY: Couples should contact the parish office as soon as possible or at least six months in advance of the desired wedding date to make arrangements for preparation. A NOINTING OF THE SICK: Our parish continues Christ s ministry of making whole the members of our community who suffer physical or emotional ills with Anointing of the Sick. Please call the parish office if you would like to receive this sacrament.

He followed God s instructions, given by angels in dreams, and took the pregnant Mary into his home as his wife, protected her and Jesus from the child s birth in Bethlehem through the family s sojourn in Egypt, and provided for them as a carpenter in Nazareth. This feast, which was celebrated locally as early as the ninth century, became a universal feast in the 16th century. 5 March 18, 2018 FIFTH SUNDAY OF LENT POPE S CORNER SERVANT OF MERCY God forgives every man in his sovereign mercy, but he himself willed that those who belong to Christ and to the Church receive forgiveness by means of the ministers of the community. Through the apostolic ministry the mercy of God reaches me, my faults are forgiven and joy is bestowed on me The Church, who is holy and at the same time in need of penitence, accompanies us on the journey of conversion throughout our life. The Church is not mistress of the power of the keys, but a servant of the ministry of mercy and rejoices every time she can offer this divine gift. General Audience, November 20, 2013 Reflection: Jesus established the Sacrament of Reconciliation through the Church so that the Church could accompany us in our journey of conversion. Take time this week to experience God s mercy in this great sacrament. THE POPE S PRAYER INTENTIONS The Holy Father asks for our prayers for a specific intention each month. You are invited to answer the Holy Father's request and to join with many people worldwide in praying for these intentions. MARCH INTENTION Evangelization: Formation in Spiritual Discernment That the Church may appreciate the urgency of formation in spiritual discernment, both on the personal and communitarian levels. GOOD FRIDAY COLLECTION FOR THE HOLY LAND On Good Friday, the Archdiocese of Washington will take up the annual Pontifical Collection for the Holy Land. The challenges for Christians living in the Holy Land are great. Many have chosen to leave, and others continue to do so, depleting the Christian faith communities there and making the need of families that remain all the more urgent. The Good Friday Collection aids the ministry of the Holy Land Franciscans, who for 800 years have nourished Christians in the Holy Land with presence, care, and service. Your support helps the Church to minister in parishes, provide Catholic schools, and offer religious education. It also helps to preserve the sacred shrines in the land where our faith was born. Please be generous as you are able. Consider enrolling in egiving through Faith Direct so that your gift can reach us even when you cannot. Visit www.faithdirect.net and use our church code: DC43 or call 866-507- 8757 for a registration form. S E C O N D C O L L E C T I O N March 25: Homeless P OOR BOX Donations for the month of March will benefit Catholic Relief Services whose mission is to assist impoverished and disadvantaged people overseas, working in the spirit of Catholic social teaching.
