John Rogers Vien frjohnvien@mqpwg.org A NEW WEEK FR. JOHN VIEN I ve been writing these past weeks about all the many celebrations during these Easter and Springtime days. Over the last weeks, we have celebrated First Communions, Confirmations, Mother s Day, Graduations, and so many other wonderful days with our family and friends. The fifty days of the Easter Season are coming to a close next weekend, but our celebrations as Church continue for a number of Sundays to come! Part-time Assoc. Pastor: Rev. (For our MQP students, it s actually the official start of summer vacation, as we finished the school year this past Friday!) We know that Memorial Day is a sacred day to honor those men and women who gave their lives in service to our nation. This weekend, do not fail to pray for all the faithful departed, especially those who have served and gave their lives in the Army, Navy, Air Force, Merchant Marines, Coast Guard, National Guard, and Reserves. On Monday, May 29, there will be no 6:45am Mass, only Mass at 8:00am. Please join us to pray for those who made the greatest sacrifice for our freedoms. This Sunday, May 28, is the Feast of the Ascension of the Lord. We remember and celebrate that at the end of his days on earth after the Resurrection, Jesus ascended to the Father and to heaven, where he reigns forever in glory. Rather than celebrating Jesus absence from us, this feast challenges us to see Jesus in the many ways that he is still present to us: in the Church, the Eucharist, the Sacraments, the Scriptures, works of mercy, and deeds of kindness. In addition, the Lord is still present to us in the great gift of the Holy Spirit, which he promised he would send after he returned to the Father. Indeed, next Sunday, June 4, we celebrate the great feast of Pentecost, the 50 th and final day of the Easter Season, the feast of the Holy Spirit, and the birthday of the Church. After Easter and Christmas, did you know that Pentecost is the greatest feast in our Church calendar? So we should celebrate Pentecost Sunday with great fervor, praying that the Holy Spirit we received in Baptism and Confirmation may be stirred up in us once again, making us faithful missionary disciples of Jesus. As we celebrate Pentecost next Sunday, I encourage you to wear something red to Mass. Red is the color of the day, the color of the Holy Spirit, the color of fire that hovered over the Apostles and the Blessed Mother on that first Pentecost. Let us pray that we may more and more be a parish and people on fire with the Holy Spirit! We return to Ordinary Time after Pentecost, but our Sunday celebrations continue for a few more weeks. Sunday, June 11, is Trinity Sunday, when we celebrate and acclaim our God as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. This is a great mystery Three in One, One in Three that we can never fully comprehend, but it reminds and encourages us still to contemplate and consider the many ways that God reveals himself to us. Sunday, June 18, brings us the feast of the Body and Blood of Christ. We celebrate the gift of the institution of the Eucharist on Holy Thursday, but this seems overshadowed by the great events of Holy Week. So this Feast allows us to celebrate and honor the Eucharist with great joy and reverence! While this day was most often marked with processions and expositions of the Blessed Sacrament, I think that the greatest way we honor the Eucharist is by striving more and more to be full, active, and conscious participants at Holy Mass. Let us pray and work more and more to attend Mass, to pray and respond wholeheartedly, to show hospitality, to listen attentively, to sing with fervor, to practice generosity, and to lovingly and worthily receive and treasure our Lord who comes to us in his Body and Blood. May these coming feasts influence your personal prayer and formation in the faith. Happy Summer, one and all! Page 2

May 28 - The Ascension - Evangelization All of the Christian faithful, by virtue of their Baptism, are called by God to spread the Good News. Evangelization is not some exclusive mission that God has entrusted to a select few. Today we celebrate Christ s Ascension to the right hand of the Father; Christ has made captive our captivity (Ephesians 4:8). He calls us to walk in the freedom of the children of God, who joyfully announce to others the salvation He has won for us. Evangelization does not have to entail mission trips to foreign lands. It starts within our own minds and hearts. We can seek to learn more about our Catholic Faith and seek opportunities for catechesis and instruction. We can pray for guidance from the Holy Spirit each day. We can share the beautiful encounter we have had with the Lord with others through simple acts of charity and kindness. God is with us always! archstl.org/ SUNDAY YOUTH MASS Our final Youth Mass will be at 5:00pm Sunday, May 28. All our teens and families and parishioners are invited, especially as we continue to say Thanks and Farewell to Angela Fiordelisi for all her efforts as our Youth Minister. There will be no 5:00pm Sunday Mass during the summer months as we transition with a new Director of Youth Ministry, but we plan to begin the Youth Mass again after Labor Day. MARRIAGE BANNS Kathleen Naomi Kernell and Tyler Burch Gardner were married on Friday, May 26, at St. Luke s Church in Richmond Heights. GUIDE BOOK & DIRECTORY ADVERTISING OPPORTUNITY We are in the process of updating our annual Guide Book & Directory for the church. This book will contain everything pertinent to our church: the various ministries, organizations, committees, activities, functions & events plus a complete directory of all members. This book is being provided and direct-mailed to each family at no cost to our church, and it is again being subsidized by local businesses that advertise. If you own or manage a business and would like to find out about advertising in our book, please call the Parish Office. Recent survey results by Guide Book Publishing show that 92.1% of families would rather patronize a Guide Book & Directory advertiser over a non-advertiser. - It will pay to advertise in our new Guide Book & Directory.
