Thomas Rayar will be here to make a mission appeal for his native diocese, Sivagangai, India. The diocese of Sivagangai was established in 1987. This is a mission diocese in the State of Tamil Nadu, India consisting of Sivagangai and Ramnad civil districts, which are the poorest districts in the State. The diocese is in need of external help to run its mission consisting of 200,000 Catholics in a population of more than 2.5 million with an area of 8300 square kilometers. About 30% of our diocesan Catholics belong to the low caste who are economically and educationally poor and live on $2 per day. About 50% of the population consists of small farmers and unskilled laborers who heavily depend upon the erratic monsoon for their livelihood. The rest of the population (20%) belong to fishermen community. When the diocese was established there were only 48 priests, many of whom were aged. Today the diocese is proud of having 187 diocesan priests, 91 religious priests and 434 religious nuns serving in its mission. During the last 30 years the diocese has started many orphanages and primary schools, middle schools, high schools and secondary schools (183 total). There were only 39 parishes when the diocese was started. At present there are 83 parishes and 737 mission stations. The funds collected though this mission appeal will be used for work of evangelization and educational ministries for the poor children in the orphanages in the diocese of Sivagangai. Thank you very much for your generosity in supporting the mission of our universal Church. Lumen Christi Prayer Line Our Prayer Ministry will pray for your requests. Leave your prayer needs at 651-698-5581x101 or email volunteer@lumenchristicc.org. Lumen Christi Library Located down the main hallway I FOUND JESUS!: A SEEK AND DISCOVER BOOK By Jason Gruhl is interactive, using some of the messages Jesus shared, and it is about the culture and times of Jesus. The author aimed at bringing grade school age children closer to His teachings and to a life filled with peace, love and happiness. It can be used with individuals or groups and is very well illustrated. c2017

LUMEN CHRISTI CATHOLIC COMMUNITY Today s Readings Faith Formation Please register for Faith Formation this week or next! Look on the parish website under Youth Formation. Sacramental preparation registration for First Eucharist and Confirmation is separate and can be found under the Sacraments tab on the website. This Eucharistic Feast Some things about human nature don t change, even over the course of centuries. When we celebrate a holiday, we have a meal; when we celebrate a significant event, we have a feast. In today s first reading, Lady Wisdom is setting a feast, a sign of celebrating the covenant that Israel has with God. Israel s central remembrance of its saving Exodus covenant is the Passover meal. So it is natural and not coincidental that the Christian celebration of the new covenant sealed by the blood of Christ on the cross happens at a meal, our Eucharist, offered first by Jesus in the context of Passover remembrance. It is easy for us, sometimes, to forget the very long and rich religious and human origins of our eucharistic feasting on the bread and cup that are the Body and Blood of Jesus. Today, and for the next few Sundays that we hear the Bread of Life discourse from John, let us bring to mind the loving covenant that God makes with us, and be filled with great joy at this marvelous feast that we have come to attend! Your donation to Lumen Christi helps us continue our ministries. Thank you. Wisdom has built her house yes, she has spread her table. (Proverbs 9:1) Sunday morning faith formation classes are open to all students in grades 1-8 who wish (or whose parents wish) to grow in understanding. We seek to grow together in understanding and practice of the Catholic faith. Perhaps you are being invited to accompany these students as a catechist or helper. The parish provides the curriculum, training and support. Want to know more? Please contact Phyllis Hamill-Little in the parish office to discover your place at the table. Adult Formation: Romans Bible Study Now You Know Media presents Fr. Frank J. Matera, Ph. D., a leading expert on the Apostle Paul. Romans can be a challenging book of the Bible and these 6 talks on audio CDs are clear and engaging. A study guide is included. If you would like to borrow the set, please contact Phyllis Hamill-Little in the parish office. Pope s Quotes Faith is a Relationship, Not a Set of Rules Pope Francis says at Angelus Vatican City: Doing God's will means first of all believing in Jesus and allowing love for him to translate into love for one's neighbors, Pope Francis said. The Gospel story of the multiplication of loaves demonstrates the concern Jesus showed for people's daily physical needs, the pope said, but the passages that follow show how "it is even more important to cultivate our relationship with him, reinforcing our faith in him who is the 'bread of life' come to satisfy our hunger for truth, our hunger for justice, our hunger for love." LUMEN CHRISTI CATHOLIC COMMUNITY Discipleship & Parish Life Pastoral Care Strengthening our Relationship with Neighborhood House Save the date of Sept. 11 at 7:00 pm to learn more. As you are probably well aware, our primary partner for community outreach is Neighborhood House in St. Paul. One of Neighborhood House s service areas is at nearby Sibley Manor on W. Seventh St. As a parish we are developing new and unique opportunities for parishioners at Lumen Christi to volunteer and sustain positive outcomes for those who live nearby. If you are interested in how we can increase our impact in our community, set aside Tuesday, September 11 at 7:00 pm and attend an informational meeting in the First Floor Conference Room. We will explore how we can expand opportunities for service in the community, as we are called to do by virtue of our Baptism. Lumen Christi has, for a number of years, helped to fill their Food Shelf program with monthly collections, via the Angel Tree in December, and emergency fund assistance. There are opportunities for our parish to do even more to positively impact the lives of others. Do it. Justice Grief Support Group Beginning September 6, Lumen Christi will join forces with Nativity of Our Lord parish to offer a monthly Grief Support Group. The group, guided by trained grief facilitators, will meet the first Thursday of each month (September through June) from 9:00 10:00 am in the Bride s Room, located in the lower level of Nativity Church. We welcome all who have suffered a loss of someone or something of value, recognizing that grief is individual yet it is often eased when shared with others. For more information, or to request accessibility accommodation, please contact Nancy Shatek-Suek, Pastoral Minister at Nativity, by email at nshatek-suek@nativitymn.org or calling 651-696-5444. To map directions to the church, the address 1938 Stanford Ave., St. Paul, MN 55105 will guide you to the proper entry doors where there will be signage directing you to the meeting room. If you would like grief support but cannot make it to this group, please contact Torrey Cramer-Elsner, Pastoral Care Coordinator at Lumen Christi, for additional resources. Lumen Christi Justice IMMIGRATION SPOTLIGHT El Paso Faith Community, Papal Delegate Affirm Solidarity with Migrants EL PASO, TEXAS Interfaith leaders alongside Catholic bishops led a July 20 procession 900-strong through downtown El Paso, ending in a candlelight vigil for the plight of migrants and refugees. The interfaith service, held at St. Patrick Cathedral, kicked off a "Weekend of Solidarity with Migrants." Blessed Sacrament Fr. Robert Stark, of the Vatican's Migrants and Refugees Section, offered the keynote address at a July 21 "teach-in," which was titled "A Place at the Table: Faith, Migration and the Future of Our Border Communities." Catholics, joined by other Christian denominations and religions, created an overflow crowd at the cathedral, with many sitting in the aisles as they listened to testimonies from immigrants and heard prayers from religious leaders in the Episcopal, Presbyterian, Lutheran, Muslim and Baha'i faith traditions. In a powerful sermon, Stark reiterated Pope Francis' support of migrants and refugees. "What is going on today is the illegalization of legal migration," Stark told the crowd. "It is immoral to criminalize people seeking asylum, to separate families. Asylum is a basic instrument of protecting life." Using Francis' words, he invited the congregation to use a "contemplative gaze" to see all migrants as a gift. "Here at the border, you know that every stranger who knocks on the door is an opportunity to have an encounter with Christ," he said. "We miss that opportunity when we don't accompany the migrant and refugee. It's our loss." The Rev. Deborah Clugy-Soto, chair of the Interfaith Alliance-El Paso and Southern New Mexico, offered the final benediction. She said she was pleased with the message and the "very impressive turnout."
