Make a Gift through an IRA Charitable Rollover The IRA Charitable Rollover has been extended through 2012 and 2013. This extension allows individuals 70½ or older to move up to $100,000 from their IRAs directly to qualified charities such as your parish, Archbishop s Annual Appeal, the Archdiocese of Newark, or another archdiocesan institution without having to pay income taxes on the donated money. However, you will need to act fast to take advantage of the 2012 tax year. Qualified distributions made by February 1, 2013, may be counted retroactively for the 2012 tax year. Also, if you took a distribution from an IRA in December 2012, you may make a contribution to a qualified charity before February 1, 2013 and treat this as a direct transfer. For more information about how you and the Church can benefit from an IRA charitable rollover, please contact the Planned Giving Office at the Archdiocese of Newark. You can reach Theresa Lynch at (973) 497-4042 or by e-mail at lynchthe@rcan.org. SPOTLIGHT COURSES 5 The SPOTLIGHT program, sponsored by the Catechetical Office of the Archdiocese of Newark, offers introductory courses in Catholic teachings and scripture for adults. If you haven t had a recent opportunity to update your knowledge of our faith, consider taking a SPOTLIGHT course. Several courses focus on the main teachings of the Church as found in the Catechism of the Catholic Church. There are also courses on the Old Testament and the New Testament. Each course is completed in a single one day session on a Saturday, 9:30 AM - 3:30 PM. SPOTLIGHT is open to the general public. The following topics, locations and dates are offered in the coming weeks: Course 1: Spotlight on Faith The Creed: Our Heritage of Faith will be offered on Saturday, March 16, 2013, at the Church of Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament in Roseland. CHARITABLE DEDUCTION Media reports indicate that Congress is considering the elimination, reduction or capping of charitable giving tax deductions. Currently, contributions to our parish, to the Archdiocese and to Catholic Charities are tax deductible but they might not be tax deductible if some in Congress prevail. Parishioners are encouraged to contact members of Congress through the New Jersey Catholic Conference automated alert system available at http://www.capwiz.com/njcathconf/home/ Project Life and Liberty As Catholics, we believe that life is a gift from God that must be cherished and protected. Our faith obliges us to work both privately and publicly to defend life. As Americans, we believe that the freedom of religious expression, and the rights of conscience, are protected by the US Constitution and are equally in need of defense. At its November meeting, the Catholic Bishops of the United States agreed to launch a new postcard campaign 6 Project Life and Liberty to keep before the public and our elected representatives the Church s critical issues of religious freedom and pro-life concerns. Through Project Life and Liberty, we call on Congress to prevent federal funding and promotion of abortion, and to protect the rights of conscience in health care. Project Life and Liberty will be launched in February in partnership with the National Committee for a Human Life Amendment (NCHLA), which will coordinate the logistics of this postcard campaign. The Bishops of New Jersey are urging all Catholic people to join in informing our elected representatives in Washington to retain pro-life laws and policies, and protect the our Freedom of Religious Express and rights of conscience. The postcards are located at the end of each pew. Please complete them and return them in the collection box. The parish will arrange to mail them to Washington this week. Today, we have the opportunity to make not only the strongest possible statement about the Sanctity of life, but also to demonstrate our strength as people of faith and faithful citizens. Help us make this campaign to secure true progress in building a Culture of Life in our nation a success.
