The congregation is asked to remain silent during the prelude as a time of prayer and meditation. THE SERVICE FOR THE LORD S DAY February 5, 2017 11:00 A.M. Prelude GATHERING OF GOD S PEOPLE Welcome and Announcements (During this time the friendship pads are passed to be signed.) Minute for Mission Christian worship joyfully ascribes all praise and honor, glory and power to the triune God. In worship the people of God acknowledge God present in the world and in their lives. Choral Call to Worship Clara Scott, 1895 Open My Eyes That I May See Open my eyes, that I may see glimpses of truth thou hast for me. Place in my hands the wonderful key that shall unclasp and set me free. Silently now I wait for thee, ready, my God, thy will to see. Open my eyes; illumine me, Spirit divine! Opening Sentences Elder Curt Simpson Leader: This is one of the days the Lord has made. All: Let us rejoice and be glad in it. Leader: God has called us to be his people and to witness to his glory. All: Let us praise and glorify his name. *Hymn #35 "Praise Ye the Lord, the Almighty" LOBE DEN HERREN

\ In Jesus Christ, God entered fully into the human condition in an act of selfrevelation, redemption, and forgiveness. Entering the brokenness of the world, God in Jesus Christ atoned for sin and restored human life. The Word is also proclaimed through song in anthems and solos based on scriptural texts, in cantatas and oratorios which tell the biblical story, in psalms and canticles, and in hymns, spirituals, and spiritual songs which present the truth of the biblical faith. *Unison Prayer of Confession I admit to you, O God, that I am often distressed by the daily news: by the failure of nations to agree, by the insistent problems of hunger and disease and war and economy; by crime and negligence and immorality. But then I remember my own failures to contribute to good news in my family, my community and at times even my own church. As I now pray I remember that at times good news begins with me. I also confess that my sense of the reality of the presence of Christ in my life is not as strong as I wish it was, for then I would not be as shaken by the winds of adversity and I would stand like a strong tree planted beside sill waters. Forgive my weakness O God and deepen my faith. Through Christ s strength I pray, Amen. (A time for silent prayers of confession...) Responsive Assurance of Pardon Leader: God s forgiveness is as everlasting as the ages. All: His mercy is as wide as the seas. Leader: Surely He will forgive our shortcoming and our failures. All: He will restore a right spirit within us. Leader: We are forgiven. *Gloria Patri Children s Sermon Glory Be to the Father Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen, amen. PROCLAIMING GOD S WORD Elder Carol Steen Anthem I Will Come to You, You are Mine David Haas, 1991 I will come to you in the silence; I will lift you from all your fear. You will hear my voice; I claim you as my choice. Be still and know I am here. Do not be afraid, I am with you. I have called you each by name. Come and follow me, I will bring you home; I love you and you are mine. I am hope for all who are hopeless; I am eyes for all who long to see. In the shadows of the night, I will be your light. Come and rest in me. I am strength for all the despairing, healing for the ones who dwell in shame. All the blind will see; the lame will all run free, and all will know my name. I am the Word that leads all to freedom; I am the peace the world cannot give. I will call your name, embracing all your pain. Stand up, now walk and live!

: The church confesses the Scriptures to be the Word of God written, witnessing to God s selfrevelation. Where that Word is read and proclaimed, Jesus Christ the Living Word is present by the inward witness of the Holy Spirit. For this reason the reading, hearing, preaching, and confessing of the Word are central to Christian worship. Unison Prayer for Illumination (Portions taken from Hymn # 405) Praise God for this holy ground, place and people, sight and sound. Praise God in whose word we find food for body, soul and mind. Praise God who through Christ makes known all are loved and called God s own. Praise God s Spirit who befriends, raises, humbles, breaks, and mends. Praise God for words that are spoken and are felt, shaping and mending us heartfelt. Amen. Amen. *The Affirmation of Faith: The Apostles Creed I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

In worship the church is transformed and renewed, equipped and sent to serve God s reign in the world.
