Third Sunday in Ordinary Time January 21, 2018 ROSARY AND ADORATION MONDAY, JANUARY 22ND AT 7:00PM January 22nd marks the 45th anniversary of the Roe v. Wade ruling that legalized abortion in the United States. In reparation for the grave sin of abortion our parish encourages everyone to attend the rosary and adoration on this evening. Any country that accepts abortion is the poorest of the poor. Saint Teresa of Calcutta Feast of the Presentation of the Lord On Friday, February 2nd our parish will celebrate the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord with a bilingual Mass at 6:00pm. This feast occurs forty days after the birth of Jesus and is also known as Candlemas day, since the blessing of candles in included in the liturgy. Parishioners are asked to bring any candles from home that they will use this year so they that they would like to be blessed. Following Mass we will have a gathering in the parish center for food and fellowship. Those parishioners who attended the Epiphany Celebration and received a baby in their slice of King Cake are reminded to bring a dish to share with everyone! (Reminder phone calls will go out soon). All are welcome! For more information call the church office at 229-244-2430. LENTEN FAITH SHARING GROUPS Lent begins this year on February 14th. The Stewardship Committee is once again coordinating small Lenten Faith Sharing Groups. We are using a new program called Living the Eucharist. This program encourages spiritual renewal and growth and focuses on renewing our commitment to live life more fully as missionary disciples of Jesus. There are various days and times available to meet your schedule. Please stop by the sign-up tables in the vestibule for more information or contact Lee Crosby at 229-251-6628 (cell) or 229-242-6956 (home). 3

NEWMAN CENTER LINE OF CREDIT BALANCE $25,020.00 Diocesan loan balance $23,912.97 January Payment Principal $108,609.93 Interest $ 485.76 $109,095.69 In August, 2017, St. John sold the old Newman Center property on Baytree Rd. The proceeds from that sale were $174, 980.00. These proceeds were applied to original line of credit of $200,00.00 which was used to purchase the new Newman Center property on Oak St. We will begin paying down this line of credit when the Diocesan Loan is paid in full. (This balance is in addition to the regular Diocesan loan). ST FRANCIS CENTER 2nd Quarter Report To love God and neighbor is not something abstract but profoundly concrete: it means seeing in every person the face of Christ to be served and to serve him concretely. (Pope Francis) This 2 nd Quarter report (reflected on the next page) demonstrates how YOU, through your gift of Time, Talent and Treasure and donations of food, clothes and other items, have concretely put LOVE INTO ACTION. As you can see our parishioners were very generous which enabled us to assist many people and organizations: Catko Distributors donated 6 cases of paper products, Religious Ed students from St. John and Moody Air Force Base collected hygiene items. Eight graders packed 180 bags with paper products and hygiene items. Five adult volunteers delivered these gift bags to Azalea Towers, Ashley House and Behavioral Health (Midtown residents). Walmart Cards from the Giving Tree provided assistance for: 40 families (1-7 members) toys for children for the Feast of the Epiphany meals and blankets for the Homeless food and toiletries for The Haven, Horizon Shelter, Shelter Plus and Migrant Farm Clinic Thank you for your generosity and support and may you be blessed abundantly in 2018 and beyond! As often as you did it to one of the least of My brothers and sisters, you did it to Me. (Matthew 25:40) Peace and Joy! Sr Nuala 4

Men, Women and the Mystery of Love Practical Insights from St. John Paul, II s Love and Responsibility (Edward Sri) Edward Sri s cliff-notes version of Love and Responsibility seeks to explain how truly fulfilling romantic relationships are created and nurtured. Its central point is the personalist principle which states that a person must not be merely the means to an end for another person (9). The entire book develops around this one notion, which surprisingly informs all aspects of male-female interactions. Father Karol Wojtyła (St. John Paul, II), through Sri, tackles the subjects of friendship, sexual desire, emotional attraction, chastity, contraception, and more in his explanation of how humans were created to relate to each other. www.foryourmarriage.org 6
