2 0 1 8 Y EA R IN REV IEW Emunah - working to improve the lives of the people in Israel, one child, one family at a time. W HAT A YEAR! PURIM SPIEL CHESED DAY To say it was a big year for Emunah Australia would be quite the understatement. Receiving t ax deduct ibilit y st at us was undoubtedly the most significant achievement, but with this came an impetus to revive Emunah, get the younger generat ion involved and let them see the incredible work the organisation does in Israel. Let's have a look at some of the highlights of this big year! Star Drek was a triumph of the stage and the spirit. The spiel is an incredible Melbourne institution, an inclusive creative endeavour for the Jewish community that is without peer. On top of that, the Spiel was a financial success for Emunah. An amazing achievement for all involved. The inaugural Emunah Australia Chesed Day was held at Pesach time, and what a day it was! A full busload of excited Aussies hit the road for a day of fun and chesed. A rewarding time for all involved as we spent time at the Afula Children's Center. Memories were made and insipration was received. Everyone who travels to Israel should experience a day like this! SDEROT EM ERGENCY APPEAL Ella Leibler receiving a certificate in honour of her Bat Mitzvah from Emunah Co-President Debbie Nossbaum When things heat up in Israel's South, it is Emunah that is there helping the residents deal with the trauma. Emunah Australia's recent fundraising appeal for the Emunah Family Crisis and Counselling Center in Sderot, received tremendous support. We are pleased that we were able to send $11,000 to Israel for the funding of an extra therapist at the Center to help with the long waiting lists there. THE JEW ISH HOLIDAYS Emunah marks all the big moments in the year - Purim Cards start us off, followed soon after by Pesach Kits. Great fundraising initiatives that are useful too! And of course, the mighty Emunah Wall Calendar - how would Melbournians survive without it? This year we've gone hi-tech and added an online version too!
HIGH SCHOOLERS LEADING THE WAY COMMUNAL EVENTS We are blessed that the youth of our community are incredibly motivated to do acts of kindness. After the Chesed Day in the Afula Children's Centre in Israel, a number of the Yavneh students who attended wanted to do something to help. They started a fundraising campaign to raise money for shoes for the children in Afula. This campaign will continue next year. It was a fun-filled year with some great functions in both Melbourne and Sydney. Sydney kicked off with an awesome 'Israel at 70' Party, followed by a successful Trivia Night and an inspirational Melbourne Cup Function. Melbourne enjoyed a ripper Comedy Night, and a mother and daughter Karaoke Dance Party. Moriah College students ran a Tzedaka drive, where they collected school supplies and made up 50 pencil case packs for the children at Afula. Local businesses also assisted in the collection. The packs were taken to Israel in July were they were eagerly accepted by the children who normally don't receive such goodies. Emunah was also to be found at the MDA Unity Day, and combined with CCare to pack boxes of food for Mitzvah Day. And of course, the Emunah Summer Series of Shiurim continued in both Melbourne and Sydney. 2019 EVENTS ALREADY IN THE W ORKS... Second Chesed Day in Israel - Jan 2019 Celebrat ing Israel BBQ (SYD) The first was such a success, by popular demand we have a January instalment. Will there be another at Pesach time? Let us know if you want one! Purim Spiel 'The Handmaid's Tallis' (MEL) Yom Ha'at zmaut Luncheon (MEL) and many more to come... EM UNAH.ORG.AU INFO@EM UNAH.ORG.AU
