Through Baptism You have sent me to continue the mission of Jesus by sharing my love with others. Strengthen me to respond to Your call each day. Help me to become all You desire of me. Inspire me to make a difference in others' lives. Lead me to choose the way of life You have planned for me. Open the hearts of all to listen to Your call. Fill all with Your Holy Spirit that we may have listening hearts and the courage to respond to You. Enkindle in my heart and the hearts of others the desire to make the world a better place by serving as Lay Minister, Sister, Priest, Brother or Deacon. Kevin Van Hoomissen Sisters Appreciation Brunch A Saint Junipero Serra Blessing The sun was shining and the Double Tree Hotel was filled with joy and the love of Christ & Saint Junipero Serra, as the Portland Serra Club hosted over 90 people at the Annual Kevin Van Hoomissen Sisters Appreciation Brunch on September 27. Sisters throughout the Portland Archdiocese were invited with 53 sisters from 13 different orders attending. There were over 90 attending the event in all including special guests: Mary Jo Tully, Portland Archdiocese Chancellor; Father John Henderson, Chaplain of the new Tualatin Valley Serra Club & Pastor at St Anthony Parish; members of the new Tualatin Valley Serra Club; the Van Hoomissen family, and several guests of Portland Serrans. The event began with a social hour, including wine & appetizers, allowing time for comradeship with Arletta O Hearn (from St Pius Parish) providing all with her talent at the piano, and concluded with a special brunch and a few words of thanks to all the Sisters for what they do for Christ and the good of the Church Seeing all of the sisters gathered together, conversing with each other, and reflecting joy of the occasion is a blessing for all to see. The event not only recognizes the Sisters for the essential work they do, but also gives the Sisters a chance to meet others they may not have seen during their busy yearly schedules. For example, this year, Serrans reached out to Sister Dorothy Radoli, belonging to Sisters of Kakamega, and who is from St John Fisher and relatively new to the area to attend the event. She was elated to be invited and meet other sisters whom she had not previously had the opportunity to meet. As this yearly Serran Affirmation Event not only shows our appreciation to the religious for what they do, it is also an occasion to highlight and promote the call to religious vocations throughout our community. Hopefully, some of those attending or those in our families or parishes who personally experienced or had opportunity to hear of this event will be moved to discern the call to religious life. Finally, we hope those who were not able to attend this year, and all those who attended, will mark their calendar and save the date to attend next year - SAVE THE DATE: September 25, 2016. We owe a special thanks to all Serrans who attended, and those who couldn t attend but made contributions, for making this program such a success. Saint Junipero Serra - Pray for Us! Paul Harris, President Amen.

Serra Club of Portland Bulletin Page 2 P R O G R A M R E C A P S August 19 - Paul and Monique Harris, the Northwest Regional Couple for Teams of Our Lady, gave a presentation on their marriage ministry. Teams is a movement of Catholic married couples, encouraging all to fully live the sacrament of marriage, deepen their conjugal spirituality and live Christcentered family lives. MARK YOUR CALENDARS SERRA MEETINGS Each Team consists of 5-7 couples who meet once a month to share a simple meal, personal highs and lows of the month, a time of prayer (including a Gospel reading, prayer on the reading, prayer intentions, and a liturgical Psalm reading) and discussion of a monthly spiritual topic. Teams provide the nest and the fertile ground from which religious vocations can grow and be nourished. Teams of Our Lady began in France in 1947, founded by Father Caffarel, and has spread to more than 65 countries and is recognized by the Vatican, under the Pontifical Council for the Laity. Teams is blossoming in the Portland area and beyond with over 20 Teams forming in the last few years. For more information contact: Paul & Monique Harris (503-657-4614) or www.teamsofourlady.org Sept 16 - Tom Stein, a former President of the Portland Serra Club, has spent forty years of his life in ministry. He has served the youth in the Baker, Yakima and Portland Dioceses. He has helped the Haitian Project to bring Catholic education to the children of Port Au Prince, Haiti. Currently he is the CEO of BonZeb, which is an organization dedicated to converting elephant grass to charcoal for the energy needs of the people of Haiti. It also increases their employment opportunities. BonZeb in the Haitian Creole dialect means good grass. Through this nonprofit entity Tom is seeking to employ and use the Haitian people to grow grass and convert it into charcoal as an alternative to eliminating trees in their environment. Elephant grass is a readily renewable resource and this will lessen the negative impacts on the Haitian environment. It will also employ many people to produce a badly needed alternative energy product. Eighty per cent of the Haitian people are unemployed. Currently labor in Haiti is generally paid at the rate of $3.60 per day and charcoal is sold for $1.85 per pound. Ninety-eight per cent of the island is deforested. It is estimated that they have about five years of trees left for 30 million people to produce charcoal for their energy needs. About forty per cent of Haitians use charcoal for energy. Making charcoal from grass will save the trees and enable reforestation, and it will also be helpful for the topsoil which is currently eroding away. BonZeb s goal is to create an active, flourishing industry for the Haitian people in making charcoal for their use. BonZeb will work to have adequate placement of water which will reduce the day-long chore of finding and carrying water back to their families for their survival. This will change their traditional reliance on trees. As the trees are saved, it will enhance the value of the land on the island and reduce the ill effects on health from the current dependence on trees. Portland Serrans Jim & Terry O Hanlon and Dan & Lynn Jones along with our Chaplain, Fr. Jeff Eirvin, had the honor of being there. Tickets were limited and we each had different access to see the Pope - but just being there was awesome! About 90 Serrans braved hours in long lines in the hot mid-day sun to join the approximately 25,000 faithful in attendance at this magnificent event. "Junípero Serra always went forward because Christ was waiting," His Holiness said in the conclusion of his homily at the canonization Mass. "He always went forward because his brothers and sisters were waiting. He always went forward until the end of his life. Like Saint Junípero Serra, may we always go forward. They say a picture is worth a thousand words, so we ll share photos taken at this blessed event by Lynn Jones & Father Jeff Eirvin.
