It s not that I don t know, but rather it is what I call a vector check to ensure I have not been derailed as to where and what I should be doing. Just like any organization or religious movement one needs to ensure that they are on track. If not attended to, very often people and movements can easily go astray from their core values and mission area and in the end not be near where they should or were intended to be. I believe we all need to go back on occasion and relook our individual vocations and missions to ensure that we have not lost course. Recently this past month, I had time to reflect on my married vocation and a mission I have to promote the sanctity of marriage and the love of Christ and how each of those complements my passion to promote and affirm the call to religious vocations and the consecrated life. What I was again reminded of was that the life of priests and religious and married couples are naturally linked. Each vocation is a gift of God. We cannot be faithful in either without Christ s help. Each of us is based on a self-sacrificing love that is greater than self. The individual is not as important as the couple or church (man and wife or priest and church). We are called to help our spouse (i.e. others) to holiness, not necessarily ourselves. Priests and all of our religious represent an ideal model of married life individuals totally dedicated to the love of Christ and His Church; individuals exuding love in all they do and in all they are; and individuals willing to sacrifice their all for others. It is only natural that I cherish all our religious as in who they are and what they do as they are my married couple role models. As such, I can only aspire that more men and women fully discern and respond to that special calling to the priesthood, religious, and consecrated life. We certainly need more religious throughout our respective communities to help draw all closer to Christ in all we do. Mary, Mother of Vocations, Pray for Us! 2 Pag e 2 PROGRAM RECAPS July 1, 2015 Special Charter Day 78th Anniversary Celebration NEW MEMBER INDUCTION - 10 Year Pins Awarded New Members were inducted at our celebration of our Charter Day. July 15, Father John Kerns, the pastor at Our Lady of the Lake Parish, began his presentation by indicating that evangelization is Jesus plan. Father Kerns related that the American bishops have set three goals: (1) evangelize ourselves bring about an enthusiasm for our faith that we can share with others; (2) invite all people in the U.S. to hear the message of salvation in Jesus Christ so they may come to join us in the fullness of the Catholic faith; (3) and foster gospel values in our society, promoting the dignity of the human person, the importance of the family, and the common good of our society, so that our nation may continue to be transformed by the saving power of Jesus Christ. Father Kerns related the four strategies of evangelization as presented by Matthew Kelly in his book, Rediscover Catholicism. The strategies include: (1) develop friendships with those who are not of our faith, or are not active in our faith; (2) pray for these people; fast for them; make them the focus of your spiritual exercise; (3) when appropriate, share the story of your own faith and the ways in which God has touched your heart. Talk about the gift of your parish and what it means to you. This kind of conversation can only come up after the development of a friendship where someone is open to knowing more about your personal life. (4) Invite people to parish outreach opportunities. Your parish has events, besides, to which anyone can come, such as evening recollection, parish mission, small group gatherings, self-improvement seminars, etc. In Sherry Weddell s book, Forming Intentional Disciples, the five thresholds of conversion are as follows: 1. Trust a person is able to trust or has a positive association with Jesus. Without some kind of bridge of trust, people will not move closer to God. 2. Spiritual Curiosity a person finds himself intrigued by or desiring to know more about Jesus, his life, and his teachings. 3. Spiritual openness a person acknowledges to himself or herself and to God that he or she is open to the possibility of personal or spiritual change. 4. Spiritual seeking the person moves from being essentially passive to actively seeking to know the God who is calling him or her. 5. Intentional discipleship the person makes a conscious commitment to follow Jesus and to reorder one s life accordingly.

3 Serra Club of Portland Bulletin Page 3 P R O G R A M RECAPS Aug 5, Heidi Franklin is a lay spiritual director for the exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola. She gave a brief summary of the life of St. Ignatius and then honed in on the spiritual exercises that St. Ignatius developed and became the basis for Jesuit spirituality. St. Ignatius was a lay person when he developed these exercises. Later he petitioned Rome to accept what eventually became the basis for the spirituality of the Jesuit order of priests. St. Ignatius developed an excellent discernment process. The exercises help develop a dialogue with and a listening to God which builds a relationship. SEEL (Spiritual Exercises in Everyday Life) is a nine month prayer-retreat. Those involved pray for one hour each day for nine months. They meet with their spiritual advisor once per month for an hour. The retreatants are invited to encounter the living God and God s presence in creation, their personal life stories and current life circumstances. Those who make the The Spiritual Exercises are diverse in age, gender, ethnicity and Christian perspective. SEEL is best suited for people who wish to enter into a deeper relationship with God and who have established a discipline of personal prayer. Participants are expected to pray for an hour a day, meet with a spiritual director regularly and meet one Saturday morning a month for a three hour mini-retreat with the other participants. The spiritual directors are men and women who have made the spiritual exercises themselves and have been prepared to walk with others in this experience. He focused on how to increase membership, the new book HUNDREDFOLD (a guide to Parish Vocation Ministry) and what the Omaha, Nebraska area is doing to continue development of vocation awareness and Serra membership. 4 Pag e 4 FIRST ANNUAL DEACON APPRECIATION GROTTO MASS & LUNCHEON The Portland Serra Club hosted it s first Permanent Deacon Appreciation Lunch in conjunction with our annual Grotto on Sunday, July 20th. After mass, there was a lovely brunch served honoring the Deacons and their wives. It was a wonderful success with about 75 attendees including Deacons, wives, Serrans and friends of Serrans! This should prove to be an annual event Deacons and their wives will look forward to attend! 5 Pag e 5 SERRA INTERNATIONAL CONVENTION MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA July 30 - August 2, 2015 Serra International held its 73rd convention in Melbourne, Australia. Dan and Lynn Jones attended this convention where Dan was installed as VP of Communications for the Serra International Board and in that capacity he will serve on the SI Executive Committee. Congratulations Dan! The convention was held at the Catholic Leadership Centre which was a beautiful all-inclusive facility. The hositality was warm and welcoming!! The theme was Christ, the Light of the World and the event began Thursday with an SI Board meeting then a Vocations Panel with Father Brendan Lane and seminarians from Corpus Christi College. The dialogue was open and insighful discernment journeys were shared. The discussion was followed by opening and a welcome dinner. Friday morning opened with and a retreat with Fr. Hyde followed by a Foundation Awards luncheon. Afternoon speakers included Bishop Gerad Hanna on Proclaiming Christ in a Secular Society. After noon tea, SI Outgoing President, Dan Grady, gave an update on The State of Serra. Saturday morning was the Delegates meeting followed by morning tea. Afternoon speakers included, Bishop Michael Kennedy on Developing our Charisms for the building up of the Church followed by keynote speaker, Father Morgan Batt, Vocation The Light of Christ. After noon tea, SI Executive Director, John Liston, shared an update on Serra and the Tools of Modern Age followed by and then ending with the Convention banquet with Host Archbishop, Denis Hart, speaking. Australia was a beautiful country and the convention was insightful and delightful.
