Ashe Masses: Saturday: 5:15 pm Sunday: 8:00 am, 9:15 am, 11:30 am Confessions: Saturday 4:30 to 5:00 PM Marriages: This great sacrament of vocation is a joyous time, but also a time of very serious spiritual preparation. The responsibility assumed by the couple and the Church is significant. While many focus on the day of the wedding, we seek to prepare for the second day and beyond. The Bishops of NJ have adopted a policy to assist in this preparation. Attendance at Engaged Encounter, Pre-Cana, or another approved marriage prep program, and individual sessions with a priest or deacon are required of all couples. Couples should contact the Rectory one year in advance of the intended marriage, and before finalizing other detail particularly reception facilities. Baptisms: The Church shares the joy of families in the birth of children, and, with their parents takes seriously the responsibility of bringing them up in the faith. Parents seeking baptism for their children are to attend Baptismal Prep Class. This can be arranged by calling the parish office. Parents should be registered members of the parish. Godparents, those who represent the church in the life of the child, must be practicing Catholics, if they are married, they must have been married in the Church, practice the faith regularly, and must obtain a sponsor certificate from their home parish. Please choose Godparents with these criteria in mind. Anointing of the Sick: This sacrament is given for those facing serious illness or surgery, and for those of advanced years. If you or a family member is planning to enter the hospital, please see one of the priests following Mass or call the rectory if you would like to receive this sacrament. Funerals: Please call the Rectory.

From Father Doug: The Act of Contrition.. The kids know it, or at least they have memorized it, or something close to it. Oh my God I am hardly sorry. Well it s the thought that counts. Some of you have asked why it was changed. Some of you come to confession and the priest, or at least this priest may have asked you to say it. That s not to put you on the spot. I know the words are sometimes different. In most confessionals it s printed on a card so you can read along. That wouldn t work here. You can t see in there. It s not a real big deal not to know it word for word. But it is something you should be able to say in a pinch, when you might be tempted to sin, or even, well, right after you have cursed a blue streak as my grandmother said at another New Jersey driver. This raises the bigger question of confession. I noticed on the surveys that many people think it s important to have confessions at convenient times. But from the responses, it appeared that confessions should be scheduled for other people. The Sacrament of Reconciliation should be offered, our survey said, but then it wasn t as important to people personally, so we will offer confessions for all the people we think should go to confession. But maybe someone else thinks that we should go. Well, I think we all should go. It is a gift offered by Christ through the Church. Our Blessed Lord gave the power of the keys to the Apostles, Matthew 16:19. I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven." Many people say they can just confess their sins to God. That s true, but absolution, the sacramental forgives of sins can only be given by the Church validly ordained priest, as instituted by the Lord. I am sure there is nothing you could say that would shock us, and we can t see you anyway, unless you ask to make your confession face to face. Most places offer the choice, we don t. At our Penance Service for Advent you will be given the choice. December 16 at 7:30 we have a communal penance service. Some brief readings, examination of conscience, act of contrition said together, and individual confession to a priest and you are done. Parents, particularly those with children preparing for 1 st penance, it would be a good example to set, to come together to this liturgy. So for forgiveness to be real we need genuine sorrow for our sin (contrition) and desire to change (purpose of amendment), and a desire to make restitution, or make up for what we have lost by our sin. For the record, the Act of Contrition that is currently taught has all these elements. Anyone you might want to use sill also do the same. So here it is, and bring it with you to confession to say with your penance, or at the penance liturgy on the 16 th. O my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended You, and I detest all my sins because of Your just punishments, but most of all because they offend You, my God, Who are all-good and deserving of all my love. I firmly resolve, with the help of Your grace, to sin no more and to avoid the near occasion of sin. DEVOTIONS AT SACRED HEART CHURCH The Rosary prayed Monday-Saturday in Church at 8:00 AM The Divine Mercy prayed Monday (exclude. Tuesday) through Saturday at 9:00 AM Prayer Group meets on Tuesdays at 9:00 AM in the Parish Hall Miraculous Medal Novena prayed on Monday after the 8:30 AM Mass Eucharistic Adoration after the 8:30 AM Mass on the first Friday of the Month ADVENT PENANCE LITURGY SACRED HEART CHURCH WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 5TH 7:00 PM In anticipation of the Solemn Festival of Christmas, the faithful are encouraged to make use of the Sacrament of Penance. On December 5, 2018 at 7:00 pm there will be a Penance Service at Sacred Heart Church for the people of BOTH of our Parishes. There will be a brief time of prayer and then opportunity for individual confessions with several priests.

OUR LORD, CHRIST THE KING NOVEMBER 25th, 2018 CHRIST IS KING On the final Sunday of the liturgical year we celebrate the feast of Christ the King. It s easy to understand today s scriptures as events that happened long ago and far away, or predictions that will come true somewhere, some day. But they invite us to claim Christ as our King here and now. Jesus words to Pilate in the Gospel remind us that his kingdom transcends time and place. And the prophecies from Daniel and Revelation give us reason to be faithful to Christ our King right here and right now. By concluding the year with this feast we are proclaiming our faith that Jesus Christ is the one and only King over all seasons, all peoples, and all of creation. No matter what nation we belong to or what language we speak, he has made us into a kingdom (Revelation 1:6) one people united in love and peace for all eternity. TODAY S READINGS First Reading One like a Son of man received dominion, glory, and kingship (Daniel 7:13-14). Psalm The Lord is king; he is robed in majesty (Psalm 93). Second Reading Jesus Christ is the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead (Revelation 1:5-8). Gospel For this I came into the world, to testify to the truth (John 18:33b-37). ORIGINALITY Remember that God prefers the poverty of our hearts to the most sublime thoughts borrowed from others. St. Peter Julian Eymard SAINTS AND SPECIAL OBSERVANCES Sunday: Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe Monday: Thirty-fourth Week in Ordinary Time Friday: St. Andrew Saturday: Blessed Virgin Mary; First Saturday
