Did you need to pinch yourself awake during the first few lines of this Sunday's Gospel? John the Baptist received quite a prelude today as Luke described the religious and political leadership of the time period. Scripture is divinely inspired, and we believe that everything that made it into the Bible is there for a reason. These lines remind us of an important truth. The Christmas story isn't a fairy tale or nursery rhyme. It's not a parable we say to give meaning to the holiday. At Christmas, God's presence is made tangible in a precise moment in time. The birth of Christ is a historical event. As precursor to Jesus' preaching, the ministry of John the Baptist is also a historical event. "Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight his paths." John's call to repentance and the forgiveness of sins happened in a particular time and place. But that does not mean it is limited to first century Palestine! God continues to move in our daily lives. What we hear in today's Gospel - and what we anticipate at Christmas - occurs in our daily lives. God works in concrete ways in time and space. He did that 2,000 years ago, and He continues to do so today! This Sunday, examine your own Christmas preparations. Is there anything you need to repent of before the Christmas season? Are there low points in your life, valleys to "be filled" by the love of God? Are there mountainous obstacles in your spiritual life? How can they be "made low"? Are you making decisions that have moved you away from God? This Advent season is the time for them to "be made straight and made smooth." Prepare the way in your heart for Christ today!

SECOND COLLECTIONS In the envelope packets (and as a choice in direct giving options) there are envelopes for special collections. If you wish to donate to these special appeals, please place those specific envelopes in the basket as it is passed for the regular collection. They are counted separately and directed to the cause for which they were intended. In this way, you have the opportunity to choose to contribute to these special appeals if you wish. Unless announced before Mass, second collections will not be taken up during Mass. Some find that multiple collections during the Eucharist are distracting and unduly lengthen the Mass. CHRISTMAS CONFESSIONS Because Christmas falls so close to a weekend some changes were necessary in the confession schedule. Below are listed the many opportunities to receive this sacrament before Christmas. Please note in particular that on Tuesday, December 11 th there will be three priests hearing confessions from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. (a previously scheduled music event takes place in church at 7:00 p.m.) and on Tuesday, December 18 th there will be three priests hearing confessions from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Neither of these times include a Penance Service, just an opportunity for confession. Sat., Dec. 1, 12:00-12:30 and Sat., Dec. 8, 12:00-12:30 and Tues., Dec. 11, 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Sat., Dec. 15, 12:00 to 1:00 and Tues., Dec. 18, 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Sat., Dec. 22, 12:00-1:00 and Saint Kilian Sat., Dec. 1, 3:00-3:30 Sat., Dec. 8, 3:00-3:30 Tues., Dec. 11, 4:00 p.m.-7:00 p.m. Sat., Dec. 15 2:30-3:30 Wed, Dec. 19 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Sat., Dec. 22, 2:30-3:30 GIVING TREE PROJECT Once again the Giving Tree Project was a huge success! Approximately 700 gifts were distributed to various facilities around the area! Thank you to all who were generous with gifts and monetary donations towards gifts. Also, thank you to all who helped with their time and talents: cutting out tags, dressing trees, sorting, gathering, and delivering gifts. This was a wonderful way to start the Christmas season! For the complete month s schedule, visit our website: http://www.holysepulcher.org/ministries/liturgicalministries Prepare the Way of the Lord This Second Sunday of Advent we hear the call in the Gospel to Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight his paths. Every valley shall be filled and every mountain and hill shall be made low. This is a vivid reminder that, as God desires to be with us, so must we work to prepare our hearts and our lives to be places where he desires to dwell and that are fitting for his coming. While this preparation can take on many forms, Saint Luke reminds us of one important way, repentance for the forgiveness of sins. As Catholics, we repent of our sins and are forgiveness in the Sacrament of Reconciliation, and Advent, the season of preparation, is a perfect time to celebrate this beautiful sacrament and ready our hearts for the coming of the Lord. This Tuesday, December 11 th, The Light Is On For You! at parishes across the Diocese of Pittsburgh from 6:00-9:00pm and priests will be available to hear Confessions. No matter how long it has been since you last went, consider taking this opportunity to prepare your heart this Advent.

PAGE 4 WHAT IS THE BRIDGE PAGE? The Bridge Page is intended to be a weekly insert in the bulletins of both Saint Kilian and Parishes. The symbol on the mast head is the bridge. Bridges are how communities connect, communicate and collaborate. Our parishes are two distinct civil and canonical entities (symbolized by the bell towers of both churches as the bridge supports). But we are united in the same Diocesan grouping and our common commitment to Christ. The contents of The Bridge Page will be items of interest to parishioners of both parishes. This is necessary because those who do the decorating are part of the parish maintenance staff or are other parishioners. If the weather turns unfavorable, their first responsibility is the safety of the parish property, visitors or their families. That means that in the event of prolonged snow events, decorations may not go up by Christmas. In addition, all the manger figures are in place early because they represent why Christmas is celebrated. We all need that reminder in the very busy weeks as we approach Christ. CHRISTMAS MASS SCHEDULE: Below you will find the schedule for Christmas Masses in both parishes of the grouping. This schedule was composed in view of last year s Christmas Mass Schedule in both parishes as well as reflecting the usual times for Sunday Masses. Monday, December 24th Christmas Eve CHRISTMAS CONFESSIONS: Because Christmas this year falls so close to a weekend, some changes were necessary in the confession schedule. Prophets interpret the signs of the time in history. True religious prophets speak from God s point of view about events, but people in every age have the work of discerning which prophets speak faithfully about what God asks of us. Jeremiah: First prophet to ridicule the idols that people worshiped instead of God. Baruch: Wrote Jeremiah s speeches onto scrolls and read them to the people in the Temple. Zephaniah: Tells that people who are poor will become God s remnant, or chosen people. Micah: Looks forward to the day when a descendant of David will lead the People of Israel with peace and justice. We invite you to the Christmas Musical, A Special Delivery, on Friday, December 14, 7:00pm in the Church. The children in CCD and Home Schooling are studying the prophets to discover what they have to say to children today and who are the prophets in their lives. It will lead the children to the greatest prophet, Jesus. Do we have prophets today who speak and lead faithfully about what God asks of us? Do we during this time of waiting need to take a look at what our society is saying to us about God s place in our lives and do we really recognize that He is our best hope even in time of injustice? May we spend these holy days together in prayer, penance, and hope, fixing our eyes on the appearance of Christ our Savior and longing for his deliverance with joy.
