Knight Times Monthly Newsletter of the Great 799 November 2013 Volume 110, Issue 11 Dallas Council 799 Knights of Columbus 10110 Shoreview Road Dallas, Texas 75238 Chaplain s Message By Fr. Josef Vollmer-König Dear Brother Knights, The month of November is a month of remembrances, All Saints, All Souls and Veterans Day. Who are the saints we celebrate? The Catechism of the Catholic Church explains a Saint is The holy one who leads a life in union with God through the grace of Christ and receives the reward of eternal life. All of us are called to be saints. The Church, throughout its history, has declared members of the faithful saints, for example, Mary the Mother of Our Lord and the Apostles. We call on them as intercessors. There are many unnamed saints. Children at baptism are without sin. They are incapable of committing sin. Should they die, they are in the presence of God, and therefore are saints. Many faithful who are never canonized, who lived their lives in union with God are saints. I am sure all of us can remember such a person. In the Creed, we declare we believe in the communion of saints. We, through our baptism, belong to this communion. Therefore, we celebrate the Saints the Church set before us as role models and intercessors. We celebrate the Saints who have been part of our lives, our parents, grandparents, a member of our family, or a friend. We celebrate what we are called to be. Pope John Paul II tells us, Let us look at the saints who are valiant witnesses of fidelity to Christ; let us be inspired by their example in climbing the mountain of holiness. Be Saints! This as you well know- is every believers calling. On the day following the feast of All Saints, we celebrate All Souls Day by remembering all our family and friends that have gone before us. On November 11, we remember our Veterans for their service to this country. Let us remember one another in Prayer. We remember all our brothers and Sisters in God s family. We all call Him our Father. Blessings, Fr. Josef Month at a Glance This Month Nov 1 (Fri): All Saints Day, Holy Day of Obligation Nov 2 (Sat): Daylight Savings Time Ends: FALL BACK Nov 5 (Tue): Monthly General Meeting Nov 9 (Sat): [SOTX] Over the Edge Event-Fundraiser Nov 9 (Sat): Christ the King Crusader 5K & 1 Mile Walk/Run Nov 10 (Sun): 8am Memorial Mass, St. Patrick s Nov 10 (Sun): Boys Knight Out; Cowboys at Saints; 7:30pm Nov 11 (Mon): Veteran s Day Nov 14-17: Men s ACTS Retreat Nov 17 (Sun): Major Degree (KC799); meet at 7:30 mass at St. Thomas Nov 19 (Tue): KC799 Board Meeting Nov 28 (Thur): Thanksgiving Day Looking Ahead Dec 3 (Tue): Monthly General Meeting Open meeting, awards banquet, Christmas party at 7:00. For These We Pray Please pray for our members and their family members with chronic or serious ailments, as well as the souls of our departed Brothers. Prayer List Pope Francis Most Reverend Jimmy Charles Grahmann Schnurr RC DeMoss Chris Matera Stanley Vrla Becky Kelly Harry Charles Diehl, 93, of Dallas, Texas passed away peacefully on October 18, 2013 after a short illness. His son, Harry, Jr. is a member of Council 799. Harry Sr. served in the Army Air Force during World War II and married Irene in 1942. Irene and Harry raised 4 children. He was active in bowling, church activities, and watching grandchildren's sports events. If you know of deaths or major illnesses of Knights or their family members, please contact: Frank Gray, (214) 328-4935 Or prayers@kc799.org Grand Knight s Letter Greetings to my Brother Knights, By Mike Hill We are in the home stretch of 2013 and The Great 799 continues to perform charitable work in the community! October service was memorable on several fronts. Not surprising was your efforts on the Pro Life front with the annual Hike for Life. David Holder and his crew put on another fabulous event that raised over $22,000 for a very worthy cause. The very next weekend, 799 participated in the guarding of the statue of Our Lady of San Juan on a Friday, built a wheelchair ramp for an injured brother on Saturday and painted the sleeping quarters of Fire Station 31 on Sunday. Whew! To close the month, we had a little family time with the kids Halloween Trunk or Treat. The lower parking lot of 799 saw its fair share of little ghouls and goblins and plenty of spooky cars decorated too. Thank you Billy and Jenna Lepak for chairing this event, and Herb Brady and his grill crew for the food, and Jim Bong for the festive music. Looking ahead to the end of the year, make plans to attend the December Open Meeting/Christmas Party. This year s event will once again be on our regular first Tuesday meeting night, December 3, in the upper hall. The evening will begin at 6:30 p.m. See the article in this newsletter for more details. Again, I can t thank the members of this council and their families enough for all you do to make 799 the premier council in DFW that it is. Here s wishing all of you a blessed and joyous Thanksgiving with family and friends.
