March 25, 2018 AS WE GATHER Palms and passion hardly seem to fit together but in Jesus they do. The palms welcomed Jesus to the triumph of suffering that paid the full price of our sin, and the hosannas cried out to Him who exchanged His life for death that we might live. There are no palms and hosannas that do not end in the cross, and there is no passion that does not lead us to faith and to rejoice in what His suffering accomplished. Our Lord came to the cross not as an unwilling victim but as the One who alone surrendered His life into death. We do not come to the Lord under coercion or as people compelled but at the bidding of the Gospel and by the power of the Holy Spirit! Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord. DIVINE SERVICE: 3 LSB #184 OPENING HYMN All Glory, Laud, and Honor #442 CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION Introit for The Sunday of the Passion P. Blessèd is he who comes in the name of the LORD! C. We bless you from the house of the LORD. P. Lift up your heads, O gates! And be lifted up, O ancient doors, that the King of glory may come in. C. Who is this King of glory?

P. The LORD, strong and mighty, the LORD, mighty in battle! Lift up your heads, O gates! And lift them up, O ancient doors, that the King of glory may come in. C. Who is this King of glory?* P. The LORD of hosts, he is the King of glory! C. Blessèd is he who comes in the name of the LORD! We bless you from the house of the LORD. KYRIE SALUTATION Pastor: The Lord be with you. People: And with thy spirit PRAYER OF THE DAY Pastor: Let us pray, Almighty and everlasting God, You sent Your Son, our Savior Jesus Christ, to take upon Himself our flesh and to suffer death upon the cross. Mercifully grant that we may follow the example of His great humility and patience and be made partakers of His resurrection; through the same Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. People: Amen.

FIRST READING Zechariah 9:9 12 9Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem! behold, your king is coming to you; righteous and having salvation is he, humble and mounted on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey. 10I will cut off the chariot from Ephraim and the war horse from Jerusalem; and the battle bow shall be cut off, and he shall speak peace to the nations; his rule shall be from sea to sea, and from the River to the ends of the earth. 11As for you also, because of the blood of my covenant with you, I will set your prisoners free from the waterless pit. 12Return to your stronghold, O prisoners of hope; today I declare that I will restore to you double. P. This is the Word of the Lord People: Thanks be to God. Gradual for The Sunday of the Passion P. [Christ] entered once for all into the holy places, by means of his own blood, thus securing an eternal redemption. C. Therefore he is the mediator of a new covenant, so that those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance. P. He sent redemption to his people; he has commanded his covenant forever.

Choir The Palms By J. Faure Arrg. Bryceson Treharne Organist: Marilyn Smith Directed by: Alice Emme EPISTLE Philippians 2:5 11 5Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, 6who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7but made himself nothing, taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. 8And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. 9Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, 10so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Pastor: This is the Word of the Lord People: Thanks be to God HOLY GOSPEL JOHN 12:12-19 Pastor: The Holy Gospel according to St. John, the twelfth chapter People: Glory to You, O Lord. 12the next day the great crowd that had come for the Feast heard that Jesus was on his way to Jerusalem. 13They took palm branches and went out to meet him, shouting, Hosanna!

Blessed is he who come in the name of the Lord! Blessed is the King of Israel! 14Jesus found a young donkey and sat upon it, as it is written, 15 Do not be afraid, O Daughter of Zion: see you king is coming, seated on a donkey s colt. 16At first his disciples did not understand all this. Only after Jesus was glorified did they realize that these things had been written about him and that they had done these thing to him. 17Now the crowd that was with him when he called Lazarus from the tomb and raised him from the dead continued to spread the word. 18Many people, because they had heard that he had given this miraculous sign, went out to meet him. 19So the Pharisees said to one another, See, this is getting us nowhere. Look how the whole world has gone after him! Pastor: This is the Gospel of the Lord.
