Page Three St. Charles Borromeo Church February 5, 2017 IF ONE PART OF THE BODY OF CHRIST SUFFERS; ALL PARTS SUFFER WITH IT. IF ONE PART IS HONORED, ALL THE PARTS SHARE ITS JOY. 1 Corinthians 12:27 During the last several months the news media have made us very aware of the sufferings of thousands of innocent men, women, and children in war ravaged communities around the world. War is very devastating and can destroy family life. When people are suffering, it is our hearts, motivated by the love and example of Jesus, that must reach out and help as we are able. It is certainly uplifting to see the generosity, kindness, and effort extended by individuals and charitable groups reaching out day by day to help those who have suffered so much loss during these tragic days. Families in flight (with nowhere to lay their heads), move us to compassion. As they said about Jesus and the miracles He performed...amazing things are certainly taking place in His name. When we act in the name of Jesus, amazing things do happen! Over 2,000 years ago, St. Paul wrote to the early Christian Community in Corinth. They were struggling to find a way to follow Jesus when the tide always seemed to go against their little group. The pressures of a secular and sexually obsessed Corinthian community, eager only to satisfy their own desires, were very tempting to those who were getting to know Jesus through the preaching of the apostles in that busy merchant port of Corinth. Paul used a beautiful image of the human body made up of so many parts, each needing one another, and then described the Church as The Body of Christ. When one part of the Body suffers, we all suffer. So much of our ministry as a Catholic community in our Parish is centered on reaching out to the suffering body of Christ even in our own neighborhood. Reaching out to the homeless, the poor, the uneducated, the unsophisticated, the elderly, and sick is a simple gesture of recognizing that we need to profess our faith in action by struggling to help our weaker members who are suffering in some way today. If I speak in human and angelic tongues but do not have love, I am a resounding gong or a clashing cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and comprehend all mysteries and all knowledge; If I have all faith so as to move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing If I give away everything I own, and if I hand my body over so that I may boast But do not have love, I gain nothing. 1 Corinthians 13:1-3 Paul reminds us to love one another in a concrete way. In the next few weeks we will be announcing and asking once again for your commitment to TOGETHER IN MISSION. We are on a journey with others, not just in our parish but within our Archdiocese. There are a number of parishes and schools that need some help to continue serving their parishioners. The burden of service becomes easier when they believe they are supported by their brothers and sisters in other parishes around the Archdiocese. The efforts of our Church and the three hundred parishes that make up the Archdiocese of Los Angeles to reach out to our brothers and sisters in poorer parishes in our own diocese is admirable. Each year over 10 million dollars ($$$) is shared with poor parishes and schools that need financial assistance to keep their programs running for the benefit of the parishioners and children in our schools. Reaching out to adults and children in poor areas is proof to them that we consider them part of the Body of Christ. When they suffer, we all suffer. When they prosper, we all become better. PLEASE SUPPORT TOGETHER IN MISSION THIS YEAR. CONSIDER A GENEROUS PLEDGE THAT ONLY BENEFITS THE POOR. Sincerely yours in Christ, Monsignor Robert J. Gallagher

The school does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, disability, medical condition, sex or national and/or ethnic origin in the administration of educational policies, admissions policies, scholarship and loan programs, and athletic and other school-administered programs, although certain athletic leagues and other programs may limit participation and some archdiocesan schools operate as single sex schools. While the school does not discriminate against students with special needs, a full range of services may not always be available to them. Decisions concerning the admission and continued enrollment of a student in the school are based upon the student s emotional, academic and physical abilities and the resources available to the school in meeting the student s needs.
