A word from your Baroness: Well, we are starting into the summer tourney time and I am very excited. I hate the long drag of winter and look forward to going to events and seeing my friends from the SCA. As usual, we will try to make a baronial presence at many of the tourneys, but may not be at every one. If we are there, please plan on having a baronial tent of some sort set up. It may be the big pavilion or it may be a small popup, but we will try to have a home for everyone to gather under. Of course, we like to have some food so if you are planning on attending an event, please check with the seneschal or me to find out if there is a need and then plan to bring a little something, if you can. It is not required, but it is nice for our fighters to be able to nosh on some protein and have a drink of something cold. Also, if you go to an event, let s remember to tell someone if you have a medical issue or require medications of any kind. We don t want anyone to have an accident or end up at the emergency room because we didn t know your needs! Finally, if you can, why not ask a friend who does not know about the SCA to an event? Let them see us in action and not just at a fighter practice. I think watching the whole event makes a big impact. It is what got me started 14 years ago! Yours in Service (always), Katharine 4

A Message from your Baron: Greetings unto the wonderful Barony of Raven's Cove. As I am sure you are all no doubt aware by now, the SCA lost a good friend at the tourney of Ymir. As a result of this and other incidents, some big changes may be on the way. Please understand that as the SCA grows larger, life becomes more complicated. Our game becomes more complicated. With the North Carolina heat quickly approaching please be sure to look after yourselves when preparing for events, demos or even just fighter practices. The burden of keeping ourselves healthy is, and should be, on all of us personally. Never doubt that if someone is injured or in need, help will come from every angle. But please make sure to take extra thought in preparing yourself for everything that SCA activities might throw at you. That means: Drink plenty of water, don't over do it on the field, be careful when you are indulging yourself, and don't forget your sunscreen. (Mistress Morwena is still watching.) So in short, always be prepared to take care of yourself. It is the safest thing and the most responsible thing. Good luck and have fun. Baron Torquil MacTaggert, the Steadfast 5

From the Seneschal: Greetings to everyone! Our barony is growing by leaps and bounds. We are now looking at possibly expanding our borders into unclaimed territory. This will be a new challenge that will exist in the future but I am sure that we can all face it together head on and make it work. Please remember to hydrate, take care of each other and have safe travels wherever you roam in our Kingdom. I am so very proud of our officers that never fail to go beyond what is expected and working with each of you is a divine privilege. I hope this missive finds you all well, ready to take on the world and conquer each obstacle. In service, Lady Edan, Seneschal From the Knight s Marshal Greetings Covians We are moving into a new year with full force and great speed. Thus far we have made a fantastic showing at the events since the opening of tourney season. We have two additional armored marshals on the way, with the promise of more on the horizon. I am hoping to bring in some seasoned guest fighters to practice from time to time. This will allow ALL of our fighters to be pushed beyond their comfort levels and will result in the overall skill level of the Baronial forces improving. We will be focusing more on the rapier side very soon as we may have a newly re-warranted marshal in our midst. ~L From the Chirurgeon As winter seems to finally be creeping away, lets start hydrating now if we get in the habit BEFORE we feel the heat, we will be able to keep up with it when the heat finally arrives. ~L 6

From the Exchequer: The coffers are still looking well. We did have one expense this month and that for the site of Cypress Creek for the Regional practice. This expense still leaves our coffers at around $1500. Please be thinking of any fundraising activities that you would like to be doing so that we can increase the coffers and purchase the items we have been discussing, such as the trailor and items to help beautify our camp at WOW. In your service, Lady Amira of Raven's Cove From the Minister of Arts and Sciences: The A&S portion was a rather slow month: Class scheduling and instructors for up coming calendar by myself, Documentation by His Excellency Master Baron Torqual. A&S projects being worked on in the Barony: A pin together table Emrys A chain mail piece by Lord Lochlainn A small Viking catapult by Dragos of Raven's Cove. A lamellar suit of armor and accessories by Lord Roland. ~Lord Emrys From the Chatelain We have quite a few upcoming events that would be awesome to bring new people to. Notable among them are Hidden Mountain s Baronial Birthday, Ruby Joust, and Spring Crown Tourney. Each one of these events will be a fantastic introduction to the joy and excitement of the SCA. Also, one of our newest members, Lothian (Mark Lane), has done us a fantastic service by setting up a demo at the Strawberry Festival. I hope as many people as possible can attend May 9 th and 10 th. ~Lord Roland 7

From the Chronicler We need more pictures for the Cry! As you can see, the only pictures I had to work with from Tourney of Friends were of some lame looking marshal in training and dubious looking trio. If you would like your photos to be used in the Cry, be sure to catch me and sign a release form so that I can post your photos. For some, I may also need a model release form. I will be sure to contact you if that is the case. I am also working on updating the website and learning a new piece of desktop publishing software. I was hoping to publish the Cry this month using this new software, but I believe that I need a bit more time to learn the ins and outs of it to do true justice to the Cry. ~Lord Roland Upcoming Events of Baronial Interest The following listing includes events that members of the barony have expressed interest in attending as well as events being held by the barony itself. If you are a newcomer interested in attending any of these events please let a member of the barony know so that we may attempt to find space/accommodation for you. Coronation of William and Kara... April 4-6 Hidden Mountain Baronial Birthday...April 11-13 Nottinghill Coill BB...April 18-20 Spring Crown...May 2-4 Ruby Joust... May 23-26 8
