5 Third Sunday of Easter-April 15, 2018 Worship and Music Column During the first few weekends after Easter Sunday, our Gospel readings share accounts of the disciples encountering the risen Christ. On Divine Mercy Sunday, John s gospel told us how Jesus brought peace to his Apostles as he joined them on the evening of the Resurrection and appeared again the following week to help Thomas with his unbelief. Today, Luke s gospel picks up as two believers, who unknowingly traveled with Jesus on their way to Emmaus, race back to Jerusalem to share their experience with the rest of the disciples. As they share the exciting news that they recognized Jesus in the breaking of the bread, the resurrected Jesus comes into their midst, wishing them peace and explaining how the Scriptures were fulfilled in Him. Why is this important? Why is it valuable for us to hear what the risen Christ did and what He said to His disciples? It s important because, as Catholic Christians, we need to be Easter people. Every day the risen Christ invites us to move, to allow the breaking open that happens in a heart that is open to God and to all that divine love brings to us. We sense the inner movement, we listen to the voice of the Spirit, we pay attention to even fleeting emotions and responses that can be, in God s hands, tools for our ongoing creation. David Ruby What does it mean to live as an Easter person? It means that I allow myself to feel what I am feeling, and to work with those emotions, bringing them to prayer and asking the Holy Spirit to use the energy of those emotions to move me forward in some way. It means that I attend to people and situations within my circle of influence, always looking for ways to help souls, to interpret God s love in specific circumstances. It means that I move into my life rather than try to avoid it, deny it or run from it. It means that I quiet my life enough to perceive what God is saying to me, in my one life, this day. As the fifty days of the holy season of Easter unfold, I encourage you to take the time each day to open your heart and mind to where the risen Christ wants to lead you, his beloved disciple.
