Pastor s Corner Worship and Spiritual Life In case you didn t hear last weekend, I get to go to Ireland on the 5th of November and I am super excited! It will be the first extended vacation I have ever been on in my life, and my first time to Ireland. I m sort of counting down the days to my departure, which is a new experience for me. Over the last couple of weeks I have started walking from the rectory to the office on most days. It s not quite a mile, and so really not that far, and the exercise is good for me. I know I look young but I actually have pretty bad arthritis. I was diagnosed about 7years ago, just after I turned thirty, but apparently I had most likely had it for a few years before that. I take some basic medications for it but have also been blessed with old man kidneys so most medications don t go over real well when I try and take them. For this reason I try a lot of alternative types of remedies to keep my bones from hurting and a cheerful disposition. It s one of the reasons you ll hear about me trying different diets. One of the most successful remedies I have found thus far is to keep moving. If I sit still too long I can get pretty rickety, so I try to keep moving around as much as possible. Walking to work is a great way to help with this. It is also a great way to increase my time for personal prayer, cut down on meetings and get to know the community. I m becoming pretty friendly with some of the members of the homeless community between Immaculate and Perpetual Help just off of Everett Ave. For those of you who appreciate doing what we can to cut down on auto emissions, walking to work every day makes me your resident green-priest. That was a BIG deal in Bellingham, but I don t know the culture well enough down here yet to know whether that is a thing or not. In any case, my bones have been feeling pretty good for the last few weeks since I started walking, and the weather has been perfect for it. Inclement weather won t really sway me though, as I m prepared with appropriate gear for wind, rain, sleet and snow. Sometimes I think I should have been a mailman or a Pony Express rider. Don t be surprised if you see me hoofing it from one location to another; it helps keep my sane, cheerful and pain-free. Or at least pain-reduced. Prayers Always, Fr. CRS asks us to pray, learn and act for those in our world who suffer from hunger. PRAY: Prayer of the Helping Hands (excerpt): Bountiful Lord, when thousands stood before you, hungry and tired, you first invited your disciples to feed them and then you showed them how. In your love for humanity, you have invited us to be vessels of your compassion and mercy; show us how to play a part in your miracles. Lord, we do not confront the hunger of 5,000 today but the hunger of nations. But we have many hands and full hearts, and we have your Gospel to show us the way. We are young and old, we are weak and strong, with different faces and different talents. Through you, the compassion of a small, overlooked child became a feast for all who hungered. Look upon the compassion of those gathered here today.what you taught us is that we have enough right here and right now to do untold wonders. May all the members of your family eat until they are satisfied. Amen. LEARN: These are stories of families you will meet more fully during Lent Norma, a young mother in Guatemala whom CRS taught to teach other mothers health and nutritional practices to help them better care for their children; Annet, a South Sudanese refugee, whom CS is helping to raise her siblings in the Bidi Bidi refugee settlement in Uganda; Christyan, a farmer and refugee whom CRS helped to return from India to his home in Sri Lanka to raise his family. ACT: In honor of World Food Day, raise your voice to oppose cuts to foreign aid and ensure that Congress funds lifesaving programs that reduce hunger and malnutrition, and helps reduce the number of migrants and refugees seeking asylum in our country by dealing with the root causes of migration and refugee flight. You can easily send an email to your elected representatives at support.crs.org/act/share-journey-11.

Immaculate Conception & Our Lady of Perpetual Help School News Youth Ministry Announcements ICOLPH Alum Alex Peterson spent a day off from school volunteering at ICOLPH this week, and we were blessed to have him here helping out in a number of classrooms! Alex, a senior this year, has been involved in Drama, basketball, tennis, and the National Torch Honor Society. This year he plans to add swimming to his list of activities as well. In addition, he was involved in Advanced Leadership and was Junior Class Treasurer last year, and is a Senior Class Senator this year. What does the future hold for Alex? Well, this stock trading Senior would like to study finance in college. He is applying to a handful of top-notch Universities, any of which would be lucky to have him attend! We will continue to watch as Alex makes his mark on the world, in big and small ways! YOUTH MINISTRY SCHEDULE Confirmation Class Sundays, 4:25 p.m. in the St. Don Bosco Room High School and Middle School Youth Groups are suspended until further notice. Religious Education Announcements Elementary Faith Formation prays the Living Rosary... There will be no Elementary Faith Formation classes on October 31 st. As a parish, let us pray this prayer of thanksgiving for all the catechists in our parish: Jesus, you told us that laborers for the vineyard would be few and that we should pray to the Lord of the Harvest in the hope that many might respond. You have answered our prayers by sending us catechists for your vineyard. Bless these men and women who have responded to your call to the ministry of catechesis. May they be filled with zeal for your Church, with care for those they catechize, and with love for your Word of Life. Let your Spirit come upon them so that your Word may echo through their teaching and through the witness of their lives. Through catechists, may the members of our parish whom they teach be transformed into witnesses to your Word. And may these catechists receive the blessing your Son promised to all who labor in your vineyard. We pray to you, gracious Father, in the name of your Son, Jesus, the Word of Life, and in the unity of the Holy Spirit who transforms us by that Word, one God, forever and ever. Amen. October is Respect Life Month. We are called to cherish, defend and protect those who are most vulnerable, life s inception to its natural end at every point between. This year s theme is Every Life: Cherished, Chosen, Sent. For information on personal action and intercessions, please go to www.usccb.org/about/pro-life-activities/respect-life-program/index.cfm. PREPARES is a ministry throughout our State that gives hope to families (regardless of whether or not they are Catholic) who face challenges in providing a nurturing home for their children. Whether it be financial need or a lack of healthy parental role models, we compassionately respond with friendship, assist with basic needs and help in getting assistance through public programs, if needed. The need is so great now, and we don t have many people willing to become companions. Do you feel God calling you to help someone struggling with a new pregnancy or maybe needing some parenting advice or assistance with basic needs for their children? If you have questions or are interested, please call Sheila Davis at (425)931-4537.
