ST COLUMBA S CATHOLIC SCHOOL NEWSLETTER Term 2 - Week 7 Principal's Message : Dear Parents & Caregivers, Last Thursday we celebrated St Columba Day. What a wonderful day it was for all of us here at SCCS. The highlight for me was the Sing Off held in Te Manawa, where everyone was brimming with excitement and was fully immersed in the house challenge. It was a fantastic display with the children dressed in their house Saints colours, the true spirit of our Catholic school was on show and I was very proud of the efforts that everyone went to. We Te Kura O Hato Karama thank the Chiefs for allowing us to have Tim Nanai-Williams to support the morning by judging the sing off - thank you Tim. We also thank Helen Eagleton for the memories that she collects for us by taking the photos you all see on Facebook and in the newsletter - thank you Helen. Thank you all for your attendance at your child's student-led conference last week. It is important for you to be aware that you are able to meet with your child's teacher at any time throughout the year. If you missed last weeks opportunity to meet the teacher with your son or daughter please feel free to make an appointment with the teacher for a mutually convenient time.

With the inclement weather upon us and a very busy car park area, we have noted a number of safety issues. Therefore, car park safety will be a focus for the next few weeks. I would like to make our school community aware that we are putting more staff on the car park to monitor the safer use of the church parking area. It is important that we all observe the yellow lines, no parking around the side of the old hall and no parking in the disabled car parks unless you have an certified sticker. On wet days particularly, people are prone to breaching these guidelines, which in turn causes safety risks. A great site for parents to visit: https://www.netsafe.org.nz/byod/ For all personal contact changes please email: admin@sccs.school.nz God Bless Gareth Duncan KEY DATES Term 2 - Monday 30 th April Friday 6 th July Please take advantage of the drop-off zone in front of the school each morning and afternoon (but do not leave your vehicle). The drop-off bay is not a parking zone at any time during school hours. If you walk your children into school, then please park in the church car park, or on Rifle Range Road. To help with the flow of traffic, there will be staff on duty to provide reminders, please do not be offended if we speak to you. Disabled car parks are allocated for disabled drivers with certified stickers, so please keep these parks free at all times. Mon 18th June Wed 20th June Thurs 21st June Fri 22nd June Mon 25th June Tues 26th June PTFA Meeting Class and Individual Photos St Vincent De Paul Vinnies Mini Gala Team 4 Catholic Interschools Winter Sports Day. School closes @ 12.15pm for Paid Union Meeting BOT Meeting Thank you for keeping our children safe. HELP needed from people who have a spare 30 minutes each afternoon to support the teaching staff monitor in the church car park. The job would entail supporting the safe use of our car park space, monitor cars parking on yellow lines and ensuring children's safety. Please call the school office and leave your name with Janine. Whanāu Meeting - 3rd July Our Whanau meeting is a fantastic way for all St Columba's families (of all cultures) to come together. The purpose of our night is to showcase our school Kapa Haka Group and their wonderful talents. On the night we will also be discussing children's learning programmes, sharing food and good stories. All families are welcome and we expect children to attend the evening with you. Tues 3rd July Fri 6th July Whanāu meeting Mufti Day PTFA: I would like to thank the PTFA for the work that they do and the unrelenting focus they have on raising funds to be used for the children at SCCS. Thank you to all involved in this group and thank you for your leadership Janeene and the team. Funds raised this year will be put towards the following areas: - Technology equipment for the classrooms - Playground equipment - Wet weather board games - Gardening tools and environmental support The next PTFA meeting is - Monday 18th June at 7pm in the staffroom. Everyone is welcome to attend and support the fundraising efforts.

M eal Appeal Next term, we are continuing to explore what it means to be Catholic in very real and practical ways. Our children will be able to tell you what it means to be "Proud to be Catholic" and we know that this begins with the foundation that you as parents lay for our students. We are very aware of a need within our community to provide practical assistance for families who are experiencing trauma and grief. School is often a place where "community" is a strength and this is one way that we are able to demonstrate our Cornerstone Values of love and caring. We envisage a group of people coming together in the hall kitchen, maybe once per term, armed with crock pots to prepare ingredients that can cook throughout the day, package these meals up and pop them into the freezer at the end of that same day. Helpers would not be expected to stay the entire day - maybe a hour at each end of the school day would be enough time to get the job done. This would give us a supply of meals that we can offer to those in our community who need them, when they need them. If you have any of the below which are surplus to requirements, please let us know. What we need: donations of surplus homekill would be great (we are not expecting families to buy meat specifically for this!) donation of an upright freezer in good working condition your time (date to be decided next term) If you feel that you are able to contribute any of the above, please leave your name, number and the way that you are able to help at the school office. More details about organisation of the day will follow once we have our initial team of helpers and idea of availability of meat donations. Bless You, and Thanks from The Pastoral Care Team at St Columba's Wednesday 6th June - ITM Tough Guy / Gal Mud Run Challenge We had 38 SCCS students participate for the school this year. They all represented St Columba's and themselves, extremely well! The weather was perfect (with a shower or 5). Smiles were wide and muscles were pumping as our athletes showed the course who was 'boss'. A massive thanks to all the parents that were able to come along and support the students, and an extra special thanks to Richie Peters for the sausage sizzle. Wanna do it all again next year? Keep your eye out for the 2019 sign ups. Well done everyone! Mr Wright

ST COLUMBA S FEAST DAY We had a fantastic St Columba s feast day last Thursday. Everyone got into the spirit of the day by dressing in their house colours. After learning about St Columba in class, the whole school participated in a sing-off - the songs were chosen by the House Leaders who had put a lot of effort into the preparation and practises for the event. Congratulations to St Teresa of Avila (Yellow House) who won the sing-off. We are very grateful to our special guest, Tim Nanai-Williams, who took the time to help with the judging. The tabloid sports began after morning tea - there was a real happy buzz around the school as children enjoyed participating in lots of fun activities in their house groups. What a great way to celebrate the feast day of our Patron Saint. SUZANNE AUBERT S 183rd BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION-19th JUNE All things going well, Suzanne Aubert will soon be our first New Zealand Saint. Our school will pay tribute to her by celebrating her 183rd birthday next Tuesday the 19th of June with a huge birthday cake at lunchtime - everyone will get a piece. If you would like to know more about this amazing woman, you can go to the Sisters of Compassion website or view the youtube clip on her: https://compassion.org.nz/schools/suzanne-aubert/ ST VINCENT DE PAUL VINNIES MINI-GALA DAY Next Thursday We would like to let you know that next week on Thursday the 21st June, the St Vincent de Paul Vinnies will be having a Mini Gala at lunchtime. The proceeds will enable the Vinnies to undertake a project in the parish. Please take note that this isn t a mufti day and there is no gold coin donation.your child will need to bring an amount of money to purchase our products. Most prices will be under $1. A limited number of sausages will be for sale - first in first served. Children will still need to bring their lunch to school as usual. Stalls will include: decorating biscuits, sherbet, loom band bracelets, crazy hair, treasure hunt, sausage sizzle, books and soft toys and books sale*. *We are looking for donations of any children s books and soft toys (clean and unbroken) Please hand in to Mr Goodison in Harakeke class.
