K of C Schola Cantorum We want you!! We are in need of new members. The only requirements are an appreciation of traditional Sacred Music as well as more contemporary and patriotic music, the ability to carry a tune, and the enjoyment of fellowship with other Schola members. We meet on Tuesday evenings, beginning 3-4 weeks prior to a scheduled event, at Pellegrino s Event Center on Littlerock Rd. at 7pm. Light refreshments are usually provided. We sing for such events as Memorial Day Mass at St. Michael Church, followed by ceremonies at Calvary Cemetery, our annual Memorial Day Mass for deceased members at the Hall, our annual Christmas recital for the Council and 4 th Degree Christmas party, and any other special events that we are invited to sing at. We have become especially well known, in past recent years, for our singing of the National Anthem at Cheney Stadium, prior to one of the Rainier s games. If you are interested, please call Sam Pellegrino at (360) 259-7337. FAITHFUL NAVIGATOR S MESSAGE Worthy Sir Knights of Assembly 1183 Not much to put out for October. The Veterans dinner is next month; please see the flyer in this bulletin. We had the Cowboy BBQ last month to raise money for the upcoming dinner. Thanks to all who came out and put in hard work to get the event ready but I have to be blunt and say the turnout was less than stellar. So the assembly officers will welcome ideas on how to make this a great event. Korey Wessel Faithful Navigator St. Francis of Assisi, Assembly 1183 keydet11@gmail.com 540-319-3366 Page 4 of 12

October is both Pro-Life month and the month for Mary. We are beginning the 21st campaign for 40 Days for Life. Pray the Rosary this month especially to ask for Mary to help in the Pro-Life arena. Angelorium, Next Step Pregnancy of Lynwood, WA recently held an open house celebrating the installation of their new ultrasound machine funded by the Knights of Columbus. The executive director, Kathy Dizzard, and staff are shown along with Ron DeGroot, the WA. State Culture of Life Chairman around what appears as R2D2. It is actually their new ultrasound machine. I was shown an image of a 5 week, 5 day old fetus that was crystal clear and the heartbeat could be easily measured. Next Step Pregnancy is making a difference! This machine replaced an older, warn out machine that was not able to get this clarity. The mom was euphoric, so very excited to see her baby. There was NO WAY she would terminate her pregnancy! Council 1643 sent $1,500 to 4US in support of this initiative. 4US in turn gave Council 1643 a grant in the amount of $5,000 for us to support this PCC through the State Ultrasound Initiative. We need to find other pregnancy resource centers in need of an ultrasound machine. We need to get Archdiocesan approval for each organization and location. We need to find PRC's that can work together with Catholics. Finding and getting approval is the most difficult part of the process. I will be happy to help you and walk you through the process. I also would like to share a news blurb that I received from Paul Robertson, DD14, concerning information about an international right to life petition organized by C-FAM. Petition on the right to life in international law. In the coming weeks, the UN Human Rights Committee is deciding whether or not to exclude the unborn child from the right-to-life clause of an important UN human rights treaty. The Human Rights Committee in Geneva wants to exclude the unborn child so that abortion can be an international human right. The Center for Family and Human Rights and other pro-life organizations have launched a petition to be presented at UN headquarters. The petition is available on-line at https://cfam.org/right-life-international/ Page 8 of 12

From Leavenworth (Washington) Well, our home now looks like a grenade hit it instead of a bomb, progress Sorry it has taken me so long to write this. I fully intended to thank all who attended our wonderful send off at Columbian Hall. I have no idea who was responsible for organizing, but I think I have some idea. Thank you Peggy Pursley, Mike Colosi and anyone else for laying the ground work. I figure Peggy was the instigator. Sam, you came through, as always, with my favorite meat balls and sauce. Barbara and I were in the truck driving home the other night and ran across our KGY tootsie roll advertisement in 2012. Hard to believe the changes since that advertisement was made. Dave Wickersham for the beautiful stencil work, Tom Pursley for the Centennial GK mug and all who gave letters of good wishes and prayers. We sure have mixed emotions about leaving Olympia. The conversation to move to Leavenworth started 20 years ago, believe it or not. It recently picked up speed this last fall when a property became available in a location we wanted. With Anna graduating high school last June, the plan was to put the home on the market, two weeks later maybe have an offer, with a closing 60 days later. That time frame was blown out of the water when we received an offer four hours after listing and they wanted in now. You can imagine how Anna felt with the potential of not being able to spend her last summer with her friends. She ended up staying with a friends family for the summer, so it worked out. Whether this is the right decision or not, time will tell. The intent is to have vacation rentals on our property if we can get approval from the county and local concerns. Mixed emotions is putting it lightly when we think of ALL the friends we have made over the 9 years in Olympia, Lacey, Tumwater, Shelton, Hoodsport.A majority of Anna s life has been spent on the Westside of the mountains and is particularly hard on her. She is at WSU in Pullman and seems to be adjusting well. I will remain a member of 1643, however my involvement will be centered here in Council 13597 Leavenworth/Cashmere and as State Treasurer. 13597 is very involved in the Special Olympics Winter Games and many other activities. They are a small group, as compared to 1643, but are sincere about what they do. Bishop Tyson has ordered that Leavenworth/Cashmere combine into one parish and build a new facility somewhere in between. That has caused a lot of tension and Fr. Miguel is looking for neutral parties When we arrived 9 years ago, Shelton was in the process of building a new church too, but they were not combining with another parish, only leaving an earthquake damaged building. Little different. I know, here I go again writing to much. Just know that Barbara and I will miss everyone and love you all. A visit once a month will be warranted for a few months, so we will still see you from time to time. Oktoberfest is the next plan. God be with you all!! Kim and Barbara Washburn Page 10 of 12

September 2017 Knight of the Month Corbett Thornton The Father Nicholas Rausch OSB Council 1643 Knight of the month for September 2017 is Corbett Thornton. Brother Corb joined the Knights in 2004 in York, Pennsylvania. Corb has been the Faithful Scribe for Assembly 1183 with this year marking his tenth year performing that responsibility. Corb is now retired after serving in various management positions in the manufacturing world for 45 years. Corb is in the Color Corps which provides honor guards for weddings, funerals, and the St. George annual pilgrimage. He also perfoms these duties for confirmations at St. Michael and Sacred Heart. He participates in the 40 Days for Life and Show the Truth at Planned Parenthood in Olympia. Corb is an active member in the Schola Choir, most notably recognized for singing the National Anthem at the Tacoma Rainers baseball game in July. Corb helps cook for the annual Cowboy BBQ, which benefits needy veterans. He also helps cook for the Columbian Hall Fish Fries, and helps with donut sales at St. Michael after Mass. Once a month he and Brother Corb his wife Elaine help serve dinner for those in need at Olympia s Catholic Community Services Community Kitchen. Also, Corb helps the Knights with the annual Tootsie Roll Drive and helps with clean-up days at Holy Theophany Monastery. Corb belongs to the St. Michael downtown choir with his wife, Elaine. He and Elaine are also responsible for sending out bereavement and get well cards to those Knights in need. Corb said the reason he joined the Knights can be described in one word, service, service to my Church and my Country. Thank you, Brother Corb, for all that you continue to do, and congratulations on being selected as our Knight of the Month for September. Family of the Month for September 2017 Don and Song Bunz Unfortunately, this no write-up for Don and Song this month. Page 11 of 12
