KAJ NEWSLETTER A monthly publication of K hal Adath Jeshurun February 14, 18 כ''ט שבט תשע''ח Volume 48 Number 5 The 68 th ANNUAL DINNER of KAJ & YRSRH will take place this Sunday, February 18 th at the Teaneck Marriott at Glenpointe We look forward to seeing you there! YAHRZEIT OF RAV SCHWAB 14 Adar (March 1 st ) marks the 23 rd yahrzeit of Rav Shimon Schwab zt l. Rav Schwab served as Rav of our Kehilla for close to 40 years and left an indelible imprint on our Kehilla and its members, as well as the Jewish world in general, through his teachings and writings. As a product of Frankfurt am Main and a talmid of the Hirsch Realschule and the Frankfurt Yeshiva, Rav Schwab was steeped in the philosophy of Rav Samson Raphael Hirsch. As a talmid also of the Eastern European yeshivos in Telshe and Mir, Rav Schwab had the opportunity to come into close contact with many gedolim of pre-war Europe who greatly influenced his life. Rav Schwab s influence is still felt in our community and throughout the Jewish world..יהי זכרו ברוך SPECIAL SHIUR With the positive response to the Kehilla s past legal holiday special shiurim, there will be another special shiur, on Monday, February 19 th at 8:45 AM in Dr. Moller Hall. The shiur will be given by Rabbi Avrohom Mansbach, Shoel umeishiv, Yeshiva Emek HaTorah. The Marei Mekomos are printed below. בענין מצות זכירת מעשה עמלק מגילה (י"ח,א) קראה על פה עד זכור בפה תוס' שם (י"ז,ב) ד"ה כל התורה רמב"ן עה"ת דברים (כ"ה, י"ז) ד"ה זכור עד והנכון תרומת הדשן ס' ק"ח שער הציון ס' תרפ"ה ס"ק ה ' SHIVTI YARCHEI KALLO Inspiring, uplifting, elevating, recharging were some of the words used to describe the recent, two-day Fifth Annual Shivti Yarchei Kallo in which five local Washington Heights Baalie Batim joined over four hundred and fifty businessmen and professionals from across the country, for an intensive learning program which ran Motzoei Shabbos through Monday, January 6-8. The Yarchei Kallo, held at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Princeton, NJ, provided an opportunity to return לפני of to Yeshiva for 48 hours of undisturbed learning. This year s Yarchei Kallo learned the sugya delving into the sources of the halocho and its intricacies and present-day applications. The,עור renowned Rav Asher Weiss, Av Beis Din and Rosh Kollel in Yerushalayim, served as the Rosh Kallo and gave several shiurim. In addition, participants heard Shiurim by various Rabbonim, as well as well as Divrei Chizuk from the Lakewood Roshei Yeshiva. The Yarchei Kallo is an extension of the weekly Shivti program in which participants learn a designated sugya from a compilation of source material in booklet form distributed each week by Beth Medrash

Vol. 47, No. 4 KAJ NEWSLETTER Page 2 Govoha (Lakewood Yeshiva). The KAJ Shivti group meets in our Beis Medrash every Sunday morning to learn the sugya bechavrusa and then to hear a shiur from Rabbi Yisroel Stein, a Shoel umeishiv in our Beis HaMedrash. We look forward to the next year s Sixth Annual Yarchei Kallo with an even larger WH representation, as well as welcoming additional participants in our weekly Shitvi group. If anyone would like more information, please contact Avram Cahn. MIKRO LECTURES The Board of Trustees thanks the following individuals (in order of presentation) who graciously volunteered to give the weekly Mikro Lectures each week (except Chanukah) from Parashas Chayei Sora through Parashas Yisro in Shul Friday evenings after davening: Rabbi Yehoshua Fulda, Rabbi Avi Rogin, Mr. Albert Blank, Mr. Yechiel Schrader, Rabbi Menachem Kunofsky, Mr. Michoel Meir Levi, Rabbi Rafael Bachrach, Rabbi Moshe Eisdorfer, Mr. Joey Gutmann, Rabbi Kalman Strauss, Mr. Avram Cahn, and Mr. Yaakov Oldak. Your efforts were most appreciated. Many thanks as well to Rabbi Yitzchok Israel for the arranging of these lectures as well as the Thursday night Chumash shiurim, which continue weekly. NEWS FROM OUR YESHIVA Elementary School Rabbi Avrohom Hoffman s first grade boys celebrated their receiving Chumashim with a Mesiba in Moller Hall. Rav Mantel; Rabbi Yehuda Moller, Menahel of the elementary school; and Rabbi Hoffman addressed the audience of parents, grandparents, siblings and other relatives and friends of the Talmidim. Pre-School Mrs. Miriam Huffman s Pre-1A boys class, in conjunction with learning about the calendar cycle and the Mitzvo of HaChodesh HaZeh Lochem on Rosh Chodesh Shevat! during the week of with Parashas

Vol. 47, No. 4 KAJ NEWSLETTER Page 3 Bo, was treated to a hands-on demonstration and explanation, by Rabbi Yisroel Strauss, as pictured below. SISTERHOOD LECTURE On January 9 טבת/,כ''ג the ladies of the Sisterhood were privileged to hear Ms. Shayna Weinberg-Gordon speak on the topic Davening for Those Who Are Sick, Insights and Inspirations. She addressed fascinating subtopics, such as: -is it a mitzvah to pray for those who are sick? -who is responsible for davening for a choleh? -in what location should the Tefilla take place? -do we have a right to try to overrule G-d's decrees? -is it imperative to use the sick person's name, and, if so, which name? -is it ever appropriate to daven for a person who is going through incredible suffering to die? Shayna Weinberg-Gordon currently works long hours as an attorney for New York City's Administration for Children's Services. Although her schedule is incredibly busy she puts her all into preparing the many wonderful shiurim she gives to the women in our community. Shayna's lectures delve deeply into the topics addressed, utilizing myriad sources of varied Rabbinic luminaries. This fascinating lecture was particularly relevant since we all know or know of someone who is ill and in need of Rachamei Shomayim. In her engaging, clear style Shayna covered the topic so that we all have a better understanding of how to practically handle illness with hope, positivity and faith. SENIOR SOCIAL CLUBS OF KAJ ENJOYS MOZART, BRAHMS, AND A TASTE OF MODERNITY On December 2 nd, four dozen members and friends of the Senior Social Clubs of KAJ attended a classical concert at David Geffen Hall in Lincoln Center. On the program was the world premiere of Evening Land by Bent Sorensen, Mozart s 20th piano concerto (which he finished the day before it was first performed in 1785), and Brahm s 2nd symphony. At the piano was Emanuel Ax, recipient of the Avery Fisher Prize and a local New Yorker, while conducting was Edo de Waart, music director of the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra and conductor

Vol. 47, No. 4 KAJ NEWSLETTER Page 4 laureate of the Antwerp Symphony, Netherlands Radio Philharmonic, and Milwaukee Symphony orchestras. For the first time, the KAJ group sat in the very first rows of the orchestra, giving them a unique perspective both literally and figuratively on the evening s musical performances. A HUNDRED GATHER FOR SSC MELAVE MALKA Sitting together as a Kehilla, filling the entirety of Moller Hall, is always a source of chizuk and a reason for celebration. On December 30th, a hundred members of the Kehilla enjoyed this opportunity for the 3rd annual Melave Malka of the Senior Social Clubs of KAJ. In addition to experiencing wonderful company, ambiance, and delectable food, (hot buffet, salad bar, sushi, wine and a sumptuous choice of cheese cakes and ice cream), participants heard words of inspiration from Rabbi Zecharia Wallerstein. Rabbi Wallerstein is the nephew of our member Mr. Siegfried Holzer, and his connections to Washington Heights run deep. Rabbi Wallerstein shared reminiscences of Washington Heights and spoke of the importance of doing everything we can to fulfill HaShem s will. If we do our share HaShem will help us and do His, he emphasized. The Melave Malka was organized by Senior Social Clubs director Mrs. Molly Resnick and was dedicated to the memory of Mrs. Margot Knoller who was a force behind the scenes for the Senior Social Clubs for many years. Her daughter and son-in-law, Betty and Moshe Pilicer, were guests of the Kehilla. NEWS FROM MORIAH SENIOR CENTER Moriah s Craft Class designed striking leaded glass pedestal cake plates in a challenging two-part series. Delicate flowers were leaded onto the stands and colorful stain was applied within for a stunning effect.

Vol. 47, No. 4 KAJ NEWSLETTER Page 5 When a big snowstorm hit in early January, Moriah was at the ready. While the majority of New York senior centers opted to close, Moriah staff felt that our services were needed more than ever, and not only remained open, but boasted 100% staff attendance! In addition, several of our hardier seniors offered to deliver meals to our snow-bound members. Between those meals, and the meals delivered by our chessed-minded Yeshiva boys Ezra Feigenbaum, Ary Levi, Meir Levi and Zalman Koenigsberg dozens of hot meals and friendly smiles warmed the hearts of our elderly clients. Moriah seniors were treated to the sonorous tones of tenor Salvatore Chiarelli, as he presented a program, accompanied by pianist Ishmael Wallace, titled From Italy with Love. Audience members might have been heard quietly crooning along from their seats. Moriah s earlier Book Club selection, Clara & Mr. Tiffany, served as almost required reading for our recent trip to the New York Historical Society s Gallery of Tiffany Lamps. This newly renovated exhibit dazzles the eye with colorful bursts of nature artfully depicted in glass. Our guided tour detailed how in fact Clara Driscoll was responsible for most of these iconic designs and how the social climate of the day dictated who could perform labor and what it could entail (Only single women could work for Mr. Tiffany and only men could apply the leading to the finished shades.). The Society has a collection of over 100 Tiffany lamps, bequeathed from a single donor s private collection, and, being the largest of its kind, is a definite mustsee. Moriah is actively seeking volunteers to assist with check-in and lunch service. Volunteer for an hour, volunteer once a week, or volunteer more often. The choice is yours. If you are interested it being part of our warm and welcoming environment, please call us at 212-923-5715.

Vol. 47, No. 4 KAJ NEWSLETTER Page 6 If you are 60+, working or retired, this might be the time to come in and register. See what Moriah can offer you. If you would like to receive our monthly newsletter via email, please contact us at moriahcenter@gmail.com. JAK RETTELSWEN To replicate the Sisterhood s extremely successful Purim Cards campaign, the Ladies Auxiliary and almost every other affiliate of KAJ and YRSRH have been examining other, equally promising, possible fund-raising campaigns and events. Since many of our members only move their cars when forced to by alternate side of the street parking, and since these rules are suspended over Sukkos, it was suggested we offer Weather-Tech, custom-fit, made-in-the-usa S chach to turn your vehicles doors into a Sukka. However, since Hashgocho was only obtainable as Kosher all year round VeLo Al Sukkos the practicality of this idea was somewhat debatable. (While intended for the parking spots of Washington Heights, this particular model was photographed on a Chol hamoed trip all the way up at Bear Mountain, where, we were told, the bears were very intrigued and gave a token donation to KAJ.) A proposal from the back of the room (and of Shul), was to offer members an alternate to the all-too-familiar Chazon's declaration of "Shesika Yoffo b Sh as HaTefillo" This sign, imported directly for Yerushalayim Ir HaKodesh, would give members some alternate facts upon which to rely.

Vol. 47, No. 4 KAJ NEWSLETTER Page 7 While the wooden spoons of Bedikas Chomeitz mailings seem to have gone the way of Chanuka wicks, it was suggested we send a much rarer item: 10 pieces of chomeitz, to be hidden prior to the Bediko; a treasure map would be sent along. However, before the Bylaws Committee, could even nix the idea as risking too many lawsuits by irate housewives furious at their missing one, it was discovered that this product is already in existence, and a best-seller Nevertheless, we are pleased to announce that LeChayim caterers will indeed be selling such packets at the deli counter, double wrapped in aluminum foil bearing KAJ s kashruth seal. Asked about this turn of events, Mr. Dyckman replied that this new venture would perfectly complement the fish-heads he sells before Rosh HaShono. We are now urging him to consider stocking live fish, as well as chickens, for Kapporos.

Vol. 47, No. 4 KAJ NEWSLETTER Page 8 However, the general consensus was that the winner for the next mailing seems to be the following. Designed specifically for those makpid on their kavanos b'sh as asiyas hamitzvos, we are pleased to offer the placard pictured below, available in 2 sizes, to fit in a Rodelheim or Artscroll Shul Chumosh, just in time for Pesach. (Many thanks to Agudas Yisroel Beis Binyomin for their excellent idea.)
