This Christmas Custom began with a simple white wafer, baked from flour and water. The wafers are wonderfully designed to display Christmas images, such as the Nativity. How to celebrate this tradition The Oplatki are enjoyed by families, typically right before the Christmas Eve meal. The entire family will gather around the table with the Oplatek. Generally the eldest member of the family will begin the ritual by breaking off a piece of the wafer and passing it to another family member with a blessing. This blessing can simply consist of what you desire for your loved one in the upcoming year whether it be good health, success, or happiness. The purpose of this act is primarily to express ones unconditional love and forgiveness for each member of his or her family. Oplatki are available for purchase in our Religious Good Room for $2.50 a package. Join a ministry and know the joy of serving Christ. 5

Second Collection for December 15th/16th weekend Retirement Fund for Religious The best thing I did in ministry was to teach children the Gospel through plays, says Sister Clare Vandecoevering, 88. Oh, they were just delighted! A member of the Sister of St. Mary of Oregon, she spent more than 50 years in the classroom, sharing her love of Jesus and bringing the Catholic faith to life. Perhaps there was a Sister Clare in your life. Perhaps a special religious man or woman shared with you love, faith, and a belief in all that you could become. Maybe you knew more than one. Today those sisters, brothers, religious order priests may be elderly, and their religious communities may struggle to meet retirement needs. Your gift to the Retirement Fund for Religious supports necessities such as medications and nursing care and helps ensure the next generation of Sister Clares can continue in ministry. Thank you for your generosity. SPRED is a Faith Formation program for children and adults with special needs. Small faith communities welcome these individuals and offer the promise of inclusion in the sacramental life of the parish. Every parish in the Archdiocese of Chicago is called to offer appropriate faith formation for persons of all ages with special needs. SPRED is the answer to that call. Parishes work in collaboration with one another. A group of parishes form a network of SPRED programs to respond to both children and adults with developmental and/or cognitive disabilities. St. Peter Damian is part of this mission. A SPRED group for children 6-10 years old will begin at our parish in the fall. This group will meet every other Thursday beginning October 11th evening from 6:00-7:30pm in the chapel lower halls. If you know someone with special needs who may benefit from SPRED, please contact St. Peter Damian Faith Formation Office at faithformation@stpeterdamian.org or by phone at 630-830-2295. Mary Doeseckle, the SPRED coordinator, will be happy to answer any questions you may have. You may visit the SPRED website at www.spred-chicago.org. Have you considered belonging to our Church family? 7
