Liturgical Bits & Bytes The Trinity and the Consecration The Holy Spirit is invoked as the agent through whose power the transformation of the bread and wine into the Body and Blood of Christ can occur. The presider prays, And so, Father, we bring you these gifts. We ask you to make them holy by the power of your Spirit, that they may become the body and blood of your Son, our Lord, Jesus Christ, at whose command we celebrate this Eucharist. This quote from Eucharistic Prayer III is probably one of the clearest statements of the involvement of the three persons of the Trinity in our worship. The Institution Narrative The Institution Narrative is the part that retells the story of the last supper. It is, in fact, a narrative. This is the part that the Western Church generally regards as the consecration. An interesting note, however, is that some of the Eucharistic Prayers in the early Church did not include the institution narrative. As the theology of the Eucharist develops, a number of theologians now describe the entire prayer as consecratory. The important thing is that the consecration occurs through the power of the Holy Spirit, invoked by the presider, who, through ordination, has been given the authority to act in the name of the assembled community, the Church. The Memorial Acclamation The Memorial Acclamation follows the Institution Narrative. It is our turn once again to enter into the dialogue. The presider says, The mystery of faith. There are four possible responses. Usually these are sung. Again, this is one of the most important of the assembly's parts of the Mass, and so there is a preference that it be sung. Ideally, the presider encourages the sung response by singing the invitation. The sung response is one of the opportunities we have during the liturgy to express and witness to our faith. Copyright 2008 Resource Publications, Inc. All rights re- Prayer of the Week Prayer of Pope Clement XI Lord, I believe in you: increase my faith. I trust in you: strengthen my trust. I love you: let me love you more and more. I am sorry for my sins: deepen my sorrow. I worship you as my first beginning, I long for you as my last end, I praise you as my constant helper, and call on you as my loving protector. I want to do what you ask of me: In the way you ask, for as long as you ask, Because you ask it. Let me love you, my Lord and my God, and see myself as I really am: a pilgrim in this world, a Christian called to respect and love all whose lives I touch. Amen Sunday Readings & Reflections Readings for Sunday, July 9, 2017 Laying down your burdens Reading I Zechariah 9:9-10 (restoration under the Messiah) Reading II Romans 8:9, 11-13 (indwelling of the Spirit) Gospel Matthew 11:28-29 (Jesus and his Father) Key Passage: Jesus said, Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. (Matthew 11:28-29) Adult: When has Jesus refreshed you when you felt burdened by problems? Youth: What burden do you need Jesus to help you carry? Saint of the Week Saint Kateri Tekakwitha On July 14 th, the Church celebrates the feast of St. Kateri Tekakwitha, the first native American to be recognized as a saint. Kateri was born in the Mohawk village of Ossernenon (now Auriesville, New York) in 1656. She was known for her purity and, when at age 19 she converted to Catholicism, she took a vow of virginity, to give herself in marriage to Jesus Christ alone. Her family and tribe ridiculed her for this and for her faith and tried to force her to marry. She eventually escaped to Quebec in order to avoid the persecution and died in 1680 at the young age of 24. Having had a great reputation for sanctity during her lifetime, people began to pray for Kateri s intercession shortly after her death. Her reputation for sanctity was confirmed when those prayers were answered by numerous miracles. She was canonized by Pope Benedict XVI in 2012. 40-Hour Devotions Thanks to everyone who participated in the 40-hour prayer vigil in preparation for the Feast of Corpus Christi. Over 100 persons signed up for one or several hours of prayer during that time. Stewardship of Treasure Due to an early bulletin deadline, offertory totals were not available for July 2. They will be in next week s bulletin. The budget is based on a weekly average offertory of $15,942.00 per week. Thank you for your continued support of our parish.
