Music of the Mass Messa de Cappella a Quattro Voci (1641) Claudio Monteverdi (1567-1647) Cantate Domino Claudio Monteverdi (1567-1647) O Domine Jesu Christe Giovanni Gabrielli (1553-1612) For further information about the music at today s mass, please take a copy of our music bulletin, High Notes, High Church, which can be found in the corridor and in St Cross Hall. Introit - Sung by the Choir Cantate Domino canticum novum, Cantate et benedicite nomini ejus: Quia mirabilia fecit. Sing to the Lord a new song, Sing and give praise to his name: for he has done marvellous deeds. Cantate Domino Claudio Monteverdi (1567-1647) Entrance Hymn - Sung by Dear Lord and Father of Mankind Hymnal 353 THE ORDER OF MASS In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit.

Almighty God, unto whom all hearts be open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of thy Holy Spirit that we may perfectly love thee, and worthily magnify thy holy name; through Christ our Lord. Amen. Our Lord Jesus Christ said: Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God is one Lord; and thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength. This is the first commandment. And the second is like, namely this: Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets. Lord have mercy upon us, and write all these Thy laws in our hearts, we beseech Thee. Kyrie Eleison - Sung by the Choir Κyrie Eleison Christe Eleison Kyrie Eleison Lord, have mercy Christ, have mercy Lord, have mercy Gloria in Excelsis - Sung by

Collect for the First Sunday after Trinity s

Collect for the Twenty Fourth Sunday After Trinity O Lord, we beseech thee, absolve thy people from their offences; that through thy bountiful goodness we may all be delivered from the bands of those sins, which by our frailty we have committed: Grant this, O heavenly Father, for Jesus Christ s sake, our blessed Lord and Saviour. Amen. Old Testament Lesson Seek ye the Lord while he may be found, call ye upon him while he is near: let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the Lord, and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon. For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts. For as the rain cometh down, and the snow from heaven, and returneth not thither, but watereth the earth, and maketh it bring forth and bud, that it may give seed to the sower, and bread to the eater: so shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it. Isaiah 55 v. 6-11

Gradual Psalm LORD, thou art become gracious unto thy land: thou hast turned away the captivity of Jacöb. Thou hast forgiven the offence of thy people : and covered all_their sïns. Thou hast taken away all thy displeasure : and turned thyself from thy wrathful in_digna-tion. Turn us then, O God our Saviour : and let thine anger cease_from üs. Wilt thou be displeased at us for ever : and wilt thou stretch out thy wrath from one generation to another? Wilt thou not turn again, and quicken us : that thy people may rejoice_in thëe? Shew us thy mercy, O Lord : and grant us thy_salva-tion. New Testament Lesson Psalm 85 v. 1-7 We give thanks to God and the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, praying always for you, since we heard of your faith in Christ Jesus, and of the love which ye have to all the saints, for the hope which is

laid up for you in heaven, whereof ye heard before in the word of the truth of the gospel; which is come unto you, as it is in all the world; and bringeth forth fruit, as it doth also in you, since the day ye heard of it, and knew the grace of God in truth: as ye also learned of Epaphras our dear fellowservant, who is for you a faithful minister of Christ; who also declared unto us your love in the Spirit. For this cause we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to desire that ye might be filled with the knowledge of his will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding; that ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God; strengthened with all might, according to his glorious power, unto all patience and longsuffering with joyfulness; giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light. Colossians 1 v. 3-12 Gradual Liberasti nos, Domine, ex affligentibus nos: et eos qui nos oderunt confudisti. It is thou, O Lord, that savest us from our enemies and puttest them to confusion that hate us. Gospel Acclamation He maketh peace within thy borders: and filleth thee with the flour of wheat.

The Gospel The Lord be with you: And with thy spirit. A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Matthew: Glory be to thee, O Lord. While he spake these things unto them, behold, there came a certain ruler, and worshipped him, saying, My daughter is even now dead: but come and lay thy hand upon her, and she shall live. And Jesus arose, and followed him, and so did his disciples. And, behold, a woman, which was diseased with an issue of blood twelve years, came behind him, and touched the hem of his garment: for she said within herself, If I may but touch his garment, I shall be whole. But Jesus turned him about, and when he saw her, he said, Daughter, be of good comfort; thy faith hath made thee whole. And the woman was made whole from that hour. And when Jesus came into the ruler s house, and saw the minstrels and the people making a noise, he said unto them, Give place: for the maid is not dead, but sleepeth. And they laughed him to scorn. But when the people were put forth, he went in, and took her by the hand, and the maid arose. And the fame hereof went abroad into all that land. Matthew 9 v. 18-26 This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise be to thee, O Christ.

Sermon Close But No Cigar The Principal Nicene Creed - Sung by

Intercessions The Sub-deacon leads the congregation in the intercessions for the Church and the world. The response to each bidding is Hear our prayer. Confession The Celebrant invites the people to confess their sins, kneeling: Almighty God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, maker of all things, judge of all men: we acknowledge and bewail our manifold sins and wickedness, which we, from time to time, most grievously have committed, by thought, word and deed, against thy divine majesty, provoking most justly thy wrath and indignation against us. We do earnestly repent, and are heartily sorry for these our misdoings; the remembrance of them is grievous unto us; the burden of them is intolerable. Have mercy upon us, have mercy upon us, most merciful Father; for thy Son our Lord Jesus Christ s sake, forgive us all that is past; and grant that we may ever hereafter serve and please thee in newness of life, to the honour and glory of thy name; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. The Celebrant pronounces the Absolution to which all respond: Amen. The Peace The peace of the Lord be always with you. And with thy spirit. Offertory Sentence - Sung by the Choir Out of the deep have I called unto thee O Lord : Lord hear my voice.

Offertory Hymn - Sung by Rock of Ages Hymnal 445 Prayer over the Gifts Pray, brethren, that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable unto God, the Father almighty: May the Lord accept the sacrifice at thy hands, for the praise and glory of his Name, for our good and the good of all his holy Church. The Celebrant prays a Collect. reply: Amen The Eucharistic Prayer The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit. Lift up your hearts. We lift them up unto the Lord. Let us give thanks unto our Lord God. It is meet and right so to do. The Proper Preface follows, which leads into the Sanctus and Benedictus: Sanctus, sanctus, sanctus Dominus Deus Sabaoth. Pleni sunt caeli et terra Gloria tua. Hosanna in Excelsis. Benedictus qui venit in nomine Domini: Hosanna in Excelsis. Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God of Hosts, Heaven and earth are full of thy glory. Glory be to thee O Lord most high. Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord: Hosanna in the highest. At the conclusion of the Eucharistic Prayer all sing: Amen.

The Lord s Prayer - Sung by As our Saviour Christ hath commanded and taught us, we are bold to say: Agnus Dei - Sung by the Choir Agnus Dei qui tollis peccata mundi: Miserere nobis. Agnus Dei qui tollis peccata mundi: Miserere nobis. Agnus Dei qui tollis peccata mundi: Dona nobis pacem. O Lamb of God, that takest away the sin of the world: have mercy upon us. O Lamb of God, that takest away the sin of the world: have mercy upon us. O Lamb of God, that takest away the sin of the world: grant us thy peace.

Invitation to Communion Behold the Lamb of God, behold Him that taketh away the sins of the world: blessed are those who are called to the supper of the Lamb. Lord, I am not worthy that thou shouldst come under my roof: but speak the word only, and my soul shall be healed. Communion Sentence - Sung by the Choir Amen dico vobis, quidquid orantes petitis credite quia accipietis et fiet vobis. Verily I say unto you, what things soever ye desire when ye pray: believe that ye receive them and it shall be done unto you Distribution of Communion Please come forward to kneel or stand if you are unable. The Church of England welcomes communicant members of all Churches who have been baptized with water in the Name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, to receive Holy Communion in faith, hope and charity. Lord Jesus Christ, I worship you, who was wounded on the cross and given gall and vinegar to drink: I pray that your wounds may be a remedy for my soul. O Domine Jesu Christe Giovanni Gabrielli (1553-1612)

Communion Hymn O For a Closer Walk Hymnal 414 The Celebrant prays the Post-Communion Prayer, to which all reply: Amen Almighty God, we thank thee for feeding us with the body and blood of thy Son Jesus Christ. Through him we offer thee our souls and bodies to be a living sacrifice. Send us out in the power of thy Spirit to live and work to thy praise and glory. Amen. Blessing and Dismissal The Lord be with you: And with thy spirit. The God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ Jesus, establish, strengthen and settle you in the faith; and the blessing of God Almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be amongst you and remain with you always. Amen. Go in the peace of Christ: Thanks be to God. Recessional Hymn Come thou fount of every blessing See Next Page

1. Come, Thou Fount of every blessing, Tune my heart to sing Thy grace; Streams of mercy, never ceasing, Call for songs of loudest praise. Teach me some melodious sonnet, Sung by flaming tongues above. Praise the mount, I m fixed upon it, Mount of Thy redeeming love. 2. Sorrowing I shall be in spirit, Till released from flesh and sin, Yet from what I do inherit, Here Thy praises I'll begin; Here I raise my Ebenezer;* Here by Thy great help I ve come; And I hope, by Thy good pleasure, Safely to arrive at home. 5. O that day when freed from sinning, I shall see Thy lovely face; Clothèd then in blood washed linen How I ll sing Thy sovereign grace; Come, my Lord, no longer tarry, Take my ransomed soul away; Send thine angels now to carry Me to realms of endless day. 3. Jesus sought me when a stranger, Wandering from the fold of God; He, to rescue me from danger, Interposed His precious blood; How His kindness yet pursues me Mortal tongue can never tell, Clothed in flesh, till death shall loose me I cannot proclaim it well. 4. O to grace how great a debtor Daily I m constrained to be! Let Thy goodness, like a fetter, Bind my wandering heart to Thee. Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it, Prone to leave the God I love; Here s my heart, O take and seal it, Seal it for Thy courts above. Music: Nettleton Anon. c.18 th American Words: Robert Robinson (1735-1790)

The Angelus The Angel of the Lord brought glad tidings to Mary: And she concieved by the Holy Ghost. Hail Mary full of grace, the Lord is with thee: Blessed art thou amongst women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now, and at the hour of our death. Amen. Behold the handmaid of the Lord: Be it unto me according to thy word. Hail Mary And the word was made flesh: And dwelt among us. Hail Mary Pray for us, O Holy Mother of God: That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ. Music: attrib. Philip Ursell (sometime Principal of the House) The Priest then recites a Collect to which all respond: Amen. Organ Voluntary Please leave quietly or remain seated for the Organ Voluntary Everyone is invited to join us for drinks in the Ursell Room following the mass.

Volunteers Wanted for SWEP (Severe Weather Emergency Protocol) We are looking for volunteers to help with an emergency night shelter for homeless people in Oxford, for when the temperature drops to zero for three successive nights. The shelter will be at New Road Baptist Church, in Bonn Square. Pusey House is helping to coordinate this provision and so we are appealing for people who could work either: during the day to set up, the evening 7.00 10.00, overnight 10.00 6.00 or morning 6.00 8.00. SWEP could happen at any time and so we are looking for a large pool of volunteers to ensure that we have enough volunteers to cover these shifts. Volunteers will be contacted by telephone on the day, and training will be given. This is a challenging but also exciting opportunity to show God s love to the poorest of our city. If you are interested in helping, or just want to know more, please contact: April at parish.manager@smng.org.uk, 01865 240940, or James at pusey.chapel@stx.ox.ac.ukletting them know your contact telephone number. Chamber Organ: Pusey House is grateful for the use of the chamber organ (built by William Church in 1980), on loan this term from the Faculty of Music. We would like to offer a special thanks to Professor Michael Burden, Chair of Faculty, Dr Owen Rees, and the Provost and Fellows of Queen s College Vulgate Group: A few members of the community are interested in resurrecting the Vulgate reading group. We would meet one evening per week for some Latin, cheese and wine.
