Page Four December 16, 2018 Rejoice! The Lord is Near! Today we celebrate Gaudete Sunday, Gaudete is Latin for Rejoice and we rejoice because Christmas day is almost here. The first and second readings for today tell us to rejoice four times. But why all this rejoicing? Because the Lord is in our midst! Even though we are half-way to Christmas day, it is not too late to change our hearts to receive Jesus. In the Gospel today, John the Baptist provides us with perfect examples of ways in which we can do just that when he responds to the crowds who were asking, what then should we do? John the Baptist tells us to share our clothing and food with those who have none, collect only what is fairly due to us and no more, do not extort from others and be satisfied with our wages. Basically, John s message for us is to ACTIVELY participate in the fulfillment of the reign of God in our midst by welcoming and caring for the marginalized and disadvantaged in our midst. The feelings we experience from being the face of Christ to others in our midst is a good reason to REJOICE!! I am so grateful to everyone who responded so generously to our Angel Tree drive in all three parishes. You continue to inspire me with the love and compassion you have for the less fortunate in our area. I am also grateful to all who have been offering to help in any way with preparing our churches for the Christmas season. Thank you. If you were not able to attend the Festival of Carols and Praise at St. Paul Cathedral last Sunday afternoon you missed a wonderful opportunity to be present in a holy space filled with song and praise for the Lord as we sang some of our most beloved Christmas Hymns and opened our hearts to the presence of Jesus Christ in the Eucharist. I have to say that I was so incredibly proud of our Holy Apostles Praise Band and the entire Praise team for providing an outstanding atmosphere of praise and worship and for representing our entire Catholic Community of South Pittsburgh with such love and joy! The Festival of Praise Hospitality Team also did an outstanding job at helping all who entered the cathedral church to feel warmly welcomed. Thanks also to Chef Steve and Signature Servings for providing the reception and cookies afterwards. We are blessed to have Fr. Levi and such a dedicated FOP team who work together to build our community through worship, prayer and praise. When you CHOOSE JOY, you FEEL GOOD and when you feel good, you DO GOOD, and when you do good, it reminds others of what TRUE JOY feel like and it just might INSPIRE THEM to do the same! ~ author unknown Fr Steve Celebrations of Life s Journey Together we welcome: Our sympathy is extended to the families of: Karen Kelly and Irene Kubiak Who were baptized into our Faith & Family. Congratulations to the Parents & Godparents! Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. Baptism preparation training seminars will be held the 2nd Tuesday of each month. If you have not taken the seminar contact Deacon Mike at 412-884-7744 ext. 206 to register. The Pre-Baptism seminars are held in the St. Albert Chapel at 6:30 p.m. Both Mom and Dad should attend and sponsors are welcome. To schedule a Baptism contact Deacon Mike. Page Five Rejoice in the Lord Always The Third Sunday of Advent is a bit different than the others. While violet has been the color we are used to the past few weeks, this week the candle and the vestments are a rose color. These changes signify an increased joy in our hearts on this Sunday which we call Gaudete, which means rejoice! Our joy is increased because we know that our Savior is near, Emmanuel, God is with us. And, yet, a bit of anxiety may also creep in. We may be asking ourselves, are we ready? What must we still do? This is what those in today s Gospel were asking John the Baptist. His response? Be generous. Be honest. Don t cheat others. As Christmas draws ever nearer, there may be lots of things that distract us from what the Lord truly desires of us this time of year. God wants us to rejoice today, and all days, in freedom of heart so that we may share our gifts and proclaim the good news of God dwelling among us and in us. These lessons can also serve us well as we journey On Mission for The Church Alive! and recognize God at work in the hearts of sisters and brothers in faith. Rejoice! The Lord is near! Let the peace of God guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. REJOICE! Today has traditionally been called Gaudete Sunday. The Latin tag is derived from Paul s appeal in the second reading to rejoice always in the Lord, and the Latin Mass text based on that reading. The irony and paradox of this Christian joy is underlined by the fact that Paul wrote those words in prison. But from there he could see the progress of God s work. Is it obvious to us? We feel that this is not the time for joy when there is so much suffering and moral evil. It is interesting, then, that the first reading is from the prophet Zephaniah, who is almost exclusively concerned with gloomy visions of Judgment Day. Today the Church selects the only optimistic text in Zephaniah, in which the prophet has been touched by the spirit of joy. This, we are assured on all sides, is the season of joy. Let us recapture that feeling of joy in our lives and reflect it to those who are joyless. The Parish Offices will close on Monday, December 24th at noon and will reopen on Wednesday, January 2, 2019 at noon.

Come to Me Saturday January 12, 2019 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm The theme for January s Festival of Praise will be based on the scripture passage Philippians 2: 5-11 where Saint Paul tells us that, although Jesus was God, he humbled himself and became obedient unto death -- the supreme servant. This celebration will be based on Jesus, and helping individuals to encounter him. We welcome back Father Tom Galvin who will join us as presider and inspirational speaker. Father Tom is quite often a favorite speaker at the Magnificat Breakfasts sponsored by Magnificat Pittsburgh. Check out the Festival of Praise page in the Holy Apostles Parish website for information about this celebration of Jesus. There you will find many pictures and videos of previous services. The Catholic Community of South Pittsburgh THE DEACON S CORNER At this season of joy and hope, we have many in our parish who have lost someone to drug addiction which appears to be a curse in our city and country at this time. Some of you have indicated that you are struggling with your loss at this Christmas season. With that said we have found a support group for those that have lost a loved one from addiction. This group meets at St. Louise de Marillac on the first and third Monday of each month from 7:00 to 8:30. They meet in the conference room. The meeting is facilitated by Glenn Phillips. It is my understanding that they also have a professional counselor if there is further need. In addition to this we as a community have an opportunity at this time of year to support these members in our Advent prayers. Prayer for a grieving family Abba Father, You hold time within your hands, and see it all, from beginning to end. Please keep and carry these precious people in their sadness and loss. Cover them with your great wings of love, give their weary hearts rest and their minds sound sleep. Lord, lift their eyes so that they may catch a glimpse of eternity, and be comforted by your promise of eternal life. We ask all this in the precious name of Jesus. Amen. Deacon Mike In Christ: We Are One, We Are Sent MARCH FOR LIFE~BUS TRIP Deacon Tim is organizing a bus trip for the 2019 March for Life, which will take place on Friday, January 18th in Washington, DC. If you are interested in more information on this bus trip, contact Deacon Tim at deacontim@verizon.net. Since the 1973 Supreme Court cases, Roe v. Wade and Doe v. Bolton, which legalized abortion-on-demand in our country, over 60 million lives have been lost to abortion. Ending abortion and promoting a culture of life is why we march each year. Deacon Tim is trying to determine which size bus to reserve for our group. If you are interested in joining us, please contact him. If you cannot join us, please pray for our safety on the trip and for the end to abortion.
