January 8, 2017 11:00 a.m. * If you are able, please stand Latecomers seated WELCOME G ATHERING PRELUDE Pastorale in F:Movt. II J. S. Bach * CALL TO WORSHIP There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God; The holy habitation of the Most High. The Lord pours forth rivers from the dry mountains, and fountains of living water in the deepest, darkest valleys. God opens rocks, and water gushes out. In a dry and thirsty land, God makes streams to flow. In the dry deserts of our lives, God s living water is flowing with grace, justice, and love. * HYMN Jesus Shall Reign Where er the Sun GG 265 CALL TO CONFESSION DUKE STREET PRAYER OF CONFESSION Sovereign God, in baptism you called us to turn from sin and to turn to Jesus Christ; but we stray from his ways and do not heed your call. (Silence) Lord, have mercy. Christ, have mercy. In baptism you joined us to Christ in his death that we might be raised with Christ in new life; continued next page 3

but we cherish old ways and fail to embrace the risen life of righteousness, justice, and love. (Silence) Lord, have mercy. Christ, have mercy. In baptism you united us with all the baptized who confess your name; but we foster division in the church. We refuse to live as one people, and so fail to witness to your reconciling love before the world. (Silence) Lord, have mercy. Christ, have mercy. In baptism you sent us to serve with compassion all for whom Christ died; but we ignore the suffering of the oppressed and the plight of the poor. We take bread from the hungry, and stop our ears to cries for justice. (Silence) Lord, have mercy. Christ, have mercy. In baptism you gave us the Holy Spirit to teach and guide us but we rely on ourselves and refuse to trust your direction. We spurn your eternal wisdom, preferring, instead, the luring ways of the world. (Silence) Lord, have mercy. continued next page 4

Christ, have mercy. Lord, have mercy on us. Remember the promises you made to us in baptism, forgive our sinful ways and heal our brokenness. Set us free from all that enslaves us, and raise us to new life in Jesus Christ, that we may be your faithful servants, showing forth your healing love to the world, to the glory of your holy name. Amen. ASSURANCE OF FORGIVENESS Friends, hear and believe the good news that comes from God. In Jesus Christ we are forgiven! * CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE Praise, I Will Praise You, Lord GG 628, VS. 1 * THE PEACE The peace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with you. And also with you. Greet those around you, saying Peace be with you or The Peace of Christ If you prefer not to shake hands in greeting while passing the Peace of Christ, you may choose to make eye contact and greet others in another personal way. T HE W ORD CHILDREN S MEDITATION Following the Children s Meditation, children age 4 through grade 2 are invited to meet Allison Lineberger in the Narthex for Sermon Stories. Children will return to the Sanctuary for worship with their parents following the sermon. PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION SCRIPTURE Isaiah 42:1-9 OT p. 670 Matthew 3:13-17 NT p. 3 5

I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. Do you believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God? I believe in Jesus Christ, God s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit? I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. * THANKSGIVING FOR BAPTISM 6
