www.crownoflifechurch.org Life @ crown SEPTEMBER 2015, ISSUE 9 Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord. Psalm 127:3 Thank you VBS Volunteers! V BS 2015 was a huge success! We had thirty-one volunteers throughout the week and over 55 children attended. That is a very high staff volunteer to student ratio. The children really had fun and excitement all week. Over 100 children and family members attended the picnic on Friday and almost 125 hotdogs were served! A thank you shout out goes to: Lottie Bachelard, Swapna Bagchi, Kathy Bellow, Jen Domulewicz, Abby & Daniel Fallon, Cindy Gabriel, Ben, Kristi, Mark & Sofie Gugel, Tammy Hartmann, Kohl s, Judy Mann, Shannon Michie, Patti Peterson, Cat, Mary, Mindy & Nick Purcell, Aiden, Cole, & Melissa Rochford, Anita Shore, Bella Thomas, Denise Trevarrow, Brad & Kath Wireman, Jan VanWulfen, Juliet, Ross, & Hansen Keaton. We also want to thank all of the people who made donations to help support the program. We love YOU!! T he Brooksie Way HealthPlus Half Marathon is scheduled for Sunday morning, September 27, rendering access to Crown virtually impossible during worship hour. Church volunteers who would like to hand out water to runners should gather in the church parking lot at 7 am. We need approximately 15 20 volunteers to sign up from Crown. Contact Danelle Bieniek at 248-340-0879 if you want to help. Danelle will also need your T-shirt size by September 6. The official website is www.thebrooksieway.com An informal outdoor service will be held after the marathon (sweaty runners and volunteers welcome!). The faithful of Crown are invited to gather for lunch at Noon and the service will begin at 1 pm. We will sing hymns of praise, hear scripture and a homily. Capital Campaign

CHURCH & COMMUNITY Sunday Service added at 11 am C rown of Life Lutheran Church exists to serve our members and community. We should be focused on reaching out to others with the message of salvation in Christ, and frankly we must grow for long term survival. Study and prayer lead us to believe an 11 am service meets our objective of reaching others. This is not without consequences, for limited resources lead us to drop the Saturday service.* Sunday morning Bible study will still be taught while the children are in their Sunday School classes. Our 9:30 am service will remain unchanged. Please pray for God s blessing on the changes! If it fits your schedule, please come at 11 am to establish a nucleus of worshippers. Consider ushering or assisting in the tech booth. *The last Saturday service was August 29. Reverend Dietrick Gladden, St. Paul Lutheran Church, leads the blessing before the meal. Crown serves dinner at St. Paul C rown of Life members served a wonderful dinner at St. Paul s on August 5th. The meal consisted of not just any pork chops but stuffed pork chops, mashed potatoes, corn and to top it off, some gravy. It was a pretty good turnout and people were happy to hear that they could have seconds Even better, for dessert there were cream puffs and everyone enjoyed those, So, the night ended with the Crown of Life staff packing meals and the children of St. Paul s playing games. Catherine Purcell For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another. Galatians 5:13

WHO S WHO AT CROWN Meet Kristi Gugel K risti (Schury) Gugel grew up in Frankenmuth Michigan. Her Father was a Doctor with a general practice and her Mother was a homemaker and office accountant for her father. Kristi has an older sister and younger brother. She received her Associate degree in Fine Arts at Northwestern Michigan College and her Bachelors of Science majoring in Communications and Photography at Grand Valley State College. She worked as a commercial industrial photographer for a few years and then decided to work on a Mechanical Engineering Degree at Michigan Technological University. She then met up with Mark, 13 years later after high school graduation. (he's a Frankenmuther also.) They were married in 1993 and since then have lived in East Lansing, Sterling Heights, Shelby Twp., Fischbach and Kelkheim, Germany, and Rochester Hills. She has 3 children; Maximilian, Benjamin, Sophia and a dog Nina. Kristi owns her own photography business. She has had clients all over the state of Michigan and throughout Germany. She enjoys photographing weddings, families, children, and pets. Her favorite things to do is travel and explore new places with her family, kayak and of course, photography. Contribute to the needs of the saints and seek to show hospitality. Romans 12:13 Visitors to Sunday Service C rown recently welcomed couples visiting a Sunday service. New people occasionally attend service as they search for a new place of worship or just to try something different. We all know how that feels because that s what we did at one time. Please say hello and make them feel welcome. Try to be sure they have a great experience with us. Rick and Karen Hart Dominic Alessio and Julianna Bilowus

PRESCHOOL Announcing! Crown of Life Preschool Opening Day September 16, 2015! Congratulations! Crown Preschool coming to life O ur wonderful preschool staff! Director, Mary Tessmer and her teacher s aide, Becky Safran. They have worked extremely hard to put the school together for Crown. It has been a huge job and has come together so well. We are very proud of you. Thank you very much! Play furniture needed O ur preschool director, Mary Tessmer, is in need of a large molded plastic picnic table and children s indoor play table with 4 chairs (large enough for 4-5 year olds) for the preschool. She has asked the congregation if anyone is aware of these items being available from a friend, family member, or neighbor and would they consider donating them to the new preschool. A few more finishing touches are needed. Please call Mary T. or Pastor if you can help. Sometimes dirt is a good thing! D irt means progress at Crown of Life Church. Tradesmen were busy measuring, plowing, digging, and drilling to meet their deadline. The preschool playground structure needs to be ready for opening day this month. Teachers, parents and students are all anxious to be starting school. Crown preschool will serve the pre 3 s and pre 4 s with a Christ centered curriculum. FYI...You can download registration packets from the Crown of Life Lutheran Church Website: crownoflifechurch.org Or visit www.facebook.com/crownoflifepreschool for

EDUCATION MINISTRY You are built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus Himself being the cornerstone. Ephesians 2:19-20. Planning for Christian Education P astor Lemley and Christian education volunteers met to review the schedule and make plans for the 2015/16 Sunday school and Confirmation calendar year. The Growing in Christ curriculum from Concordia Publishing is focused on the theme God protects His people in Egypt and the Exodus. You are invited to meet the teachers and attend the Rally picnic on September 13. A total of 34 classes are scheduled through June 12, 2016. Dates are based on the Rochester Community Schools calendar. Rally Day Picnic September 13 W e love to eat so families are invited to a Rally Day picnic on Sunday, September 13. It is the official 2015/16 kick off date for Sunday School and Confirmation classes. Teachers have their new instruction materials and they plan for another great year. Parents and children are all invited to the 9:30 am service that day. Sunday school will immediately follow worship. They will meet their teachers for orientation at that time and then will join their parents for the picnic either on the north lawn or inside if it s raining. Parents who plan to worship at 11 am should plan to come early. We will resume meeting at 11 am for all classes (including adult Bible study) on September 20. Family - a prayer This is a prayer from the Lutheran Prayer book written by Reverend R. H. Raasch. O h Lord, I thank You for my family. You have created our lives and intentionally brought us together to live in our home. It is within the family relationship that we learn how to share Your gifts of love, forgiveness, and mercy. It is here, in our home, that we learn to be patient, as You are patient; compassionate, as You are compassionate; and caring, as You care for us. Bless our relationships that we may serve You here in our home and when we go out into Your world. In the mighty name of Jesus we pray. Amen.

EDUCATION MINISTRY Lead me in your truth and teach me, for you are the God of my salvation; for you I wait all the day long. Psalm 25:5 New study series for teens at crown E ach week this fall, the post Confirmation Sunday school class will be watching something really different. It is a video series called Drive Thru History The Holy Land. The host, Dave Stotts, drives through the Holy Land in a Fiat. Along the way, he talks about the culture of the people (both Biblical and modern times), visits the sites of Bible events and tells many interesting historical facts about the areas where he visits. He has a very good sense of humor and you can tell he is really enjoying the journey. There are twelve episodes in the series. Each week we will watch one episode and then we will have some time to discuss it. Anyone who has completed Confirmation class is welcome. We meet in the youth lounge downstairs. We hope you can join us! Kathy Bellow Look and Live! H ow beautiful is the world we live in: woods, fields, and water; animals, fish, and birds; the clouds, the sky, and stars! Especially in the summer, I am drawn outside to enjoy the verdant nature trails, the abundance of the garden, and the vast panorama of the night sky. At the end of the day, I ponder how splendid a campfire is, and its sparks lead my eye upwards to search for the Milky Way. I can t comprehend how everything in the universe continues to work together. How did God do that? He had all rules for the entire universe in place from Day One. I can almost hear space proclaiming God s great works to my earthbound ears. Nature has power to awe, leading humans to seek the God who made it. But because of our sin, we are blind to God s love and even His existence. Creation points to the Creator but lacks the words to tell us the rest of the story; so God sent His Son, the Living Word, to teach us and save us from sin. We marvel at the life in all of nature; and we find extremal life through Jesus Christ in the Holy Scriptures. Portals of Prayer July September 2015

CHURCH & COMMUNITY Christmas Set up Begins for GFAGC T he tables, racks and shelves have been set up in the two rooms that GFAGC are renting to have the "Christmas Workshop" in this year. This give us a new opportunity, to have the set up spread out over several months instead of just the several weeks in November. If you can begin helping us with this process please mark your calendar for Wednesday, September 23rd, Wednesdays October 14th and 28th. These will be our first scheduled work days to start putting out all the clothing and toys. We will work from 9-1 p.m. each day. Come and give as much time as you can spare. When finished we can go to lunch if anyone is interested. There is a signup sheet in the narthex. See Judy Mann with questions. Living Word Lutheran Church is just past the corner of Gunn and Rochester Roads (approx. 3 miles north of Orion Rd.) Thank you! Golf Outing An Ecumenical and Interfaith Golf outing is scheduled for Friday, September 18 at the Rackham Golf Course in Huntington Woods (next to the Detroit Zoo). Pre - register at www.etseminary.edu by September 4 or at 12:30 pm 9/18/15. $100 fee. A little Church Humor O ne Sunday morning, a preacher told his congregation, "Everyone who wants to go to heaven, come down to the front!" The whole church came forward except one man. Thinking that maybe the man hadn't heard him, the preacher repeated the invitation. Again, the man just sat there. "Sir," said the preacher, "don't you want to go to heaven when you die? The man replied, Oh, when I die! I thought you were getting a group ready to go right now.
