BOMBARDE! Newsletter of The Greater Kansas City Chapter AMERICAN GUILD OF ORGANISTS VOL. 0607, NO. 6 MARCH 2007 From Our Chapter Dean For lo, the winter is past, the rain is over and gone; the flowers appear on the earth; the time of the singing of birds is come. Spring is coming! I think we are all glad to experience warmer temperatures, and anticipate the beauty of the earth s renewal. I hope you were able to attend our February meeting and enjoy the recital provided by Dr. David Pickering of Graceland University, Music From the Heart. His program featured the music of composer Alice Jordan. Ms. Jordan s compositions for organ and instruments lend themselves to both service music and recital by organists with a variety of skill levels. We offer our appreciation to Dr. Pickering, and also to Dr. Richard Anderson who graciously assisted for the lovely Aria for Oboe and Organ. Thank you to Faith Lutheran Church, Jan Van Otterloo (Principal Organist), and their entire staff for hosting our meeting. March 19 th finds us at Country Club Christian Church for a program of Classical Jewish Music presented by Carlene Neihart, Tom Atkin, David Diebold, soloists, instrumentalists, choirs, and organ. We assure you that this will be a unique opportunity to experience beautiful music that we ordinarily would not have the occasion to hear. A poster for this event is accessible on our website and enclosed in the printed Bombarde. Our April event is being sponsored by AGO National Headquarters. We have had many questions regarding this, thus a brief history: Established in 1994, the Endowment Fund provides income to expand programs for leadership development among AGO members; educate new organists; and cultivate new audiences for organ and choral music. Tax-deductible contributions to the Endowment Fund are invested in perpetuity to produce continuing income support for essential Guild programs and educational projects. The AGO Gala was organized as a benefit for the AGO Endowment Fund. Past AGO Gala s honored Marie-Claire Alain (New York City, 2002), Judith and Gerre Hancock (New York City, 2004), David Craighead (Philadelphia, 2006), and this year, Dr. John Obetz is being honored in Kansas City on Sunday, April 15th. We are privileged to be invited to participate in this honor bestowed upon our friend and colleague. Please plan to attend the recitals at Community of Christ International Headquarters in Independence, MO which will begin at 3 p.m. at the Auditorium, and will continue at 4 p.m. at the Temple. The recitals are free to the public; a free-will offering will be taken. At 6 p.m., the AGO National Council will hold a Gala Reception at the Plaza Marriott, which will benefit the national AGO Endowment Fund. All the national officers from New York will be in attendance. Tickets for this event are $100.00, ($75.00 of which is tax-deductible) and need to be ordered from AGO National Headquarters by phone (212-870-2311, ext. 4308) e-mail gala@agohq.org or online at www.agohq.org. The names of those attending will be published in the program booklet. This national AGO-sponsored event takes the place of our usual local, Greater Kansas City Chapter, Monday evening event for the month of April. A letter to our members from Frederick Swann, President of National AGO can be found on our <kcago.com> website. Please refer to it for further details. We hope that you will plan now to attend these events and support the AGO National Endowment Fund. Nan Hulett Dean

From National Headquarters To the Members of the Greater Kansas City AGO Chapter, Greetings: We invite you to join us for a very special event. The AGO will honor our dear friend and respected colleague, John Obetz, with a Recital and Gala Benefit Reception on Sunday, April 15, 2007. The Recital will begin at 3 p.m. and feature the two world-renowned organs at the Community of Christ International Headquarters in Independence, Mo. The (1959) IV/113 rank Æolian-Skinner in the Auditorium, well known from the 26 years it was heard in Obetz s weekly radio broadcast, and the (1993) IV/102 rank Casavant just across the street in the church s Temple. The Gala Benefit Reception will follow at the Marriott Country Club Plaza in Kansas City. All proceeds will go to the AGO Endowment Fund in John Obetz s honor. John Obetz has been one of America s most widely heard organists. From 1967 to 1998, he was denominational Principal Organist for the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (now Community of Christ) in Independence, Mo., from where thousands of listeners heard his weekly half-hour recital, The Auditorium Organ, via satellite broadcast. He served as adjunct associate professor of music at the University of Missouri Kansas City until his retirement in 2005. An active member of the AGO, Dr. Obetz served on the AGO National Council for 19 years, most recently as Treasurer and member of the Development Committee. He is a generous and faithful supporter of the American Guild of Organists and of our mission. Performers will be John Obetz, Frederick Swann, Janet Kraybill, T. Jared Stellmacher, and the choir of Grace and Holy Trinity Cathedral. American Public Media s Pipedreams host Michael Barone will serve as master of ceremonies. Admission is free. A free-will offering is requested. An elegant reception with cocktails and hors d oeuvres following the recital will provide a special opportunity for those in attendance to share time together in celebration of all that John Obetz means to us. Tickets for the gala reception are $100 per person and must be purchased in advance from AGO National Headquarters. To Attend the Recital and Gala Benefit Reception (PLEASE RESPOND BY APRIL 1)... Order your ticket(s) from AGO National Headquarters by telephone (212-870-2311, ext. 4308), e-mail <gala@agohq.org>, or online at <www.agohq.org>. The cost is $100 per person ($75 tax-deductible). The names of those attending will be published in the souvenir program book. Information about hotel accommodations and transportation between the hotel and the Community of Christ complex will be included with your ticket. If You Are Unable to Attend the Gala... We will miss you! Please consider making a contribution to the AGO Endowment Fund in John Obetz s honor. Your contribution will be 100% tax deductible to the fullest extent provided by law. Gifts in all amounts are welcome and encouraged. A return envelope is enclosed for your check or credit card contribution. All contributions will be acknowledged in THE AMERICAN ORGANIST Magazine. Established in 1994, the AGO Endowment Fund provides income to expand programs for leadership development among AGO members; educate new organists; and cultivate new audiences for organ and choral music. Tax-deductible contributions to the Endowment Fund are invested in perpetuity to produce continuing income support for essential Guild programs and educational projects.
