Pope Francis has urged faithful to stop looking at our phones, and instead really encounter and listen to one another. According to Vatican Radio, the Pontiff gave this advice during his daily morning Mass at Casa Santa Marta, as he warned against bad habits that prevent us, even within our families, from truly listening to others and empathizing with them. Overcoming Our Indifference As the Jesuit Pontiff drew inspiration from Gospel reading where Jesus brought back from the dead the only son of a widow, Francis highlighted that an encounter with Jesus overcomes our indifference. He also lamented that often when people meet each other, each of them is thinking of themselves, they can see the other person but are not looking at him or her, they can hear that person but are not listening to him or her. In the Gospel, the Pope continued, we read that Jesus was moved with pity. When Christ observed something unfortunate, Francis pointed out, he encounters and reacts, never remaining indifferent. While if we see something sad, we say what a shame! Jesus doesn t pass by, he is moved with pity. He goes up to the woman for a real encounter and then performs the miracle. Restoring Dignity The Pope, reflecting on this Gospel encounter said, we not only see his tenderness but also the fruitfulness of that encounter that restores people and things to their proper place. We are accustomed to a culture of indifference and we must strive and ask for the grace to create a culture of encounter, of a fruitful encounter, of an encounter that restores to each person his or her own dignity as a child of God, the dignity of a living person. Even in Our Families The message from today s reading, said Pope Francis, stems from that encounter between Jesus and his people and we all are in need of his Word and need that encounter with Him. In our families, at the dinner table, how many times while eating, do people watch the TV or write messages on their cell phones. Each one is indifferent to that encounter. Even within the heart of society, which is the family, there is no encounter. May this help us to strive for this culture of encounter, just as simply as Jesus did. Fr. James Narithookil, CMI Pastor Jubilee for Catechists Amos castigates religious people who, comfortably complacent (6:1, 5), ignore the unfolding collapse of culture, nation, religion (6:6). In Jesus parable, such complacency becomes the rich man s undoing. He neither hurt nor harmed Lazarus, neither denied him leftovers nor ordered him removed. That is Jesus devastating point. The rich man did nothing wrong to Lazarus; he just did nothing at all good for him. Only in death, separated by a great chasm (Luke 16:26), could the rich man finally see Lazarus, whom he had failed to see in life, right before his eyes. Like the rich man s five brothers still in my father s house (16:27 28), we who are alive in the Church still have time to see that same Someone, Jesus, lying neglected right at our door and time to do something. Who, specifically, concretely, practically, is Lazarus in my life? What can I do for that Jesus-in-the-flesh during this Jubilee Y ear of Mercy? Peter Scagnelli, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

Bible Study A Powerful Study on the Blessed Mother Have you ever wondered why Mary is so important to our faith as Catholics? We turn to her in prayer, in the Mass, in the Rosary, and in Marian devotions. We honor her with special feasts celebrating the significant events in her life. We place images of her in our churches and homes. Join us for an extraordinary study that reveals Mary's unique role in God's Kingdom and in our lives. The Bible and the Virgin Mary is based upon the book Hail, Holy Queen, by Dr. Scott Hahn. It teaches Catholics how Marian doctrine and devotion are firmly rooted in Scripture and answers common objections from non-catholics. St. Mary Parish Sacramento will be hosting this study in the St. Mary School Library (Cabrini Center). Classes began Wednesday, September 7 at 7pm and continuing for 12 sessions (no study on the 2nd Wednesday of each month.) Sessions are 90 minutes in length. Cost is $35 per person. Watch the trailer at www.bibleandthevirginmary.com For more information or to register for the study, call Gwen Devereux at 916-717-8525 or email gwen@devereuxonline.com. You can also register on the St. Mary Parish Sacramento Facebook page! Invite your friends and family! Open to all ages high school and up. Respect Life Committee 40 Days for Life Campaign The Fall 40 Days for Life prayer vigil begins on September 28 in hundreds of cities around the world, including several in our Diocese. Christians will pray and offer assistance on the sidewalk, Monday - Friday, from September 28th to November 6th. This life-saving, peaceful, prayerful ministry is endorsed by Bishop Soto who encourages all Catholics to participate. By God's grace over 11,700 women worldwide have changed their minds, choosing LIFE for their children rather than abortion because of people praying at the sidewalk. The Sacramento vigil will be held at 1442 Ethan Way, along the public sidewalk of the abortion business parking lot on Hallmark Drive, across from the state fairgrounds. Other 40 Days for Life locations within the Diocese of Sacramento include Redding, Chico, Vallejo, and Fairfield. Please visit 40daysforlife.com for more information about each site.
