Be watchful and pray in the midst of frightening events so that you will outlive them and be united with the Son of Man. In short, live in a way that pleases God. Reflect: The good things of promise are not necessarily packaged in attractive envelopes; they often come in the midst of frightening events. This is good news: Even when the world seems to fall apart and the foundations of our lives are shaken, the people of promise who have lived a life good enough to please the Lord do not need to panic: in the midst of such tragedies, something new and good is being born for them. Pray: Pray for the gift of discerning God s blessings even in the midst of trials and struggles. From: Fr. Paulson Veliyannoor, CMF Bible Diary 2018 Claretian Communications Foundation, Inc. FAZtor s Notes by Fr. Arnold Zamora Welcome to the new month of December and the new Liturgical year for the Church. We are now in the last month of the year but we are also on the First Sunday of Advent, the start of the Liturgical Year (C), also known as the New Year of the Church. This is usually the Sunday or weekend that we recommission our Liturgical Ministers and acknowledge their contribution in enhancing the Liturgies in our parish. We will do this at the 11:30 am Mass this weekend. These ministers are good and faithful stewards of our church, generously sharing their time, talent and treasure. On this first day of the month and first weekend of the new year of the church, our parish is offering an Advent Retreat. It is a wonderful start to the year and a great preparation for Christmas. Before we indulge ourselves with physical nourishment from upcoming Christmas parties, it s important to get spiritual nourishment first. We thank Sister Cristina for facilitating this retreat. Next Saturday, December 8 th, is the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin and it is always a Holy Day of Obligation, except in years when December 8 falls on a Sunday and the solemnity is observed on December 9. Therefore, Saturday, December 8, 2018 is a Holy Day of Obligation. We often get asked if Masses count or if a person can satisfy two obligations with one mass. It has been clarified by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) Committee on Divine Worship that when consecutive obligations occur on Saturday-Sunday or Sunday-Monday, the faithful must attend Mass twice to fulfill two separate obligations. Therefore, the people are to attend one mass for the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception (from Friday evening through Saturday the 8 th ), and a Mass for the celebration of the Second Sunday of Advent (From 4pm on the 8 th through Sunday the 9 th.) We usually have a 7PM mass on a Holy Day of Obligation here at Holy Name. But since it is a Saturday, and our 5PM mass is already considered for Sunday, we have added another mass on Friday, December 7 th at 7PM. So, there will still be three masses that are available for you to fulfill your obligation. NICE WORDS are not always true; TRUE WORDS are not always nice. People can't change the truth, but the truth can change people. The truth hurts, but it doesn't kill. A lie pleases, but it doesn't heal. The longer we wait for something, the more we appreciate it when we get it, because anything worth having is definitely worth waiting for. page 3 ACE COLLECTION Today s Second Collection is the ACE Collection for the benefit of our Parish School. Your generosity is very much appreciated by our school children. CHRISTMAS FLOWERS Please drop your Christmas Flowers envelope in the collection baskets starting this weekend. RETIREMENT FUND FOR THE RELIGIOUS Support the Retirement Fund for Religious. A donor writes, Your flyer touched my heart seeing the retired religious, such memories surfaced. Do you remember the sisters, brothers, or religious order priests who made a positive difference in your life? Today many are elderly and need assistance. Their religious communities struggle to meet retirement needs while continuing to serve the People of God. Please give to next week s second collection. FAITH FORMATION CATECHESIS PASTORAL OUTREACH Director: Sr. Cristina Ovejera, FdCC crisfdcc2016@yahoo.com (415)664-8590 REFLECTION: Sparks of Advent Light Christmas is not meant to be simply a day of celebration; it is meant to be a month of contemplation. But because Advent has been lost somewhere between the Thanksgiving turkey and the pre-christmas sales, we have lost one of the richest seasons of he year. Unless we can reclaim Advent, the lack of it will show dearly in the way we go through the rest of life itself. -Sr. Joan Chittister,OSB The desert and the parched land will exult; the steppe will rejoice and bloom. First Week of Advent Rite of Acceptance and Presentation Next weekend marks the Second Sunday of Advent. Candidates for RCIA Catechumenate and for Youth Confirmation of our parish will be presented to our faith community, as they continue their Faith Journey toward Easter. The Rite will be at the 5:00PM Mass on Saturday, December 8 th. The catechumens and candidates and their sponsors will be welcome in this first liturgical rite of the RCIA. The Rite of Acceptance into the catechumenate is the celebration of the inquirers intention to become Catholic and seriously continue the journey of faith toward baptism or full communion with the Church. Please pray for our RCIA and Youth Confirmation groups, catechists, sponsors and families, that they may be open and receptive to the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. O God we thank you for implanting the gift of faith in human hearts. Help them to persevere in their journey of faith despite and difficulties. Call us all to a renewal of faith, and inspire us all to be your light in the world. Amen. Advent Giving Trees It is that time of the year again! On the week of Thanksgiving Day, our Church Environment Committee put up the traditional Advent trees at the back of the church. We filled them with gift tags, each with a wish from the clients of Janet Pomeroy Center. Once again, we ask parishioners to participate in this Advent practice of sharing your treasures with those in need. Thank you in advance for always supporting this outreach program of Holy Name of Jesus. Members of Holy Name Ladies Aid Association will check out tags taken at every Mass. We will begin on Thanksgiving Day, November 22 nd. Thank you for your continuing support of this outreach program. Lay Canossians Hosting Quarterly Homebound/Seniors Mass This will be held on Saturday, December 8, 2018 at 1:30PM in the Flanagan Center. We will celebrate the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception. We will pray the Rosary before Mass. The sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick will be given within the Mass. There will be a simple reception immediately after Mass. Religious Education Teachers and Students and Parents are expected to be at the 9:30AM Mass every Sunday. Please occupy the reserved pews in front of the ambo (podium), left side facing the sanctuary. This is important for everyone to be present, especially to the students preparing for First Holy Communion and Confirmation. Thank you for your cooperation in the Christian formation of your children. Beginning this Pastoral Year, Religious Education students will not join Holy Name School celebration of First Reconciliation, First Holy Communion, Youth Confirmation. They need more time for sacramental preparation, because they only come to catechism classes once a week page 4 HOLY NAME OF JESUS PARISH San Francisco, California MISA DE GALLO (DAWN MASSES) December 16-24, 2018 at 5:30 AM in the Flanagan Center 2018 CHRISTMAS SCHEDULE CHRISTMAS EVE MASSES Monday, December 24, 2018 4:30 PM (Family/Children s Mass) 11:30 PM Christmas Carols (Holy Name Choral Ministry) 12:00 Midnight Concelebrated Mass CHRISTMAS DAY MASSES Tuesday, December 25, 2018 7:30 AM 9:30 AM 11:30 AM NEW YEAR S DAY MASS The Solemnity of Mary, the Holy Mother of God Monday, January 1, 2019 9:00 AM HOLY NAME WEEKLY CALENDAR Week of December 2, 2018 Sunday, Dec 2, 2018 9:00 AM OLM Morning of Prayer Pastoral Center 9:30 AM Holy Name School Mass Church 1:00 PM Lay Canossians Meeting Flanagan Ctr. Simon Jin Time flies by impercep bly; the Chinese Community of Holy Name of Jesus has walked through thirty-six Springs and Autumns! And we look back at the path we traversed with grateful hearts. Despite some difficul es and challenges, this small community has persisted, relying on the special providence of the Lord, and the love, passion and dedica on of the parishioners, the Canossian Sisters, Pastors and Bishop Wang. Let us give praise to the Lord, and let us remember all our benefactors and friends in prayer; we pray that God will bless them abundantly. We also pray that God will con nue to lead us; so that we, with the same enthusiasm, will con nue to bring Christ s Gospel of love to our family and friends, especially to those who have yet to know God, so that they too will share in the promise of the Gospel. To enhance a deeper understanding of Catholicism, and con nue to learn, explore and be inspired by the tradi ons and wisdom of the Chinese culture, for the purpose of living out our faith, the Chinese Community at Holy Name of Jesus is launching a new Chinese column The Fragrance on this first Sunday of the Advent - the start of a new liturgical year. Using the Chinese language to present the various evangeliza on ac vi es of the Chinese Community, we hope we can strengthen the bonds with our parishioners. Through this window, we will present our community life; and sincerely welcome new friends to join us in the pursuance of the truth, to find Christ, and together, living out a fulfilling Chris an life hand in hand. Learning from our past experience and facing with current needs for evangeliza on and service in this neighborhood, our group will work on developing three areas: first, we will strengthen, for fy, and renew the exis ng community page 5 second, we will deepen the interac on and coopera on between Chinese and English groups within our parish; and third, we will progressively develop a home visi ng program called Home Of The Holy Name. More details to come in the subsequent months. Dear brothers and sisters, let us entrust the evangeliza on and service of our Chinese Community in the hands of Almighty God! And by the intercessions of the All Saints and Martyrs of China, we will work together to overcome challenges; so that during our life s pilgrimage toward God, the fragrance and the sacredness of the Holy Name of Jesus will accompany us on our journey. May our prayers rise as incense to God above! Praise and glory to the Holy Name of Jesus! Because of this, God greatly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bend, of those in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father (Philippians 2:9-11).
