From the Religious Education Director Jesus Christ set the example for the perfect catechist. He taught us how to pray and partake in the sacraments. He showed us how to treat others. He revealed true belief and taught us what it means to be his follower. Jesus saved us and lifted us up to God, because God did not expect us to raise ourselves up on our own. The mark of a truly great catechist is one who, like Jesus, comes down to the level of the people and helps lift them up to God. The act of lifting someone up to God changes both lives for the better. Our faith becomes fuller and more engaged. We live out our faith through our works and help spread the good news to others. This is why Catechetical Sunday is such a special time for our parish. The community calls forth our catechists and commissions them to bring all the faithful closer to God. Our parish is fortunate to have approximately eighty catechists this year. They are our teachers engaged with students at Queen of All Saints School each day. They are our Religious Education volunteers who commit their time and talents each week. They are our Children s Liturgy of the Word ministry who share the Gospel message to our youngest parishioners. They are our RCIA team who walk with adults preparing to join our great body of Christ. They are our peer ministers in Youth Ministry who stand as witnesses for fellow teens. They are our SPREAD team who work with the special needs youth. They are our Baptismal Preparation team who prepare parents, new and seasoned, for the baptism of their children. These incredible catechists volunteer themselves, taking their commission to spread the Gospel seriously. They minister to their own families, to the parish family, and the whole body of Christ. By their examples and actions of bringing the good news of Jesus Christ to the children and adults of our community, they help lift all of us up to God. This is a thriving parish that knows and believes that this faith belongs to each of us, at every stage of our life. We are rejoicing this Sunday and welcoming the great works that our catechists give to us. I ask everyone to pray for our catechists today and throughout the year. We pray that they see Christ in each person they teach. We pray the Holy Spirit inspires them and gives them strength. We pray that they be filled with the love of God. Amen. ~ Erika Tate 2 Queen of All Saints Basilica Chicago, IL

The Social Justice Ministry of Queen of All Saints invites you to join us on Sunday, September 23 following the 12:30 p.m. Mass to celebrate The Feast of St. Francis 2018 Who is my neighbor in a climate-threatened world? The feast celebrates St. Francis Assisi who saw all created beings as his brother or sister. Inspired by this example, Catholic Climate Covenant has provided a free educational program to explore how Catholics can better care for creation and the poor. The program is appropriate for junior high school students through adults. For more information please visit catholicclimatecovenant.org. Ministers of Care Each Sunday QAS Ministers of Care serve twenty homebound parishioners and Catholic residents of two nursing homes and we ve just been asked to serve a third. During the past year several of our ministers have had to resign after many years of service. In order to continue serving the number of people we do, we desperately need more ministers. Please consider becoming a minister of care by enrolling in the formational classes at St. Benedicts. Formation Classes: The five-week training for new Ministers of Care who bring Communion to our ill and elderly brothers and sisters each Sunday will begin Wednesday, September 26th. The location again will be Presence St. Benedict Home in Niles. Chaplain Rick Nash and retired priests who live at Presence St. Benedict will be facilitating these classes on five consecutive Wednesday evenings, from 7-9 pm. This program is also open to seasoned Ministers of Care who may wish to attend one or more sessions as continuing formation. For further information or to register, contact Carole Eipers at the Rectory. 8 Queen of All Saints Basilica Chicago, IL

f tewardship Queen of All Saints Basilica Committed to Christ, sharing God's gifts, building the Church together 24th Sunday in Ordinary Time September 16, 2018 Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me. MARK 8:34 When we truly believe that all we have is a gift from God, then we must be willing to give up some things so that we can share our blessings as God intended. Living a stewardship lifestyle means not only being responsible for our own life, but the lives of others as well. Our Capital Campaign Why Are We Doing This? Our Basilica Repair Work Continues We are blessed with a well-built physical plant, but one designed for the parish of the mid-20th century and not for the 21st century, where the church, school and social functions of the parish will be sharply different than before. The former convent, now named the Benedict Center, was an underperforming asset. Its condition was deteriorating, despite continually increasing maintenance costs. Space utilization was improvised over the years, resulting in large amounts of underused or misused space in the Benedict Center, the Lemont Building and the Keene Building. We lack a flexible parish community center, unlike most other parishes today. In general, our proposal was to reallocate and upgrade space within our existing buildings to expand and improve the space for our growing parish life, on a highly costeffective basis especially when compared to new construction, allowing us to wisely steward the gifts of our parish community. Preserving and enhancing our treasured buildings allows us to serve Christ, each other and our world in better ways. Is it time to join your fellow parishioners who have already made the move to electronic giving? It s safe, convenient and dependable. Just go to the parish website at qasparish.org, click on the GiveCentral logo and follow the prompts. Are you receiving our monthly parish newsletter? It s a great way to keep track of the many opportunities in which we can participate in the worship ministries, social activities, and stewardship opportunities of our parish life. If you are not receiving the newsletter, simply send your email address to qasoffice@qasparish.org We began repairs of water damage around the transept windows during the summer, to include replacing the caulk around the storm windows as well as repairs to some of the support rods holding the stained glass windows in place. We also took the opportunity to clean the stained glass windows before reinstallation. We hope you can see the difference now that we removed 60 years of grime! The windows along the side aisles will also require some repairs, which will be scheduled over the next few years. The deteriorated marble behind the side altars has been removed and will be replaced with a modern lightweight replacement material similar to what was used in the sanctuary behind the main altar a few years ago. Currently there is a temporary substitute in place until all exterior stone work is completed. Our biggest current project will be to make masonry repairs to the bell tower, which will begin later this year. If you are a registered parishioner, please come to the rectory during business hours to schedule your child's baptism. If it is not possible for you to come to the rectory, please call the rectory to make arrangements. The Sacrament of Baptism for infants is celebrated two or three Sundays of the month, depending on the time of year, at 1:30pm. Please call the rectory for the exact schedule. A Baptismal Preparation class for the parents is required. They are held once a month on alternate Tuesday and Thursday evenings, and must also be scheduled in advance. If an adult or a school age child seeks baptism, special arrangements should be made with one of the priests. The Sacrament of Matrimony Queen of All Saints helps couples prepare not only for their wedding day, but also for the lifelong commitment of living a Christian marriage. Parishioners of Queen of All Saints Basilica who are baptized and free to marry in the Catholic Church may celebrate their marriage in Queen of All Saints Basilica. Couples from Queen of All Saints seeking marriage in Queen of All Saints Basilica should contact one of the parish priests at least six months prior to their intended date of marriage. The couple must meet with one of the priests before the date for the marriage can be confirmed. Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick The sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick is not just a sacrament for those who are at the point of death. As soon as one of the faithful begins to be in danger of death from sickness or old age, the fitting time for him or her to receive this sacrament has certainly already arrived. Therefore, any member of the faithful who is seriously ill because of sickness or advanced age may properly receive this sacrament. Twenty-Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time September 16, 2018 13
