THE PASTOR S COLUMN FEAST OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST, KING OF THE UNIVERSE, NOVEMBER 25, 2012 THANKFUL, MORE THAN EVER! Thanksgiving is always a time for giving thanks to God for all our blessings. But for me, and perhaps for you as well, this Thanksgiving weekend is a time for being especially aware and grateful to God for the blessings we just take for granted. Blessings like the fact that a room lights up when we hit the electrical switch; that hot water flows when we want to take a shower; that an adjustment to the thermostat brings the furnace to life; that the trees outside of our house are standing tall and not leaning again our property; that roads are passable and clear of debris; that the place we call home is still standing, dry, and inhabitable; that businesses, schools, and stores are open; that getting gas for our car does not require an hour or more wait; that mail gets delivered; or that phones, internet, and TV sets work. We are much more conscious of these easily overlooked blessings since Hurricane Sandy ripped them out of our life for days, and for other people for weeks, and for those people who lost their homes for many months. For me, there were two particular recent moments when I experienced an overwhelming sense of gratitude for simple things. The first occurred Sunday afternoon, November 4, when electrical power was restored to the rectory. The lights came on, the heat came up, hot water flowed, and our phones and internet started working once again. What wonderful gifts, I felt like it was Christmas morning! The other moment happened Tuesday, November 13. That day I accompanied my friend, Bob, to his home at the Jersey Shore. His house was still standing but was extensively damaged by water from the ocean and bay. The entire area was without running water, electrical power, natural gas, or heat, and access was very restricted. All morning we were busy throwing out everything from the flooded first floor of the house. We were tired, hungry, and upset by what we saw on the barrier island. In the early afternoon, I suddenly heard a voice from a loudspeaker announcing. "Hot food. Come get a hot meal. You can't work without energy." The announcement was from a Red Cross truck stopped at the corner. We joined our neighbors, who were also working at their devastated homes. Like us they had gathered to get something to eat. As I was getting a container of food from the volunteer in the Red Cross 3 truck I felt this profound sense of gratitude for the food and the kindness that was shown me. Never in my life did I think I would be in the position of standing beside a Red Cross Disaster Relief Truck. The simple meal I received made me simply grateful. As I write this, the thought struck me that we are all like people dependent upon the kindness of another. We all stand like people at God's Relief Truck as God lovingly gives us every good gift we have, and every good and loving person in our life. Hurricane Sandy did horrible damage but it did one small bit of good in my life. It has made me more aware and grateful than ever of the simple blessings I just take for granted. This Thanksgiving, I am more conscious than ever about thanks-giving and gratitude to God. Love, Father Tom Iwanowski NAME A ROOM AT THE PLC Last weekend, the Parish Life Center (PLC), a parish building located on Grove Street by the lower school was open for all to see the interior renovations made to the first floor. Everyone who visited was most impressed with the work that was done to make this historic parish property useable and beautiful. It truly is a gem that will provide a wonderful venue for parish meetings and events. There are now four rooms on the first floor in need of a name. When the rooms are assigned to different groups for various functions we want to be able to identify the assigned room by name. Certainly it would be easier to say, "You have been assigned the (n) room," rather than saying "You have the blue room on the right as you come in the main door." We would like each of the rooms to be named after a saint. If you would like to name a room after a saint and to do so in honor of your family or in memory of a loved one that would be wonderful. Each named room will be marked with a picture of its saint and a plaque acknowledging the donor. The Parish Finance Council has decided upon a suggested gift for the opportunity to choose a name for a room. The donations received will be used to replenish our Capital Fund. The Great Room has already been spoken for, but there are three more rooms waiting for a name. If you would like to discuss this naming opportunity please speak to Father Tom, our pastor, 201-261-0148.

WORKING TOGETHER TO SHARE THE SPIRIT OF CHRISTMAS What better way to prepare our homes and hearts for Christmas than to share our blessings with those in need through the Giving Tree, an annual tradition at Saint Joseph Parish. This year our Giving Tree will be helping families from Catholic Charities, families from the North Bergen area through Our Lady of Fatima Parish; Covenant House; and Several Sources. There is a Giving Tree located in the main entrance of the Church, with a second tree at the Harrison Street entrance. Please take a tag from the Giving Tree; purchase the requested gift; and place the wrapped gift, with the tag attached, under the tree the next time you come to Mass. (It is very important that you include the tag.) All Giving Tree Gifts need to be returned to the church no later than Sunday-December 9. Should you have any questions or concerns, please contact Anne Annunziato, our parish secretary, at the parish office 201-261-0148. ST. SAINT JOSEPH CHURCH ORADELL/NEW MILFORD, NJ Compiled by the Liturgy of the Word With Children Committee The Gospel is the Good News about Jesus. The Gospel Reading for today is from Saint John 18:33b-37. A King is a man who has great power and rules over people. A King can be good or bad. He can use his power selfishly to obtain what he wants and put his people after his own needs. Today we celebrate the feast of Christ the King. Jesus Christ is the King of Heaven. Like any King, Jesus could have used his power selfishly to obtain everything he wanted. Instead Jesus used his power to free people from sickness, from death, and from sin. He did not expect people to do things for him. Instead he lived as a servant to others. Jesus came to tell us the truth about God. He was sent to teach us how to live. He tells us to be kind to others and to help others when they need help. And until he comes again at the end of the world, he will reign in Heaven and sit at the right hand of God his Father. He is truly our King and if we listen to his voice and follow his example, we will live with God in Heaven forever. 6 MISSION OF THE WEEK Thanksgiving was this past Thursday, but today is still a good day to do some thanks giving. Be sure to say THANK YOU to your parents, grandparents, teachers, priests, and all people who do good things for you. Remember today to say THANK YOU to Jesus, our King, for making you part of his Church.
