Trentham, PGK, Faithful Navigator On April 4, 2018, a Chalice Ceremony was conducted at St. Olaf Catholic Church in memory of SK Robert Adams and SK Salvatore Vitale. For those who have not attended a Chalice Ceremony recently, or ever, it is a moving tribute to a fallen Sir Knight and is one of our obligations to our Brothers and their families. I cannot adequately describe the emotional impact of having a widow hold your hand and tell you how much she appreciates the Knights doing the ceremony for her husband. The fact of the matter is that is brings tears to your eyes. The Chalice Ceremony is not a long event; it probably takes twenty minutes or so to conduct, but it is very impactful. The table display, the entry of the honor guard and the procession of the Chalice Bearer, Lector and Poet are full of import and dignity. Words have their own impact and the words of the Chalice Ceremony are full of significance; to bid a last farewell to one of its loyal members, and to pay a small tribute of respect to him who Almighty God, in His infinite wisdom an mercy, has seen fit to call to his eternal reward. I believe that the words To pay a small tribute of respect are the heart of the Chalice Ceremony. I also believe that the departed Sir Knight somehow knows of our tribute and our courtesy to his widow, his family and of our remembrance of him. (Continued on page 2) www.kofcassembly2184.org 1
(Chalice Ceremony, continued from page 1) At the ceremony for SK s Adams and Vitale there was a Sir Knight from Northern Virginia who had never seen nor heard of a Chalice Ceremony. He was moved by the event and asked about it. I told him that, to my knowledge, it was a Virginia District ceremony and he replied that it should be an Order-wide activity. There are many duties of a Knight, and one of the most important, most significant, most memorable is the honor that we pay to our fallen brothers and their families. So, I ask each of you these questions: 1. Are your memorial preferences up to date and on file with the Faithful Comptroller? 2. Have you participated in or simply attend a Chalice Ceremony recently? If your answer is No to either or both of these questions, please take some time to reflect, pray and consider remedying the situation by placing your updated Memorial Preferences on file with the Faithful Comptroller and by taking the time to honor a fallen fellow Sir Knight. They may also wear a black, dark grey, or dark blue suit with a plain white shirt and basic/conservative style tie. Both jacket and pants must be dark in color. Brown, green, or other color suits are not authorized. The social baldric should be worn under the jacket, but in front of the tie. All Sir Knights, observers, or color corps members will wear the Fourth-Degree pin, the PG-113. No other pin will be worn. Policemen and Firemen may wear their dress uniform. All observers attending the Exemplification will need to present current 3 rd and 4 th Degree membership cards.
