Prepare the Way of the Lord This Second Sunday of Advent we hear the call in the Gospel to Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight his paths. Every valley shall be filled and every mountain and hill shall be made low. This is a vivid reminder that, as God desires to be with us, so must we work to prepare our hearts and our lives to be places where he desires to dwell and that are fi ng for his coming. While this prepara on can take on many forms, Saint Luke reminds us of one important way, repentance for the forgiveness of sins. As Catholics, we repent of our sins and are forgiveness in the Sacrament of Reconcilia on, and Advent, the season of prepara on, is a perfect me to celebrate this beau ful sacrament and ready our hearts for the coming of the Lord. This Tuesday, December 11, The Light Is On For You! at parishes across the Diocese of Pi sburgh from 6:00-9:00 pm and priests will be available to hear Confessions. PARISH MINISTRY Rite of Chris an Ini a on of Adults Come and Learn - RCIA Sessions All are welcome to the RCIA sessions held on Thursday evenings from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm in Rooms 5A and 5B. COME AND LEARN and grow in your faith. These sessions are a wonderful way for Catholics to renew and refresh their faith. December 13 What does it mean to pray the Liturgy? Did Jesus really give us the Mass? What is a Sacrament? Come and learn as David and Patricia Tamburri will teach this session on the Celebra on of the Chris an Mystery. They will explain how we all enter into the Paschal mystery of Christ through our par cipa on in the liturgy. For our winter Holy Day break, there will be NO RCIA sessions on December 20, 27 and January 3. God Is Calling You to a Deeper Rela onship If we consider that God is the Divine Bridegroom and the Church is his Bride, then the prophets can be seen as spiritual marriage counselors. They afflict the comfortable and comfort the afflicted, calling us to return to our covenant rela onship with God. They urge us to repentance, warn us of the dangers of sin, and announce the blessings of faithfulness. Their prophe c words speak to us even today, as they draw us closer to our heavenly Bridegroom. We will begin our next 10 session Bible Study en tled The Prophets: Messengers of God s Mercy, on Monday January 14 at 6:30 pm and Thursday January 17 at 10:45 am. All sessions will be held in Rooms 5A and 5B. In The Prophets You Will: Discover who the prophets were, what their message was, and why they are important to us. See how God is constantly calling you to a deeper rela onship with him. Discover the areas in your life that prevent you from drawing closer to God. Understand how the central message of the prophets is one of love, proclaiming the mercy of God for his children. See how their powerful words speak to us today, shedding light on our faith and our lives. To purchase a study set, visit h ps:// shop.ascensionpress.com/collec ons/prophetsmessengers-of-gods-mercy/products/prophets-study-set or call 1-800-376-0520. For more informa on contact Mary Jordan at the parish office. Reflec on This week we celebrate another Marian feast when we remember Our Lady of Guadalupe on Wednesday, December 12. Below is the story of this Marian appari on. The feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe commemorates the appari on of the Blessed Mother to Juan Diego, a 57- year-old Aztec Indian peasant. Our Lady appeared to Juan as an indigenous woman and spoke to him in his own indigenous language. She appeared to Juan Diego four mes between December 9 and 12 in 1531 on Tepeyac Hill located just north of Mexico City. Juan Diego, whose feast day is December 9, was canonized by St. Pope John Paul II in 2002. This is the only appari on where Our Lady le a miraculous image of herself, on the lma (cloak) given to Juan Diego. The appari on is also unique in that Mary appeared pregnant instead of holding the infant Jesus. Our Lady of Guadalupe is the patron of Mexico and the Americas. The feast day is one of the most popular religious celebra ons in Mexico, La n America and the United States. St. Juan Diego is the first indigenous saint from the Americas and holds a special place in the hearts of the Mexican people. Our Lady of Guadalupe holds such a special place in the hearts of the Mexican people and many others throughout the world because she is a symbol of faith, hope and consola on. In 16th century Mexico, the appari on and message of Our Lady of Guadalupe offered a message of hope to the oppressed indigenous peoples of Mexico and a reconcilia on with their Spanish rulers who treated the indigenous as outcasts. The appari on also saw the end of the human sacrifices of the Aztecs and worship of stone gods as millions of indigenous people converted to Chris anity within a few years of the appari on. www.catholicculture.org Need Some Support During This Season? At this me of year, when it seems that the world is full of joy and cheer, maybe you are not feeling that way. Maybe you are ill, or have a lost a loved one or have lost a job and you would like someone to care, to pray and to talk to. Stephen Ministry may be the ministry for you! Stephen Ministry is a caregiving ministry in our parish to plant seeds of hope and healing in a person whose life seems barren and forlorn because of a crisis or tragedy. Stephen Ministers: listen, explore feelings, pray, share Christ s love, maintain confiden ality, and a end to the caregiving process while leaving the results to God. If you are in need of a Stephen Minister, please contact Mary Jordan at the parish office for assistance.

MUSIC MINISTRY As we prepare the way for Jesus to be born anew in our hearts this Christmas, what are the valleys we are called to fill in? What are the mountains that we must overcome to become more Christ-like? Today we hear John the Bap st preach a bap sm of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. This week, take a look at your life and ask yourself, how can I be made whole again? Give yourself the best Christmas present ever by filling in those valleys and overcoming those mountains. Make the second verse of our closing hymn, On Jordan s Bank, be your medita on for the week. Then cleansed be every life from sin, make straight the way for God within, And let each heart prepare a home where such a mighty guest may come. God Bless! Jim Skalos, Music Minister FOREVER I DO MARRIAGE MINISTRY Please join us to celebrate the most wonderful me of the year with the most wonderful person in your life: your spouse! Dustbuster Appeal 2018 As you come into the church each weekend, do you no ce how clean everything is? You might be surprised to know that the church and the narthex are mopped, vacuumed and dusted each week by teams of volunteers. Our Dustbusters ministry was formed when we moved into the church building almost 23 years ago. At that me, we had five teams with 10 people on each team. But we are now down to four teams with not nearly as many volunteers. So WE NEED HELP! Our ideal would be to bring it up to six teams and to add volunteers to the exis ng teams. The commitment is Saturday morning, hopefully every six weeks, for roughly an hour and a half, but if we have more people that would reduce the me involved even further! This ministry saves the church an incredible amount of money. Back in 2005, the quotes we received exceeded $40,000 annually. Who can even guess what it would be now? So please consider helping out. This is your parish and this is one small but important way that your me and talent can contribute. Please consider this ministry and call the office if you can help. Did you know that you can give to Saint Richard Parish online instead of using an envelope every week? Just scan the code or visit: www.faithdirect.net
