Easter Sunday Brunch We will continue our Bon Air tradition by hosting a potluck brunch for the entire congregation and our guests beginning at 9:30 a.m. in the Fellowship Hall. To participate in the brunch ~and we hope you will~ please sign-up on the bulletin board to let us know what potluck item you will bring (egg casseroles or other brunch items). Flowering of the Cross This Easter Sunday, as with many Easter Sundays before, we are asking the congregation to bring in cut flowers so the children can decorate the Easter Cross at 10:00 a.m. on the front lawn. There can never be too many flowers! Easter Egg Hunt The Christian Education Division, with the help from our Youth, is sponsoring the Annual Easter Egg Hunt for elementary age children. It all begins on Easter Sunday at 10:30 a.m. outside the office foyer. Kids bring your basket! Families bring a camera to capture all of the fun and festivities. Don t miss this wonderful opportunity to gather together and celebrate with both young and old! Butterfly Easter Party Just as Jesus rose from the dead, little cocoons appear to be dead and yet beautiful butterflies emerge from their tombs into new life. Our young children are invited to a special Butterfly Easter Party after the Children s Conversation at the 11:00 a.m. Easter worship service. Come and play with the butterflies!

OUTREACH April, 2017 PAGE 5 Join us on Sunday, April 2, at 5:00 p.m. for a candlelight Taizé Prayer Service in our sanctuary. This will be a time to rest in God, to let the words and music penetrate your being. There is no preaching, no teaching, no talk of sin or repentance or forgiveness. There is just an elegantly simple service: scripture, prayers, and repeated verses of short songs led by piano and flute. We are offered a quiet time to center ourselves, lift up prayers for ourselves and others, and light commemorative candles. Easter Sunday, April 16 One Great Hour of Sharing what does it mean, where does it help? Churches in the Presbyterian Church, USA (PCUSA) have traditional special offerings that, as a denomination, we collectively support to have a greater impact. One of these denominational offerings is the One Great Hour of Sharing offering. These monies collected across our denomination can reach so many throughout the coming year. Isaiah 58 describes a new kind of fast, not to give up bread, but to share it. Isaiah calls us to loose the bonds of injustice, to let the oppressed go free, to share bread with the hungry and to invite the homeless poor into our homes. Bon Air Presbyterian traditionally collects this offering on Easter, and distributes our collection back to the PCUSA for use its Presbyterian Disaster Assistance programs, Presbyterian Hunger programs, and the Self Development of People programs which provide help and assistance to those most in need. TRIALOGUE INTERFAITH DISCUSSIONS Bon Air Presbyterian Church, Bonay Kodesh Reformed Jewish Congregation, St. Edward Catholic church, OR AMI Reformed Jewish Congregation, Huguenot Road Baptist Church, Bon Air United Methodist Church, Christ the King Lutheran Church, the Islamic Center of Virginia, and Bon Air Christian Church are launching their 10 th Annual Interfaith Dialogue. This year dialogue will focus on the topic of: Addressing the Growing Fear in Our Society How did we come to fear the other and how to overcome it? The aim of the dialogue is to deepening mutual understanding and appreciation between the three Abrahamic faith communities. The dialogue helps participants to appreciate their respective faiths as good neighbors, leads to goodwill and mutual understanding, and provides a model of neighborhood harmony in Chesterfield County and the region. The gatherings also provide important opportunities to address religious and moral issues facing the Richmond region. The three events start at 7:00 p.m. Refreshments will be available. April 27 at St. Edward the Confessor Catholic Church (Dolfield Dr. at Huguenot Rd.) May 11 at OR AMI (9400 W. Huguenot Rd.) May 18 at the Islamic Center of Virginia (1241 Buford Rd.)
PAGE 6 OUTREACH April, 2017 The BAPC Session Reports At its regularly scheduled meeting on March 12, 2017, the Session: Approved funding a ministry intern for the 2017-2018 academic year. Agreed to hold a meeting with the POJ Vision 20/20 team to give them an opportunity to talk the congregation about the presbytery and its mission. The meeting will be scheduled on a Wednesday night in May at 7:00 p.m. The congregation is invited to attend. Scheduled the Annual Session Strategic Planning Meeting for Saturday, June 10, 2017. The ordination and installation of elders will be held on Sunday, June 11, 2017. Approved the Covenant with Lauren Ramseur as Covenant Pastor for Youth, Children and Families at BAPC. The covenant is from April 1, 2017 March 31, 2018. Approved an Employment Contract with Kim Negaard to serve as the Church Bookkeeper, effective March, 1, 2017. The contract will be reviewed annually. SPRING CLEAN UP DAY April 8 9:00 a.m. 12:00 p.m. BAPC Mission Trip to West Virginia! Dates are set! Hopefully you have heard!! Bon Air Presbyterian Church s Endowment Fund has approved funding for a mission trip this summer. As a result, Bon Air Presbyterian Church will be going on a week-long mission trip to West Virginia, Sunday, July 2- Saturday, July 8. We are coordinating our work through the West Virginia Presbytery and will be headed to Webster Springs, WV, an area hit by the widespread flooding of June 2016. Our work might consist of repairing flooring, building wheelchair ramps, and other guided repairs. We will be provided a site-leader, and will be staying in a local church that will provide dormitory style housing, plenty of showers, a full kitchen and an outdoor worship area with fire pit! Ages 14 and older are welcome and NEEDED. If you are interested in participating in this mission trip to serve our neighbors in West Virginia, please let Ernie Wright know at (804) 658-8308 or as you see him around church. Calling all members and friends of BAPC! On Saturday, April 8, starting at 9:00 a.m., we will have our annual spring clean-up day. Activities will include cleaning out flower beds, spreading mulch, trimming up shrubs, power washing sidewalks and other great cleaning activities. Please bring your favorite yard working tools or we can provide them for you. We hope to be done around noon, but please show up for as long as you can and help us prepare the Lord s house for Palm Sunday and Easter. SERVICE OF REMEMBRANCE The Memorial Garden Committee invites you to join them in the garden following the 11:00 a.m. worship service on Sunday, April 30, for our annual Service of Remembrance. At this brief service we recall especially those of our friends and family who are interred in The Memorial Garden.
OUTREACH April, 2017 PAGE 7 As many of you know, Chesterfield County picks up recycling at private residences but not at facilities or institution such as our church. To "Care for our Creation", four teams of church volunteers have, for many years, picked up recycling items at the church. They take it to their homes where it is combined with their own recycling to then be picked up by the County. On a semi-weekly basis, these volunteers pick up paper, aluminum, cardboard, and other recyclable items from church offices and the church kitchen and bring it to their homes. Each team does this for three months each year. If anyone is interested in helping with this effort, contact John Rupp. Second Sunday South of the James Presents The Virginia Handbell Consort Saturday, April 29 ~ 4:00 p.m. (No concert on April 9) The Virginia Handbell Consort formed in the fall of 1996 to create the first community handbell ensemble in the Hampton Roads area. The ensemble is comprised of auditioned musicians performing on six octaves of Schulmerich bells, six octaves of hand chimes and several percussion instruments. Rosalind Morris Boyle, grew up here at BAPC ringing handbells. Rosalind is one of the founders and a professional ringer in the Virginia Handbell Consort. Also visiting BAPC at the concert will be former organist and Director of Music, Jane Townsend of Martinsburg, VA. OUTREACH April, 2017 PAGE 9 Colin s Theology Corner Priesthood of all believers is a phrase that many of us may have heard. It is also an idea that is affirmed by the Reformed tradition and the PC(USA), as 1 Peter 2:9 reminds us that the Christian community are a royal priesthood. But what exactly does it mean? We don t tend to use priest for our clergy, and certainly not all of us have attended seminary, or participated in ordained ministry. So what is going on here? I think it is helpful here to start with a section from our Book of Order: [T]hey are called to share with others both within and beyond the congregation the task of bearing witness to the Lordship of Jesus Christ in the world. This call to bear witness is the work of all believers. (G-3.0101) Elsewhere in the Book of Order it maintains that the existence of ordered ministries does not diminish the call of all believers to do the work of Christ (G-2.0102). So, why this priest language that seems a bit foreign to many of us? Shirley Guthrie explains that priest language is meant to indicate those who bring God to [people] and [people] to God, and thus fulfill a mediating or reconciling function. We bring God to others and others to God as we live a life that is dedicated to the work of God in the world. Calvin assures us that this is not only done from a pulpit, but in each of our particular duties that God has called us to. We often call this vocation, and each of us has a different one. But, in all that we do we are called to proclaim the love of God, the Lordship of Jesus Christ, and the presence of the Holy Spirit, which can be done in all things. We attempt to fulfill this calling in our lives by living as Christ taught: advocating for the less fortunate, providing food and shelter for those who are hungry and homeless, visiting others in prison. We also fulfill our calling everyday in how we interact with co-workers and customers, the choices we make for our own businesses, how we interact with patients and their families, etc. These are all things that we can do no matter what job we have, even if we aren t actually priests. So, as we enter the final days of Lent, anticipating the resurrection of Christ, let us all remember that we are all called to the ministry of the resurrected Christ. Business people, hospitality workers, government officials, engineers, stay-at-home parents, and educators alike are called to witness to the resurrection through the living out of the gospel in our lives; at work, home, and everywhere in between.
