How to Celebrate Advent like a Catholic The following are a few ways you and your family can celebrate the season of Advent in your homes as you prepare for Christmas. 1. Advent Wreath: One of the most popular ways to celebrate Advent is with an Advent wreath or Advent candleholders. Four candles (three purple and one pink), are used to count down the weeks until Christmas. Each Sunday of Advent one of the candles is lit and special prayers are said. 2. Special Prayers: Take the time for special prayer time together as a family. 3. Advent Calendars: Another popular way to celebrate the Advent season, especially popular with children, is the Advent calendar. Counting down the days to Christmas helps children to anticipate patiently and to focus on waiting for the baby Jesus to be born. You can make your own very simply by taking a calendar and each day commit you and your family to do a good deed during this special season. 4. Small Sacrifices for the Christ Child: Because Advent is known as the little Lent, prayer, alms, and sacrifices are also a part of Advent season. Just as the Magi labored through a long journey to worship and gave precious gifts to the Christ Child, so we can do the same; we can give the Baby Jesus our sacrifices during the Advent season. A piece of straw is added to Baby Jesus crib for each good deed. These add up each day of Advent as birthday presents for the newborn King. When Jesus is born, and the baby Jesus is placed in the crib, the prayers and sacrifices have prepared Him room in our hearts. A beautiful visual! 5. Advent Penance Services: Many parishes have special penance services for Advent. Confession is an important part of preparing room for the coming of Christ into our hearts. St. Mary Parish Penance Service is Thursday, December 20, at 7:00pm. The Message will not publish December 28, 2018 and January 4, 2019. The final 2018 issue will be published on December 21 and the first 2019 issue will be published on January 11. Information for publication before Christmas must be received in The Message office by December12; information for publication in the January 11, issue should arrive no later than January 2. There has been a set of keys turned into the parish office that has been found by the Ireland Historical Society. Call the parish office if you think they could be your keys 812-482-7041.
