CLIMB Christ Living In Me Because..

Peter - From Fisherman to Fireman Peter Bible Character Study Notes Ancestry and family life: Peter had a brother named Andrew who was also a disciple of John the Baptist.and introduced him to Jesus. {John 1:35-42} The Bible reveals little about Peter's life before he met Jesus, we can learn some of his background from anecdotal accounts and factual historical incidences in Scripture. Name: Peter / Cephas Rock / Stone Simon / Simeon / Simon Bar-Jonah Meaning of name: {Mat_4:18} Peter Stone Peter is Greek word, meaning the same as Syriac word Cephas, a stone {John 1:42} Simon שמעי ןShim on, hearing, answer. {Acts 15:14} Simeon - This is a Hebrew name. Greek writing it was Simon, one of the names of Peter. Simeon - שמעון shimon, hearing {John 1:42} Cephas - This is a Syriac word, meaning the same as the Greek word Peter, a stone. Cephas, which is by interpretation, A stone - Πετρος signifies a stone, or fragment of a rock {Mat_16:17} Simon bar-jonah (meaning Simon the son of Jonah). Before Peter met Jesus, he lived to the west in the Galilean town of Capernaum and was married {Matthew 8:14} Peter and Andrew went into partnership with James and John, the sons of Zebedee {Luke 5:10} When and where he lived: Israel was subject to Rome and chaffing under its rule with frequent riots and uprisings. Several influential parties rose up in Israel, the Pharisees were religious conservatives and were known for their religiousness and the Sadducees were more liberal and worked with Rome and also denied the resurrection. The zealots were against any cooperation with Rome and were basically terrorists. All the religious-minded in Israel were expectantly waiting for the coming of the Messiah. Peter got to witness with his own eyes the Son of God incarnate, the crucifixion, and the resurrection. Peter was born in or near Bethsaida-Julius (John 1:44), which lay on the north shore of the Sea of Galilee - the town's name means "house of the fisherman," and it sat just east of the Jordan River. This town lay outside the province of Galilee and under the rule of Herod Philip, a son of Herod the Great also the home town of Nathanael. Bethsaida-Julius was a town inhabited by mostly wealthy Jews and Greeks. The lakefront at Capernaum was the scene of constant activity as boats from other fishing villages stopped there because of the rich fishing grounds between it and Bethsaida, some three miles to the east. Simon Peter and his brother Andrew likely traded with both Jews and Greeks and probably spoke Aramaic as well as some Greek.

Training and occupation: Prior to being Called by Jesus Mat_4:18 As He was walking by the Sea of Galilee, He noticed two brothers, Simon who is called Peter and Andrew his brother, throwing a dragnet into the sea, for they were fishermen. Mat 4:21 And going on further from there He noticed two other brothers, James son of Zebedee and his brother John, in the boat with their father Zebedee, mending their nets and putting them right; and He called them. After the Calling by Jesus Luke 5:10 And so also were James and John, the sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon (Peter). And Jesus said to Simon, Have no fear; from now on you will be catching men! Fishermen at that time due to the type of work demanded and its many frustrations were a coarse and rough a hardy group. Perhaps why James and John were called the Sons of Thunder (Mark 3:17). Fishing was a very physically demanding job with little reward should the fish not be plentiful. They must have been somewhat fearless because of the storms that came quickly upon the Sea of Galilee, storms could be fierce and uncompromising These storms had intensity that often caught the fishermen by surprise and could easily capsize the 20 to 30 foot boats they used. Place in history: Peter was the unspoken leader of the twelve. It seems he was frequently the first to express views and answer Jesus questions or ask him questions. He was part of the inner circle of Jesus disciples who got to witness the transfiguration {Matt 17:1}. He is the most well-known of the disciples, both for some of his faults and for his outspoken faith. Some key points: Peter preached the sermon at Pentecost where three thousand believed {Acts 2:14-44} He also was instrumental in establishing the church in Samaria {Acts 8:14-25} Bringing the gospel to the Gentiles {Acts 10:1-48} Some Weaknesses: 1. EX: Mark 9:5- Luke 9:33 2. EX: Mark 8:32- Mat 16:22 3. EX: Mat 26:33-35 Luke 22:33-34 4. Ex: Mat 19:27 Mk 10:28 5. EX: Mark 14:37-42, 14:66-72 6. EX: Mat 26:58-74 Mk 14:54-72 Some Strengths:. 1. EX: Mat 14:28-29 2. EX: Mk 10:28 3. EX: Mat 16:16 4. EX: John 21:15-19 5. Perseverance until the end of his life - Transformed Apostle Disciple Teacher Martyred 6. Faithful Dedicated Motivated to be all that his Lord asked - Peter spent the remainder of his life serving his Lord and teaching others to Believe, Obey, and remain Faithful. How he died: John 21:18-19 is a prophecy that Peter would die as a martyr. The Bible doesn t specifically record this death, but tradition says that Peter died as a martyr in Rome. He refused to be crucified head up because he didn t consider himself worthy to die like Jesus did and was crucified upside-down.

Fisherman with his brother Andrew Mat 4:18 Now as Jesus was walking by the Sea of Galilee, He saw two brothers, Simon who was called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen. Mat 4:19 And He *said to them, "Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men." Mat 4:20 Immediately they left their nets and followed Him. Fisherman turned disciples who witnessed many miracles healings power Mat 8:23 When He got into the boat, His disciples followed Him. Mat 8:24 And behold, there arose a great storm on the sea, so that the boat was being covered with the waves; but Jesus Himself was asleep. Mat 8:25 And they came to Him and woke Him, saying, "Save us, Lord; we are perishing!" Mat 8:26 He *said to them, "Why are you afraid, you men of little faith?" Then He got up and rebuked the winds and the sea, and it became perfectly calm. Mat 8:27 The men were amazed, and said, "What kind of a man is this, that even the winds and the sea obey Him?" Fisherman who was given power and authority by Jesus to preach heal cast out demons Mat 10:1 Jesus summoned His twelve disciples and gave them authority over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal every kind of disease and every kind of sickness. Mat 10:2 Now the names of the twelve apostles are these: The first, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother; and James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother;

Fisherman who walked on water Mat_14:28 Peter said to Him, "Lord, if it is You, command me to come to You on the water." Mat_14:29 And He said, "Come!" And Peter got out of the boat, and walked on the water and came toward Jesus. Fisherman who first declared who Jesus was and immediately fell thinking he was more than he was Mat_16:16 Simon Peter answered, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God." Mat_16:18 "I also say to you that you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build My church; and the gates of Hades will not overpower it. Mat_16:22 Peter took Him aside and began to rebuke Him, saying, "God forbid it, Lord! This shall never happen to You." Mat_16:23 But He turned and said to Peter, "Get behind Me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to Me; for you are not setting your mind on God's interests, but man's." Fisherman who witnessed the Transfiguration of Jesus and presumed that he was now important Mat_17:1 Six days later Jesus *took with Him Peter and James and John his brother, and *led them up on a high mountain by themselves. Mat_17:4 Peter said to Jesus, "Lord, it is good for us to be here; if You wish, I will make three tabernacles here, one for You, and one for Moses, and one for Elijah." Fisherman who thought he was being praiseworthy by offering forgiveness 7 times Mat_18:21 Then Peter came and said to Him, "Lord, how often shall my brother sin against me and I forgive him? Up to seven times?" Fisherman who was interested in getting what he deserved for his sacrifice Mat_19:27 Then Peter said to Him, "Behold, we have left everything and followed You; what then will there be for us?" Fisherman who thought he had it all together and was commanding recognition Mat_26:33 But Peter said to Him, "Even though all may fall away because of You, I will never fall away." Mat_26:35 Peter *said to Him, "Even if I have to die with You, I will not deny You." All the disciples said the same thing too. Fisherman who was a coward denied knowing Christ 3 times and was devastated at his failure Mat_26:69 Now Peter was sitting outside in the courtyard, and a servant-girl came to him and said, "You too were with Jesus the Galilean." Mat_26:73 A little later the bystanders came up and said to Peter, "Surely you too are one of them; for even the way you talk gives you away." Mat_26:75 And Peter remembered the word which Jesus had said, "Before a rooster crows, you will deny Me three times." And he went out and wept bitterly.

1. When you think of Peter what character traits come to mind as you consider what you already know about him? 2. Describe in your own words what Being Transformed means to you as a Christian. 3. In the story of Lot and the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah, why did Lot s wife turn around when they had been warned not to do so? Mark_8:34 And He summoned the crowd with His disciples, and said to them, "If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross and follow Me. 4. Describe what Jesus meant in this verse Mk 8:34 and how does it apply to all disciples? 5. Peter had faults and failures just like us how does his example give you courage to make the changes that are needed to develop a closer walk with the Lord? 6. What did Peter Know? Mat_16:16 Simon Peter answered, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God." 7. What did Peter Believe? Mat_19:27 Then Peter said to Him, "Behold, we have left everything and followed You; what then will there be for us?" Act_2:38 Peter said to them, "Repent, and each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 8. What did Peter Value? Joh_21:17 He *said to him the third time, "Simon, son of John, do you love Me?" Peter was grieved because He said to him the third time, "Do you love Me?" And he said to Him, "Lord, You know all things; You know that I love You." Jesus *said to him, "Tend My sheep. Act_5:29 But Peter and the apostles answered, "We must obey God rather than men. You will never Attempt You will never Accomplish You will never Finish What you don t Know What you don t Believe What you don t Value Scripture uses many different images to express the change that should occur: We become "a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come" (2 Cor 5:17). It is almost as if we become a new species. Scripture speaks of the "first Adam" who was earthly and fell into sin, and the "second Adam" (Jesus Christ) who was sinless and holy (Rom 5:12-19; 1 Cor 15:44-49). We are "made new in the attitude of your minds" (Eph 4:23). We "put off your old self" and "put on the new self" (Eph 4:22,24; Col 3:9-10). We "live by the Spirit" and not by the flesh (Gal 5:16; Rom 8:13). We become "instruments of righteousness" rather than "instruments of wickedness" (Rom 6:13). We have "been buried with him through baptism into death" in order that "we may live a new life" (Rom 6:4). "I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me" (Gal 2:20). We have "been set free from sin and have become slaves to God" (Rom 6:22). We are no longer "slaves to sin, which leads to death", but have become "slaves to... obedience, which leads to righteousness" (Rom 6:16). We are rescued ("translated" KJV) from the kingdom of darkness into the Kingdom of God's son (Col. 1:13). Our citizenship and our allegiance has been changed. We have become adopted sons of God (John 1:12-13; Rom 8:15-16). We are "born again" (John 3:3,5); born from above, of the spirit and not the flesh.

Action Plan God expects us to be radically transformed The goal of this transformation To become like God in character To live for the things that are unseen To "live by the Spirit" To be yielded to God How can we achieve this transformation? Believe Chose Stay in God s word Guard our thoughts Pray Persevere Resist the enemy Keep the vision The Greek word for Transformation is metamorphoo, from which comes the word "metamorphosis" -- meaning a complete change of form (such as that from a caterpillar into a butterfly) Rom 12:1 Therefore I urge you, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship. Rom 12:2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect. Rom 12:3 For through the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think more highly of himself than he ought to think; but to think so as to have sound judgment, as God has allotted to each a measure of faith. Rom 12:4 For just as we have many members in one body and all the members do not have the same function, Rom 12:5 so we, who are many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another. Still trying to get that Camel through the eye of a needle?
