BLESSED SACRAMENT CHURCH From the Pastor s Desk The summer is almost over and we are about to enter into a new school year. Some of our loved ones have already gone off to college and others are starting new schools in just a few days. To each of our members, no matter what grade or school they are in, we offer up prayers of safety and hope, for a school year filled with challenge, good adventures and successful learning. As we enter into a new school year, we also enter into a new Religious Education program year. Can you imagine if a parent were to say to their child: You have finished 4th grade, that is enough for you, you can get by in the world with that amount of knowledge. You would think that there is something wrong with that parent. How does a 4th grader have enough knowledge to become successful in the world? Yet, that unfortunately is what so many parents think is enough for religious education classes for their child. Four years of thirty classes a year (if weather or other causes don't cancel one), of one hour classes, is enough to have a child know everything there is to know about what the Church believes and teaches, our relationship with God, prayers and sacraments. Yep, that s all they need, many parents would say. Now, why would I say four years? Because many parents only have their children take religious education classes in order to receive a Sacrament (First Holy Communion and Confirmation). When there is no Sacrament to receive, the child is not signed up for class. What they learn in the years they miss, I guess, is not important to the parents. Lets compare the difference. Regular Elementary School, from first grade to the end of fourth grade, for 180 days (school year) at 7 hours a day times four years equals 5,040 hours. Religious Education classes for one hour, times four years equals 120 hours. The 5,040 hours of instruction is not enough for a child to be successful in the world but 120 hours of religious education instruction is enough to develop, and hold, a relationship with God and His Church. Is there something wrong with this thinking? At Baptism the priest says to the parents: You are the first teachers of your child in the ways of Faith. Every child should be enrolled in a religious education program every year so that they can learn about God and His plan for them. We Need to Update our Census Information PAGE TWO We have come to realize, like that of many parishes, our census information is way out of date. Just to give a couple of examples, of situations, that have happened within the last month: A parishioner left a book (with their name printed on it) in the Church. We looked them up in our census information. Even though they have been here for years they never registered; and therefore we had no way of contacting them to tell them we had the book. Only many days later, did she come to the Rectory, asking if anyone had turned it in. Another example: A parishioner dropped a loose check in the collection but is was unsigned. The check only had their name printed on it. We looked them up in our records and yes, they were registered so we called the number we had. That number was no good. So, we then mailed it, to them, and received the envelope back saying no longer at that address. This has been happening more often than not. Many people think they are registered parishioners, but are not. Please do not equate receiving offertory envelopes with being a registered parishioner. We have many people, who are registered, but don't want to receive church envelopes. It is important that you update your Church registration information. You can come into the Rectory and fill out a new census form or you can even call Teresa (our Office Manager) and she will be happy to send you a new form; and you can drop off the completed information, in the collection basket, or bring it to the Rectory. When You Are On Vacation When you are on vacation, don't take a vacation away from the Lord. You can always find a Catholic Church at www.masstimes.org

The Twenty-second Sunday in Ordinary Time Go into the whole world and proclaim the gospel to every creature. Mark 16:15 There is no greater command, from Jesus himself, than to go out and proclaim the gospel. This is not a task left to bishops, priests, deacons and religious; it is a command given to all Christians. There is no more important ministry than proclaiming the gospel and transmitting the faith, particularly to the younger generations. Here at Blessed Sacrament, as in each parish within the Archdiocese of New York, we have a comprehensive religious education program. This program exists, to pass on the Faith, to the youth of our parish. Without this passing on, of the Faith, there will be no Church, in the future. Our program needs your help. Firstly, we need your prayers. Secondly, we need dedicated people to volunteer to answer the call of the Lord. We need people who are willing to spend quality time, with our children, teaching them and guiding them, in the faith. We need people who are willing, to take the time, to deepen their own faith; so they may more effectively pass along their faith to the future generations of believers. I will not lie to you; the task may not be easy; it will take dedication and conviction but, the rewards are far greater than the efforts. If you are ready to answer the call from Our Lord, to proclaim the gospel, please contact the Rectory. Leave your name, address, telephone number and e-mail address. We will contact you. We need teachers, teachers aides and class mothers. Have no fear, we will train you. Thank you, and may God bless you. PAX Deacon Frank Orlando Director of Religious Education Blessed Sacrament Parish Name: Address: Telephone: E-mail Address: Please Print Clearly PAGE THREE Music Notes for this Weekend By John Wolfe, Organist and Music Director Prelude: Toccata in C Major, SwWV 284 By Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck (1562-1621) Opening Hymn: number 623 Lord, Whose Love in Humble Service Offertory Hymn: number 386 The Servant Song Communion Hymn: number 406 Godhead Here in Hiding Closing Hymn: number 499 O Lord, I Am Not Worthy Postlude: Hymnus Christe Redemptor omnium By Girolamo Cavazzoni (c.1525-1577) Although taken for granted today, the close association between the organ and the church has not always been in place. In the early days of the organ s history, the instrument served mainly to accompany dancing, and its repertoire consisted largely of transcriptions, of vocal works and pieces, for other instruments. The organ s role as an integral part of Christian worship was a recent development, in the late Renaissance era; and the Italian father-son duo of Marcantonio and Girolamo Cavazzoni were at the forefront of this innovation. By the time Girolamo published his music, in the mid-sixteenth century, the organ s strength in filling large sanctuaries and its usefulness in grounding the sung Mass were apparent. Intended for church use, Hymnus Christe Redemptor omnium is a loose adaptation of the Gregorian chant of the same name: O Christ, Redeemer of our race, / Thou Brightness of the Father's Face, Of Him, and with Him ever One, / Ere times and seasons had begun. From the age of fifteen, Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck was the organist, at the Oude Kerk ( Old Church ) in Amsterdam, at a time when the city was as its peak as a cultural capital. His tenure witnessed the official state religion changing, from Catholicism to Calvinism, and since the Calvinists forbade organ music during worship, his post consisted almost entirely of giving improvised matinee concerts. The vigorous style he pioneered, in this capacity, marked a critical point in the transition, from the Renaissance to the Baroque, owing especially to the music s use of repetitive running figures, which give the music perpetual forward motion wonderfully suited to the disposition of keyboard instruments. Sweelinck s reputation as The Orpheus of Amsterdam drew students, to him from all over Europe, particularly Lutheran North Germany; and his students in turn spread the new fortspinning ( spinning out ) style across the continent. Virtually, all Baroque keyboard music displays traces of Sweelinck s innovation, which allowed for endless bedazzlement, as well as the virtuosity displayed in that quintessential organ genre: the toccata.

August 28, 2016 Registration for Religious Education Classes for Children It is important that every child, in our Parish, have a firm and complete knowledge, of the Roman Catholic Faith. The Blessed Sacrament Religious Education Program is currently accepting re-registrations and new registrations for students, from Kindergarten through 8th Grade, for the school year 2016-2017. You can find registration forms in the back of the Church or for more information, please call the Religious Education Office at (914) 235-7311, Monday to Thursday, from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. Se Habla Espanol. Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults Are you an adult, who has been attending Blessed Sacrament Church, but are not a Roman Catholic? Do you know a family member, neighbor or friend who has expressed a desire to become a Roman Catholic but does not know how to go about it? Are you a person who was Baptized in the Roman Catholic Church but never received any other Sacrament? Then, the R.C.I.A. (the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) is for you and for them. What is the R.C.I.A.? It is a series of instructions that begin in late September and end with the reception of the Sacraments at the Easter Vigil (the night before Easter Sunday). Who can join the R.C.I.A.? Any person who has not been baptized, anyone baptized a Catholic but never received any other sacrament, or anyone who was baptized into another religion but now desires to be a Roman Catholic. When are the classes held? They will be held on Saturday mornings and will last for just over an hour. Of course, attendance at Sunday Mass will also be a requirement for those who desire to become a Roman Catholic. What do you need to do in order to join this class? Please contact Father Luciano. Why not learn about the Faith and be Baptized/Received into the Roman Catholic Church? PAGE FOUR Welcome into the Catholic Church We welcome into the Roman Catholic Church those infants and young children who have been baptized here at Blessed Sacrament during August 2016. May God s many blessings and graces be with them as they grow in wisdom and strength. Valerie Rose Hurtado Bella Elizabeth Ittoop Elizabeth Arianna Lopez Victoria In Memoriam Our hearts go out to those who lost loved ones this year. Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord. And may perpetual light shine upon them. May God strengthen their families in this time of trial. We especially remember those who are buried in our Parish Cemetery: Holy Sepulchre. First Friday - September 2nd Our sense of worship informs the way we think about God and the way we act towards Him. To help us worship God, in the way He should be worshiped, next Friday, at 3pm and every subsequent First Friday, of the month, we will have prayers in Honor of the Divine Mercy and Benediction, at the conclusion of these prayers. Why at 3:00pm? That is the Hour of Divine Mercy, as told to Saint Faustina by Jesus, and recorded in her diary: Divine Mercy in My Soul. We will pray the Chaplet and Litany of Divine Mercy. Mass in French - September 4th On the first Sunday, of each month, a Mass in the French language will be offered at 1:30pm The next Mass will be Sunday, September 4th. All are invited to attend. Wisdom of the Saints Pope Saint Gregory the Great said: The proof of love is in the works. Where love exists, it works great things. But when it ceases to act, it ceases to exist.

When the priest says: The Body of Christ, we immediately respond: Amen and then, if receiving in the hand, we place Our Lord immediately into our mouth. We do not turn and walk away with the Blessed Sacrament. We do not make the sign of the Cross with the Blessed Sacrament, in our hand, and we do not raise the Blessed Sacrament up in the air.
