It is a sad day since this will be Fr. Scott Winchel last weekend at St. Mary on the Hill. We give thanks to God for the love, wisdom, faith, talents and skills that he has generously shared with us these past two years. I have no doubt that the parishioners of St. Theresa Church in Cordele will be very happy with their new pastor. We wish Fr. Winchel many blessings in the years to come. His ministry has been a blessing and a gift to us. It is a happy day since a native son of our parish, Fr. Carl J. Gleason, a Salvatorian priest, will celebrate the 57 th anniversary of his ordination at a special 9:15 Mass this Sunday morning. Father s family invites all in the parish to join them for this happy occasion. Father Gleason has devoted over 50 years of his priesthood to serving as a missionary in East Africa, notably in the Salvatorian s Tanzanian missions. And I am always happy to welcome the summer months even with the heat that comes with them. I know many of you will be headed to the lake or the beach. Some will be traveling to new places. If you are traveling to an unfamiliar vacation spot, remember you can always check out the Mass times at the local parish online at www. masstimes.org it is an amazing site. Not only does it have times of the Masses for each day in a particular area, it also has maps and directions to each church. It is a great travel resource. And speaking of resources, please continue to be good stewards during these summer months. We still can use your talents at our VBS next week. For anyone who is Virtus trained, it is not too late to volunteer. Also the end of June is the end of our fiscal year and as you can see we are behind where we should be in our offertory. Please continue to place God first in all things this summer. Please continue to keep current with your pledge to the parish offertory. And I still love to receive vacation bulletins. Put a stick note on them with your name and any great practice that caught your attention during your visit. I love to get a sense of the good things other parishes are doing. Sister Josephine had a couple days of retreat down Tybee Island last week and brought back the bulletin from St. Michael s. I think Fr. Peyton did a very nice job in addressing one of usual summertime issues: Father, would you please have something from the PULPIT about the way people come dressed for Church? Well, my views haven t changed in 39 years of priesthood I learned them from childhood (and feel free to disagree!). 1. It is all about Family Spirituality what values are taught in the home; and this is usually done at a very early age behavior and activity and dress/attire for Church is all about parenting. 2. I am not in the family home as children are preparing for Church. It is the parental example and authority that should be visible and operating. 3. My son or daughter would be dressed for Church even at the beach or other vacation spots in a given way, designating WHO WE ARE GOING TO SPEND SOME TIME WITH. That was the way my parents taught me. 4. The domestic church the family home needs to reclaim the Lord s Day as a significant time of the week. Again, it is parental values! 5. Here are some favorite random thoughts of the people: It s a disgrace; it s immoral; it s convenience. Some say, It s style. It s the parents fault! It s the sign of the times! What s the issue? They are coming to Church! They have a dress code at St. Peter s in Rome guards enforce it! As your priest, my take on church attire is that it all boils down to a reverence for the Blessed Sacrament. Do you teach/believe in the Presence of God in the Blessed Sacrament? So for me as a priest, it s not a matter of Judgment or Choice or Personal Freedom it s a basic profession of Faith. Fr. Tom

From Amazon.com: In My Sisters the Saints, author Colleen Carroll Campbell blends her personal narrative of spiritual seeking, trials, stumbles, and breakthroughs with the stories of six women saints who profoundly changed her life: Teresa of Avila, Therese of Lisieux, Faustina of Poland, Edith Stein of Germany, Mother Teresa of Calcutta, and Mary of Nazareth. Drawing upon the rich writings and examples of these extraordinary women, the author reveals Christianity s liberating power for women and the relevance of the saints to the lives of contemporary Christians.
